97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 06-24-2023 I'll be working up a load with the 97g Absolute Hammers. The powders I have on hand are A2520, CFE223, and Leverevolution (HLVR). I know that Hammers have no published load data but I have some experience loading them and finding starting points with similar bullets from published data. Ive also consulted the Hammer load data spreadsheet... I find very little on my bullet and powder selections except A2520 Ive managed to come up with a starting point. If anyone has any info on CFE or HLVR id be grateful? I do find some data on HLVR but those loading it favor the 123g bullets, is HLVR better suited for the heavier bullets and not so ideal for lighter bullets? 97g Absolute Hammer powders - VASCAR2 - 06-24-2023 Barnes has 100 grain TTSX data using H-335 and IMR8208XBR plus other powders which should give you a safe starting point. https://www.barnesbullets.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/6.5-Grendel.pdf Hornady 8th edition has CFE223 data for 100 grain soft point, start load 26.5 grains max load 30.3. Nosler has load data online for 100 grain Nosler Partition and 100 grain Ballistic Tip. Sierra has load data for their 100 grain varmint bullet which is a cup and core bullet but should give a safe starting pont. Sierra show good velocities with Power Pro Varmint but no data for CFE223 or LeveRevolution. Benchmark is a common powder recommended with 100 grain bullets and has decent temperature stability. I used CFE 223 with 85 grain Sierra Varmint and got good accuracy and velocity. Most of my 85 to 107 grain bullets have been loaded with Accurate 2230, Xterminator, IMR8208XBR, TAC and H-335. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 06-24-2023 VASCAR2 Wrote:Barnes has 100 grain TTSX data using H-335 and IMR8208XBR plus other powders which should give you a safe starting point. These are great leads, thank you. I knew about Noslers data, they also have my A2520 powder for a 90g so Im starting with A2520. I think CFE will perform similar to A2520 as it did in my 223. Im still curious about HLVR but I think I have to buy Sierras book to get those... 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 06-28-2023 for those interested, results of my first Grendel handloads. 6.5 Grendel, 20in bbl, 8 twist. The powders I have on hand are A2520, CFE223, and Leverevolution (HLVR). I have only used the absolute Hammer in the 6mm ARC. Expect you would do well to consider faster propellants. Absolute Hammer bullets have considerably less bearing area due to the drive band design. IMR 8208 was my choice for a hunting load in the 6mm ARC application. H335 was tested more recently & while top velocities were seen w H335 by a good margin, Ill still favor the IMR 8208 for the stability factor. Of your three powder choices Id say you are looking at a wash as they are very similar. I looked at the Hammer forms & in the reloading forum they have an Absolute hammer spread sheet for the Absolute hammer's. Two Grendel offerings is all that is offered. Each of the loads are with the 97gr AH. Reloader 10 X is the one that looks most promising to me in terms of velocity. If it were me Id consider Ramshot Tac & IMR 8208 & H335 as well. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - VASCAR2 - 06-29-2023 Shooters World AR-Plus powder is in the same burn rate area as Accurate 2230, H-335 and Reloader 10. Shooters World powder was at a local Scheels and was one of the cheapest rifle powders by pound. Western/Accurate/Ramshot used to be cheaper but since being bought out by Hodgdon the price is about like the other rifle powder prices. The availability of powder is still pretty limited in my area. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Former Cav - 06-29-2023 My wife is in the hospital from food poisoning at a restaurant we frequent. When she gets out I will be trying shooters world tacticle rifle and Lapua 108 Grain OTM Scenar bullets with BR#4 primers and new starline brass. Starting at 28 grains and doing the ladder thing. I will be using a LabRadar unit. (anyone want to buy an Oehler 35p chronograph in a rifle case.. Used, but mint and works great if you don't have a range where you have to shoot through a tube or they have a big a$$ed visor to keep morons from shooting over the berm !!) 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 06-29-2023 I'd really like to try some H335 but the store was out. I'll have to consider ordering online. In the mean time I think the best powder I have on hand is the A2520, will finish that load up. My guess is the HLVR is better for the heavier bullets.... 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Harpoon1 - 06-29-2023 Quote: In the mean time I think the best powder I have on hand is the A2520, will finish that load up. Agreed, LVR works great with heavy projectiles but, A2520 is one, if not the most, versatile, all around Grendel powders! At least thats what I heard Bill Alexander thought, to be fair, before the advent of LVR!

The cci 400 are thinner cupped primers, designed for bolt action rifle! And not recommended in semi-auto AR-15 style firearm because they increase the likelihood of slam fires! Did you run the new, unfired brass through a neck sizing mandrel before loading? Factory brass has wildly different neck tension! Without neck tension uniformity, respectfully, your observed data is suspect! For the record, I made that mistake for years! The Grendel is a great, versatile hunting choice, trying to save you from making the same mistakes I did! Lord knows, Ive made them all but still try not to make the same mistake more than 3 times in a row! At least, thats my current goal! ![]() Welcome to the forum!
97g Absolute Hammer powders - 603Country - 06-29-2023 I always used BR4s and CCI 41s, but was running low. Bought some CCI 400s and had several slam fires. Went to CCI450s after I used the 400s up in the bolt gun and no more AR slamfires. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 06-30-2023 Harpoon1 Wrote:How many rounds per charge weight interval? Just saying . only 1 round per charge. This wasnt a saterlee test but just a pressure test and initial rough zero (new rifle). This is a very common method with Hammer shooters starting new, the interesting thing about Hammers is they tend to group the same regardless of charge weight. Next I will probably go another grain higher unless I find pressure signs and the zero will be the same. Good call on the neck sizing, yes I did that before I loaded the cases. The only variation I should see now might be slightly less velocity from bumping the shoulder of the fireformed case headspace. Good tips on the primers, I'll investigate. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - WestMOhunter - 10-25-2023 Benchmark, H322 and Reloder 10x (I am in the AR-Comp (#1) and 8208 (#2) camp, but not for this bullet) 20 Wilson Arms 6.5 Grendel (AR15): Benchmark (pressure test)- 29.7-2715; 30.5-2775; 31.0 - 2850; 31.2: 2857, 2872, 2889 (pressure, back off) H322 (pressure test) - 29.5 - 2804; 30.0 - 2858; 30.3 - 2870 (pressure, half-circle; 30.6 - 2900 pressure, full circle); H322 @ 29.8 - 2825; 2801; 2822; 2816 (sub moa) Have not had a chance to test R10x, but reports are that it's as good or better than above. I'm not sold on the Absolute design over Hammer Hunter or HHT for speed. You can probably push them a little faster, but it seems the claimed benefits (300-400 fps over) are uncommon. Maybe an additional 100 fps at best, depending on weight and cartridge being loaded. This is what I found with .280AI as well. Ok bullet capable of ok accuracy in my rig, but think I'll try 99 Hammer Hunters to see if I can get back closer to 1/2" groups at 2750- 2,800 fps. NOTE! Loads above exceed max. charge weights and I am not recommending these recipes. Proceed with extreme caution. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - SDW - 10-29-2023 Harpoon1 Wrote:Did you run the new, unfired brass through a neck sizing mandrel before loading? I saw this as I was browsing. Probably a dumb question that I already know the answer to, but is there a chance that throwing a crimp on the rims would help with cases that have not been neck sized prior to loading? I'm thinking maybe by using a Lee FC die on them for a light crimp? I did a little googling a while ago on this subject. The opinions I saw make it sound pointless. Thought I'd see what you folks think anyway. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 10-31-2023 SDW Wrote:Older thread I know. I saw this as I was browsing.nope, wont make a difference. I have a box of 129gn absolute hammer and 125gn hammer HHT and 80gn HHT in .264 to try in my 6.5 grendel and 6.5 PRC. Also bought a box of 200gn Power Hammer to try out in my .35 whelen. I do have a sortment of powders AA2520, 2808XBR, H4831sc, cfe223, N560, N565, N568, varget, Retumbo and 4350. I think I will try cfe223 and AA2520 first with these bullet first and work up a good hunting load. My PSA upper groups the AA129gr SST's pretty dang good. I also bought a couple of boxes of Barnes 100 and 120gn TSX and TTSX to try. How do these bullets group for you, like better slow, mid range or upper loads? 97g Absolute Hammer powders - SDguy - 01-12-2024 Zinkin Wrote:Koda, are you still running these Hammers? The Absolute Hammers thrive in faster burn rates. The minimal land area facilitates velocity that are rather surprising to me, anyways. Something between Rimshot Tac & H335 would be where I'd expect to find top performance. Big down side to the Absolute Hammers is that you have little reference data to work with & the credibility of the data available is a question mark. Rather few are comfortable going out on a limb to develop there own load data. 97g Absolute Hammer powders - Koda - 01-12-2024 Zinkin Wrote:Koda, are you still running these Hammers? Im getting 1moa.... if I understand what you mean Im running these at the upper end of pressure I think, with A2520 I havent found pressure but I am at 100% case fill so Im stopping there. Since I last replied to this thread Ive tested H335 and HLVR with this 97gn Absolute Hammer (AH). On the H335 I hit major pressure trying to reach the same velocity I got with A2520. With HLVR I did not reach and pressure signs and like A2520 I reached case fill and got about the same velocity Im getting with A2520 so its a wash between those two. I haven't tried any other bullets yet, guns not even a year old yet. Im very curious how your 80gnHHT works out if your using it in an AR? There is some uncertainty if the neck tension will hold it with only one drive band depending on COAL to fit an AR mag and cycle. Here's a copy/paste of my pressure ladders for H335 and HLVR to add to the body of knowledge here: H335 and HLVR pressure ladder with 97gn Absolute Hammer, 2.250 coal. HLVR: (charge weight/ velocity) 29-2426 30-2554 31-2618 31.5-2679 32-2720 32.5-2773 32.8-2783 33-2806 (compressed) 33.2-2821 (compressed) No pressure signs on all H335: 28-2611 29-2698 30-2807 light swipe 31-2909 swipe and ejector mark 31.5-2946 heavy swipe and ejector mark, swipe had shaving burr come off. 31.8-2971 heavy swipe and ejector mark 32-2985 heavy swipe and ejector mark, did not eject from chamber. Stopped none of these held the bolt open, all but 32gn ejected.

You are correct there is little to no reference data on loading the Absolutes, and while reloaders should approach with caution I havent found it all that risky. Ive found with every bullet weight there is a range of starting weights in various powders that tend to average the same, I start there. Since the Absolutes will react as if they are just a little bit lighter bullet Im comfortable just starting at the average starting weight listed in most published load data for the same bullet weight. The caveat to that is I prefer if my powder is one of those listed of course. I tend to prefer Hodgdon or Nosler load data, plus Hammers user data for reference. So far between 2 Absolutes I've handloaded I've always started way too low and wasted those precious primers to find max (pressure then back off a grain). |
