95gr or 110gr Maker TREX? - Stump Buster - 04-27-2023

For Deer, Hogs, Antelope, Coyotes, Bobcat, Javelina, Wolves, Auodad, Blackbuck within 300yds out of a 20"-22" bolt action (1:8 twist)?

I've read the lead free projectile thread and watched the CarpeAnalySus and Hunt TXHogs youtube videos. Looks like the 85grainers expand like crazy and hold together the best, but that may be because they don't have that heavier shank pushing past the petals during the expansion process. Both the 95gr and the 110gr TREX's seem to shed petals pretty consistently.

Now that these have been in the field for a while... Anyone have a preference of one weight over the other for any reason? Currently the 95Gr are $.82 each and the 110gr are $.80 each, so any cost saving is minimal between the two.

I’ve been considering these vs the hammers for some experimenting. Agreed that the 85gr TREXs seem to open up too much and limit penetration. Should be good for shock value.

I've only hunted with the 110g and every deer and hog I've shot through the vitals falls within 25 yards.

I also spoke to Paul today from Maker Bullets and he said these two bullets are so close in performance that I couldn't make a bad choice. He emphasized there's no need to push these bullets to max speed, just find the velocity your particular barrel likes best and they'll perform. He did say that even though he felt all three were excellent bullets, he had a slight personal preference for the 95 grainers in the Grendel as it was a good balance in weight and design for the cartridge.

Been throwing around the idea of trying the 110gr or 120gr trex. What is the minimum velocity for reliable expansion with these? And does maker provide load data or what has everyone been using for data?

Welcome Backwoods. You can certainly load the longer TREX bullets, but the lighter ones are more ideal in 6.5 Grendel.

Monoliths tend to be really long for caliber. 110gr is 1.25” long. What barrel length do you have?

There are several threads discussing the expansion thresholds, terminal performance, expected velocities with different powders and charge weights.

Thanks for the advice LRRPF52. I know monos are longer than traditional designs. I've got a howa mini with the 20" heavy bbl and I've recently acquired a cz varmint with the 25" heavy bbl that I havnt picked up yet. I've got a really good ffl that will put things in the back for me until I can get the funds together lol. I've been trying to find some decent bullets for these guns to load up but most projectiles that might be suitable are either out of stock or something that I don't care for like the sst or my howa won't shoot good like the hornady black 123gr eld-m. From the research I've done so far the speer 120gr gold dot is a great choice but good luck finding them.

I clipped my Howa mag when I had it, and was able to load longer COL for maybe 3 rounds in the mag.

Depending on what COLs you want to load, you can get away with a lot more in the bolt gun single-loading, or with a Lead Sled in the AR-15.
