Barrel extension denting shoulder junction - Dt219 - 06-04-2023
Is there any way to eliminate the barrel extension gouging/denting the heck out of the case body ? I dont notice it as bad dropping the bolt as when the rifle cycles. I have cleaned up the extension to where its not scratching my rounds going in or coming out but its definitely nailing the body shoulder junction. Its a 16 Wilson combat barrel that shoots pretty good. I have a standard buffer and gas block installed. I dont know if I used a heavier buffer or spring or cut the gas a litttle if it would help slow the carrier down Thanks.

Are you sure it's not the deflector, after ejecting, the case can hit that pretty hard. If it is, use a piece of velcro (the soft clingy side, not the hooks) or a 1/8" rubber square stuck onto the deflector.
You'll know that's where the impact is by seeing some brass smudge on that angled surface.
This has been the solution for me to that shoulder-thingy bang-up you see....
Could be something else in your case I guess.

That would be my guess too! Hitting the the brass deflector! Another solution is to trim a coil or two off the ejector spring until you get the desired results.

I wish it was those dents on the body and the case mouth that the deflector causes. I have had those and fixed them on all my ar rifles. These occur prior to firing.

Are you sure it is not the magazine feed lips causing the damage to the case??

I have bent them up and out to get the nose of the bullet pointed up more for a better presentation. It has helped it out as far as dropping the bolt on one in the magazine. I need to let the rifle cycle and pull one out of the chamber and see if it fixed it

Call or email Wilson Combat and tell them whats happening! They make quality stuff, see what they have to say!

That single dent looks like the sharp ridge between the two extension ramps. If you've filed the ramps that ridge can become sharper and start to dent the case. Magazines that firmly hold the round before it releases don't help. Playing with the magazine lips might work. Filing the ridge flatter might also help but might introduce new problems. Be careful, the risk with filing extension feed ramps is messing with it beyond where it helps.
It is definitely not the deflector - those are flatter dents.

Those are factory loaded Nosler varmageddons, This chamber is lot deeper throat than others I have had. They are probably scratches from that case being put in and pulled out several times. If I try and just take the edge off the center between the 2 bottom ramps that shouldnt hurt anything if I only go a little bit

I'd look at the magazine/s first. Easier to replace magazines than the whole barrel. If you file the barrel extension ridge too shallow it may mean that rounds now don't feed neatly into the chamber - just saying.
I imagine those case dings get pushed back out when it gets fired. At least most of the way. Obviously not good for case life though so there's an imperative to fix this.
Regardless, let us know what happens please.

Those magazines are c products defense. Yes the dents do get fired out. Although like you said cant be good for case life. What other mags are preferred in a grendel ?

Keep track of which side of the magazine the cartridge chambers from. It may be only one side of the magazine that could use a little smoothing..

Best mags? This topic comes up from time to time on the Forum and there does not seem to be a stand-out. To be fair I have only used ASC: 9, 16 and 24rd. The 9 and 24 have functioned flawlessly. The 16 (same size as 5.56 20rd) occasionally has the right-hand side round jam up into the extension. I had two but can't find the other one. Been playing with the lip but it may be the ejector.
Like Montana says, a lot can be fixed by servicing or changing mags.
