So I Have A Savage 12 LRP - Harpoon1 - 07-13-2023

Have had it for 6-7 years?????? It was a shooter right out of the box, with factory Hornady American Gunner 140 BTHP. Consistently around a half inch gun. Well, I neglected Cleaning it after a humid summer session and when I finally got around to it, it was loaded with rust, stem to stern! So I went to town with a bronze brush and vinegar. Then baking soda, flush and then a normal cleaning. That was 5 years ago now. Rust was gone the barrel is covered with pitting. That was the first time but it’s happened several more time since then. However the gun keeps shooting, just like new, right out of the box! To be fair I have noticed a reduction in velocities but the small groups are still there!

You’ve always heard, be extremely careful with the crown, don’t let it get dinged up! I’ve got other guns with pitted, damaged crowns that are none the worse for wear either!

Here’s the muzzle after I cleaned it up, you can clearly see the pitting damage to the crown! 50% of the barrel looks like the muzzle picture. Looking at that picture, you wouldn’t think you couldn’t hit the water with it if you shot it out of a boat!

Haven't shot the gun in about a year, from a couple of days ago, gun has somewhere between 2-3k rounds through it.

Harpoon1- I have a model 12 LRP in 260 rem thats just like that- I was all ready to put a Bartlein or Kreiger barrel on it- but the factory barrel continues to shoot like your pics there. Crazy! hornady 140gr HPBT or 140 amax with H4350 shoot like that all day. I do have a de-humidifier
running in my basement to keep the rust possibilities down on my guns & reloading equipment.

We don't have a real good understanding of what makes one barrel shoot well and another not. We like to pontificate about it, but there's little hard data on it.

what's the relative humidity through out the year where you live? And the temps to go with it?? I expect to see that in WWII '03A3 barrels as they were still using potassium chlorate primers and the salts attracted water and pitted barrels. I've never heard of that or seen it before with modern primers/ammo, unless you were out hunting in the rain and didn't dry/clean/oil. but in that case it could get as rusty on the outside as the inside.

Live coastal SE Virginia. We have very high humidity for the relative temperature year round. 70-80% is not uncommon in the summer! This is what it looked like before removing the rust. Looked like I had been shooting Graham Crackers! Cool
