Will a standard mag work with the 6.5 Grendel round? I am in NY and limited to 10 rnd post ban mags. I have 1 and it holds 11 rounds so not sure I would even use it. I have a bunch of preban 20/30 rnd mags and was wondering how these will work with the 6.5 round.

You can get a couple of rounds into standard 5.56 mags, but anymore than about 7 rounds and they start to buldge the mag and dive and become generally unreliable. It would be best to find a regular ten round 6.5 mag. You could also look into the smaller capacity 6.8 magazines if you find something that fits your needs.

Thanks for the info. i will be shooting off a bench so loading 5 rnds in a 20 preban will work until i can get some new 5/10 rnd 6.5 mags.

I heard that you could use a Magpul 20 (5.56) round mag for Grendels, I have been trying it out in cycling the action and watching the rounds eject. I am very new to Shooting a Grendel, but this Saturday I will be trying it out. I'll let you know. I hope it does, as I like the magpul magazine releasing better than metal mags

Thanks for the link. I can only use 10 rnd or less post ban mags. I have a bunch of preban 20 rnd mags I'll try and see how they work before adding more 10 rnd post ban mags.

The issue that you'll find with any mags designed for 5.56 is that the vertical ribs on the sides of the mags are designed to handle the narrower diameter of the 5.56 round. Consequently, when you try to stuff the larger diameter Grendel round in a 5.56 mag, the Grendel rounds can't stack properly and begin to buldge the mag like ttrmike wrote. The 10-round ASC mags have a much shallower rib that allow the Grendel rounds to stack properly, so those are your best bet.

I have 1 ASC 10 rnd mag, it holds 11. Not sure I want to use that mag with the 10 rnd postban limit.

I've seen reported here that the 6.8SPC mags work well with the Grendel. I haven't tried it yet but it might be a consideration, FYI.
