Hi all,
Went with a cheap strap on brass catcher (Midway $15) for my Hunter 19.5" which doesn't have a sufficient opening, so spent brass eventually gets in the way.
Can anyone direct me to a more reliable model?

Looks a little like the one I bought.... your cases end up in the bottom of the bag without problems? Mine never have. Does the opening rectangle have any 'extensions' to help keep the bag open?

Mine did not open sufficiently when I first got it. What I found to work is to mount it and then squeeze the ends toward the center, which forces the middle area more open, kinda like a farmer's red coin holder. It'll hold itself open then. Mine is relatively new, so it may lose that stiffness once it bets a little older. I have read of folks putting a reloading bullet box inside the area just beyond the mouth to keep it formed. that works too. FWIW, I bought the cheap UTG one.

Ditto what Hoot says. I also found that after 5 cases get in there the weight will close off the top. The solutions I found to this was to open the zipper and let the brass fall into a small pile below you or you can turn the gun on its side with the ejection port face down "getto style".

I have several of the Midway catchers. There is a simple and cheap fix. Take a plastic milk jug or other plastic bottle and
cut a strip about 3 inches wide and long enough to go completely around the mouth of the bag. Fit it in place and I just stapled it in place. It has worked perfectly for two years.

I made mine from a Crown Royal bag and a wire coat hanger. Go ahead laugh, it works surprisingly well. I'd love to see something small and unobtrusive like what the skeet shooters have for there semi shotguns. It'd only have to hold 2 or three empties max for hunting.

You are welcome. Another thing you can do to help with the function is to work the velcro straps until they are more flexible. They then conform to the handguard easier and helps the catcher stay in place. Once it is broken in, it works well enough, especially considering the cost.

I did the same thing mentioned earlier about the milk jug plastic to keep the bag open. You have to watch that you don't get too many cases in the bag, or the weight will pull the bag out of position. I often just unzip the bottom of the bag, then the brass just falls beside the rifle.

This is the brass catcher to get, not the velcro versions. The second one down has a rail section that clamps on a 12 o'clock rail, and the wire from the bag inserts into two holes on the rail clamp/mount. Without failure, every Velcro brass catcher I've seen induces malfunctions as the recoil shifts the weight of the bag down each time you fire. They are a PITA. Unless you Jerry-rig some contraption to hold the Velcro on tightly, they suck big time, and most are made in China.

I've found that the opening isn't the issue most of the time. After 5 or 10 rounds get into the bag, it weighs down the bag and pinches the opening closed. I take a little plastic basket or tupperware bowl and place it under the brass catcher. As I shoot, the brass falls down through the net and catches in the basket/tupperware. It also help to grab each long wire along the top and bottom and pull. It'll stretch the opening out a little more and allow more room for the brass to fit through.

Another nice thing about it is that it can be modular. Since my first post, I've made a new mounting block that's thin enough to sit in the gap under the forward ring of a LaRue mount, giving it proper placement with the scope on.

What did you make the block out of, and can you make more? I was even thinking about doing that with the LaRue mount itself.
