Safety question for new builds - DW61 - 06-08-2012
May be a silly questions but..
Do any of you experienced shooters/builders have any sort of safety checklist you run before shooting your new build for the first time? Things to check, re-check?
What to look for after the first shot or two? (Brass deflection, case markings, etc)
Any preference on first ammo? I have both Nosler and Wolf
I'm getting close to putting my first shot down range and trying to avoid any surprizes

Brownells has a good video. But some things I have done. Cycle action several times. Test trigger, confirm safety works. Also, cycle action. Hold bolt 1/2-1/4 inch out of battery, confirm trigger does not function. This will protect you if you get a stove pipe and you bolt doesn't go into full battery. I also test with empty mag, confirm bolt lock back. I usually run rather wet to start. Not barrel, but carrier with a good gun oil. Make sure your gas tube looks centered. Have a good time.

Look at the military checklists (google M-16 safety checks). They have a list of safety checks you need to run through on a regular basis and after any time that you disassemble and reassemble the rifle. It's a short list. Pull the trigger, then use the charging handle to reset and apply the safety. Then try to fire with safety on .... etc. etc. etc. That and a good go-no go gauge will do just fine.
It also helps to make up some dummy rounds to use to cycle to check for proper function.

And I thought I was the only one that did that. Lol. One thing I do when I install the gas block and tube is block off the barrel and blow in the other end to make sure air comes throught the tube.

Here is how I test the gas system. I like to take a sized case and put a spent primer in it, pull the rear take down pin and open the action, chamber the case, then I take my compressed air and give it a shot of 30 psi down the muzzle. That gives enough air to cycle the bolt and eject the case but not enough to damage your charging handle.

When reassembling the bolt/carrier/firing pin...make sure the firing pin retaining pin is on the proper side of said firing pin. Made that mistake a couple times in boot camp and when we all went to present arms, the only sound was of a tiny clinking firing pin falling from the bolt carrier, and the hoarshest whisper I've ever heard a D.I. "whisper".
