Hornady CX 120 gr. on Hogs & a Coyote - Double Naught Spy - 08-29-2022

Dinny managed to get ahold of some CX 120s that DHA loaded into ammo for me. With that said, I know virtually nothing about CX bullets other than that they are all copper and are supposed to be a GMX successor. So, I came into this test about as untainted as possible.

The new bullets seem to work well. As near as I can tell, they are opening up just fine and appear to be making nice holes through the animals and doing a goodly amount of damage. I have yet to recover one, however.

Great video Brian Looks like that bullet does do the job , thanks for sharing .

Hornady CX 120 gr. on Hogs & a Coyote - HuntTXhogs - 08-29-2022

I was present for the hunt and subsequent bullet recovery and in field analysis

I’ve had the privilege of joining Brian over the years and we’ve viewed and seen many hogs killed with a wide range of bullets.

My comment at the end of the night after the initial CX observations was

“The Grendel is doing 308 level damage to these pigs”

Granted it’s a small sample thus far but I haven’t been this intrigued by a 120 class grendel projectile in quite some time.

Thanks again for the invite !

I think your going to need a length wise shot on large hog to recover the 120 grain CX bullet.

A 450 lb boar would be nice, but since I have never seen one of those, a lengthwise shot is probably right on a smaller hog. Wink

I am now seeing that 2000 fps may be the cutoff for it to open properly. Maybe we will be able to test that with some more distant shots, but if that is the case, we may be back to more TUI performance and difficulty in recovery as well.

Nah! Just line up several of the smaller ones. How many would it take ..... 3, 4?
You might want to contact Hornady to learn about minimum opening velocity. When I made a comment on one of their podcasts, they said that some of the bullets are designed to open at lower velocities, but I would need to email them for more info. I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Great video very entertaining. I am new so might have already been discussed. What happened to 123sst? I haven't been able to find them anywhere. Has hornady dcd them? I am loading 95 vmax and 123eldm but haven't tried them on game yet. Has anyone tried these bullets on whitetail deer yet?

Hornady releases products in batches and with ammunition in 6.5 Grendel or lighter 6.5/.264 bullets the shelves are bare for a significant time. There is more demand than supply with the 6.5 Grendel and manufacturers have so many cartridges they haven’t tried to meet the demand for 6.5 Grendel.

Once 6.5 Grendel products hit the retailers you better act fast or everything will be sold out or outrageously priced.

To my knowledge 123 grain SST 6.5/.264 bullets and ammo are still current products. For performance on game with the 123 grain SST here is a link to the google custom search feature for this forum. It is very useful for finding threads on the various 6.5 Grendel topics.

I believe Hornady claims 1800FPS min velocity for expansion on the CX. Glad to hear they put the hurt on game because I just picked some up to fool with.

An ironic disadvantage of the 6.5mm becoming more popular is that many of the bullets are now being optimized for higher velocity cartridges. It will be interesting to see Hornady's strategy with the SST and CX.

It appears they tried to extend the useful speed range of the ELD-X bullets, though. In a recent podcast, the Hornady reps claimed that most ELD-X bullets open about 200 fps lower than SST's. The ELD-M's are optimized for accuracy and use a constant-thickness jacket, but there are numerous reports of it being an effective hunting bullet, especially at Grendel velocities. I emailed Hornady a question about the ELD-M's use in hunting, but they never responded. I asked if there was any skiving or other feature on the jacket that would assist uniform petaling of the jacket.

A couple years ago I ran some ELDM through a jug test, I wrote about here someplace. It did have the innerlock ring and it did give a maximum expansion mushroom losing the cores.

I like the way you think, but there is a slight flaw in your scheme. Lining up the hogs isn't so much of an issue as much as getting them to hold still while they are lined up is.

I found/read somewhere (random guy on a forum or YouTube) that 2000 fps was the opening threshold. It likely NOT an industry source, so I don't know. If you find correct info from a valid source, I would like to see what they say about lowest opening velocity. I haven't gotten around to sleuthing it, either.

I have the Hornady app, which gives velocity ranges for each bullet they sell. CX is listed the same as GMX, 1800-3600 FPS.

On this podcast, they say 2000 FPS.

I asked about CX bullets with lower opening velocity or if they all required 2000fps Hornady responded:

"Hornady Manufacturing

Great question, and no that is not always the case. Some of the more specialized monolithics have different minimum expansion velocities. Give us a call at 800-338-3220 and press 3, or shoot us an email at tech@hornady.com for the specialized questions."

Hornady CX 120 gr. on Hogs & a Coyote - Double Naught Spy - 09-03-2022

Thanks, guys. 2000 fps is sounds about right, then. That is a bit of a shame given, that other brands are able to make copper bullets that expand at lower velocities.

Got another hog on Thursday. This was a weird hunt. I expected the hog to go down with the first shot because I expected it to be a solid CNS shot. Here's the thing, while folks speak of shot placement, it is only 1/3 of that ballistic equation. You much also have penetration and trajectory to consider. Well, the hog was on the move when I took my shot and the shot was a little off, but the point of impact still looked fine in the middle of the neck, if only the bullet failed to penetrate. This is weird. The shot was a grazing shot, twice! By that I mean it broke the skin, went into the subcutaneous muscle, and popped back out, traveled <2" and entered the skin again for a repeat, popping out again and lost to parts unknown, 1/2" total depth of penetration.

Shot #2 was a stop shot to try to bring the hog down. I hate having wounded hogs run off and the quicker the hog went down, the quicker I could get it finished off. I figured I had limited opportunities as the hog was in a holding area with cattle. Penetration was good, but as the hog was on the run, placement was too far back, but the trajectory, quartered through the lower body, promised to do a bunch of damage, and undoubtedly did, but definitely not immediately fatal or a stop shot as the hog continued. The bullet exited after 13".

Shot number #3 was well placed with the hog almost stationary, through the shoulders. Only, this bullet that had overpenetrated so well on the previous hunt, penetrated only 9" without hitting any heavy bone. The hog made it a few steps before collapsing.

However, I did recover bullet #3. The CX bullets are NOT expanding as much as the previous wound channel analysis might have indicated. Looking at Hornady's info, this isn't a surprise. Hornady says there should be 95% weight retention, but I got <90%, which isn't bad, but still double the loss Hornady was noting.

Examining the bullet revealed that it was NOT fully expanded. Based on this singular example, it would indicate that maybe Grendel velocity isn't getting the full potential from them. Hopefully, I can recover more bullets and see if this is a pattern or a fluke.
