Budget Build Hunting Grendel - maconmatt - 11-29-2022
Hey everyone! I'm new to these forums as well as the Grendel caliber. Here's what I'm hoping will be my "workhorse" deer rifle.
I had previously built this AR in .223 (above), but I recently added an 18" 6.5 Grendel PSA upper. There's nothing outright "special" about it...but, to me, that's the point: understated and simple.

Put together a 20" BCA barreled Anderson lower unit a couple of years ago that has been good for prairie dogs to 550 yards and has a couple of antelope already. Hornady black ammo shoots inside 1.5" and ARCOMP/120ELD will stay inside an inch.
Used to have 5 223 ARs, now its down to just one 223. One 300b

Man, has that been a challenge! I ordered a box of Nosler 120g BT ammo that Im hoping will get the job done, for now. Any good tips on finding ammo?

Currently reloading your own 6.5 Grendel ammo is the surest solution. If you have any friends that reload maybe they will help you reload. Starline has been releasing brass every couple months if you watch for their back order. Placing a back order usually comes in stock and ships pretty quick. Druid Hill Armory has been selling Starline brass and 6.5 Grendel ammunition and have recently had both in stock. Powder and primers are starting to show back up even though at higher prices. If you watch Midsouth Shooters Supply and Grafs & Son you can usually find 6.5 mm bullets and occasionally ammo. Reloading dies and accessories are there to load the 6.5 Grendel. Im using a single stage RCBS Rock Chucker I bought in the early 80s.
Once a production run of 6.5 Grendel ammo hits the retailers you have to buy fast as it sells out rapidly. With the unrest in Europe and the current supply issues I dont see a huge change in 6.5 Grendel ammo availability for the next 12-24 months. Currently demand for 6.5 Grendel ammo is more than is being manufactured.

Druid Hill has fifty round boxes of Grendel and several other calibers as well.
SST and other Hornady and Nosler projectiles plus some copper for restricted states like my home state of California.
