I was testing some TNT's this weekend. Was looking at the grouping and noticed the webbing outside the holes. That brown staining

IS the target plastered up against steel, or a board?
Looks sort of like splatter. But I haven't seen this on any tnt's that I've shot.
My targets are stapled to cardboard...

The targets are stapled to cardboard. About a foot or so off the ground. No weeds or grass in the way. I did not see this on any other powder loads.
Going to try again this weekend and see if it happens again. Also, plan to back off 0.2 grain increments down to 28 grain. Have a nice velocity drop here that the barrel seems to like.

It also looks a bit like tattooing, as in from powder, as from being shot from very close range.
No, the jacket isn't coming apart. You would have penetrating holes and not what looks like burned powder smears. Also, the bullets would not be so stable if the jackets were coming apart.

I have not seen that. Not really sure what it is, if at 100 yards - but as others say, if the jackets were coming apart, you wouldn't be getting groups like that. Looks like a build-up of soot on the bullet exterior. I would not expect AA2200 to do that, but maybe something is sooted up in the barrel, getting on the bullets, and coming off on impact - is what it looks like. How do you clean your BBL? Or, it could just be some form of backsplatter from your cardboard backstop. Though if it's normal clean cardboard, I wouldn't expect that either. Kind of interesting, curious to see what you evential diagnose. I the meantime, load looks good enough for most jobs!

Bugs can they can make a nice splatter on the target. Flys are more of a challenge but large grasshoppers make a lot bigger splatter.

Looks like dirt or a bug. The splatter is below the holes so maybe you edged one as it flew close to the target.
Here's what shooting a March fly looks like. It landed on the target so too good to refuse. 223 out of an F-Class gun shooting prone from a rest. March flies are big, about the same size as a bee.

I think all you bug killers are correct. We have May flies here, not saying it was one of those. I just never seen that. Was worried I was pushing too much Powder.

I shot flies on Thursday that is swell fun. I know its baiting and just a little bit unethical but smear a small amount of jam on your target used .222 at 100 yards.
