6.5 Grendel .292 reamer...WTB - Longbow - 12-23-2021
Well my Howa mini 6.5 Grendel shoots 3/8" 5 shot groups.Cant be happier. but still would like to build a min spec .292 neck ( A .291 even better!) and fine tune my Lapua brass. 30 years bench rest shooting ,cant help it! A loaded round thru the Mini is 290,A fired case is .297 thats ALOT of expansion on the neck! What saves brass is a tight neck with little expansion. Your brass will last a LONG time as long as you dont hot rod them. thankyou,Pete

DISREGARD! Am leaving the Grendel alone and going A 6 ARC switch barrel instead!

The 6.5 Grendel SAAMI spec chamber was designed for the AR-15 with .300 neck with compound throat IIRC. I know Lothar-Walther used a tighter neck in their 6.5 CSS (which still shoots 6.5 Grendel ammo). Im not sure if Howa uses a tapered throat or the compound throat of the SAAMI spec chamber.
I can see why youd want a tighter neck in a bolt gun but I have no idea how many more reloads you can get using a .290 neck compared to .300 neck with quality reloading dies. The primer pockets usually give out on 6.5 Grendel brass before the necks loose tension or crack.
Itd be an interesting experiment to test how long brass could be reloaded from the tighter neck bolt action barrel compared to SAAMI spec barrel.

Having shot Benchrest for 30 years. If you shoot brass in a min spec chamber with tight neck.You will not get any brass flow.There is no where for it to go. So your primer pockets will not loosen. Have shot Hunter Class for Score Matches and used 25 cases for the whole year,you reload between relays and rotate thru the brass and keep in order. With A Grendel case opening up to .297 after firing in A howa mini then resize neck down to 288-9 ,you can see your flexing the brass in sizing AND slowly it will flow forward,then primer pockets will loosen after so many shots....

Have decided to go for A 6 Arc down the way, for my other barrel. Dont shoot the 6.5 Grendel to warrant buying a barrel,reamer,etc.Thankyou

My Howa 1500 blows necks out from 291 to 300. Unfortunately 300 is the CIP and SAAMI spec for the chamber neck diameter. I would need to buy a custom reamer to make a bolt rifle worthy Grendel chamber. Not sure it's worth it.

As VASCAR noted, Competition Shooting Sports (CSS) which was run by Arne Brennan, the co-developer of the Grendel sold a variation with a tighter neck. Arne shot in competition and preferred the smaller neck for longer brass life. That was over 10 years ago, though. At the time there was some bru-ha-ha over whether it should use the Grendel name and was, for a while may have been called the 6.5CSS. I think that Arne eventually started using the name "6.5mm PPCX". The "X", as I seem to recall stood for Grendel-style brass, which has the shoulder pushed forward when compared to regular PPC brass (eXtended capacity, in other words). It is possible that someone has a similar reamer to rent. There was also a 6mm PPCX, if that is of any interest. Gunsmiths who do a lot with Benchrest rifles may have one of those reamers, FWIW.
