What powders are people using for monster projetiles in the Grendel
Ive just brought a lyman 150gn bullet mould
Gas checked and powder coated im told is good to 2500 fps so I should be able to run them as fast as the Grendel will allow I geuss around 1900-2200fps?

I would imagine 3031 and 4227 would be two decent choices. I would also try some 4895. Will probably have to extrapolate using 6.5 Swedish.

Yes, I think you may get 1900 fps from them but not much more.

Forgot that it is a cast bullet. 150 grains ought to be about as long as a 120 jacketed. Ought to stabilize very well.

Outstanding! I have long advocated that people use heavy bullets when loading cast bullets. The heavier cast bullets reduce or eliminate the velocity penalty one gets when keeping cast lead within normal speed limits.

Very few Grendeliers work with the heavy bullets but Ammoguide.com has almost 700 (currently 698) loads for the Grendel. Among these are eight loads for the 156 gr Lapua and three for the 160 gr Hornady bullets.

Powders used were Hodgdon Varget and Vhitovuori N140, N150, N530, and N540.

Max velocities were 2123 fps for the 156 gr Lapua and 2090 for the 160 gr Hornady bullets.

If I recall correctly, the Lapua loads were developed by Alexander Arms in the early days of Grendel development.

I would be looking at H4895, CFE223, Leverevolution all work well with the 130 class bullets and I expect would with heavier bullets. H4895 is one of the most versatile powders available be it for full power loads or reduced loads in larger calibers.

I like to keep H4895 and Accurate 5744 around for their versatility light or heaver loads but I load for lots more than the Grendel.

Heavy Grendel powder - VASCAR2 - 04-06-2023

I have Alexander Arms reloading data saved and the heaviest bullet listed is the Lapua 144 grain FMJ. There is only one load listed 29.0 grains of Accurate 2520 with no velocity or pressure listed.

VihtVuori has load data free online.

https://www.vihtavuori.com/reloading-data-tool-rifle-handgun-cowboy-action-shooting/#/imperials/1/68/-1/-1/-1

VihtaVuori has data for the 144 grain Lapua FMJBT. The highest velocities were with N540 and N140. There is also data for the 156 grain Lapua Mega bullet.

144 grain Lapua FMJBT

N540 start 24.7, Max 27.8 vel. 2356 (24” barrel)
N140 start 23.0, Max 27.3 vel. 2310

156 Grain Lapua Mega

N540 start 21.3, Max 25.8 vel. 2123
N140 start 20.2, Max 25.0 vel. 2057

@LR1955
Yes it will be interesting if they stabilise in theory a twist rate of 1-8 should do the job
I have other 6.5 rifles aswell though I can put this to use in if they don’t work in the Grendel

As it's suppressed you could also try for a quiet subsonic load.

Something around 9 gns of Trail Boss and working backwards to 7gns. High subsonic will be in there somewhere with no risk of over-pressure. The case will overflow long before it gets even close to max pressure - will only be about 35,000psi. It's not a gas gun so no need to be juggling velocity with reliable cycling. Having too little powder will be the issue. 7gns will be about 80% full and you don't want to go less than that.

KS:

My mistake! A 150 cast bullet ought to be short enough to stabilize quite well.

If I were dealing with this and a bolt rifle like you have, I would seat the cast bullet to where it just touches the lands and then figure out how much cartridge space I had left. Then fill it with 4895 but not too much to compress the charge.

I do have a feeling you will probably end up with 3031 or 4227 though.

Speer had load data for it's 140 hot core bullet that may be of use.

Thanks everyone
Looking forward to trying them out
Sadly there is no 6.5cal gas checks in stock anywhere in New Zealand
So I might have to import some from ether Australia or the USA
Could be awhile before i can use any

KS:

I do not think you absolutely must have a gas check when shooting powder coated bullets. In fact, I tend to think you don't need them at all unless the bullet lacks bearing surface and you need that extra 1/8 (?) inch of a gas check.

Looking at your bullet mold, I see a lot of bearing surface.

I would cast some up, powder coat them, size and shoot them.

My experience with gas checks has been mixed. Unless the base of the bullet is the right size, they either won't fit or won't crimp and thus fall off when fired. Before powder coating they were a necessary evil if a guy wanted to get over about 1200 fps with a cast bullet.

Today, Powder Coating has rendered lube obsolete. Probably gas checks too.

Note LR’s mention of 1200 fps with no gas checks.

That means you can get started with some light loads with appropriate powsers.

Got some ready to go
Just need the gas checks which a kind stranger has lent me some on a replacement basis
Just waiting for them to arrive in the mail

Yes I know you can shoot them without gas checks
But you would need to slow them down and do be honest I wannabe over 2k as I plan to try them out on bambi’s mum or dad i have plenty of big slow moving cannons
45-70 45-90 50-70 577-450 just to name a couple
So no real reason to shoot Grendel slow aswell

Heavy Grendel powder - kmon - 04-08-2023

Good looking bullets. Glad you got some gas checks to go ahead and get started with it. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Big and slow works great for hunting just trajectory and drift makes it a little more difficult at longer ranges but momentum is a real thing for penetration. I have harvested bucks and does with the likes of 44 Special and 44 Mag, 357 mag and max, 38-55 and 45-70 using cast bullets as well as 45 and 50cal muzzle loaders.

I am mainly a black powder shooter
Grendel and creedmoor are my only two “modern” rifles
The last couple of years i have been 100% focused on long range bpcr
Here’s my latest long range build Remington rolling block

Fine looking rifle!

Average hunters could do more with that class of rifle than most can do with modern equipment.

Why?

Today’s average shooter shoots three sighters a the range each year, then, if lucky, 1 or two at game every year or so.

Result — not nearly enogh practice.

Heavy Grendel powder - Constitutionalist - 04-11-2023

FWIW I shoot 126gr NOE cast powder coated w/gas checks. I get 2300fps with 26.0gr of IMR3031. Velocity limits are higher with PC.

Never tried going heavier, though. I thought about the 170gr cruise missile for my M96. That bullet would use up too much case capacity in Grendel. Something middle of the road might work in both. Now you've got me thinking....

having a play with GRT on the advice of a member of the local nz forum of which i am also a member ive never used GRT before want an awesome program.
surprisingly its actually got the lyman #2660673 bullet on file.

looks like it will hit pressure around 28.5-29.0gn at around 2300-2350fps with lever revolution
