The Grendel and its variations - jwilson1985 - 03-15-2012 6.5 Grendel .300 neck diameter with compound angle throat - 6.5 CSS .295 neck diameter with compound angle throat - .264 LBC-AR .295 neck diameter with 1 degree throat - 6.5 PPCX .292 neck diameter with 1 degree throat - "6.5 BPC" Special Purpose Bench Rest Bolt Action Chamber - thought i would post this for a lot of the new guys, and i haven't seen it on here The Grendel and its variations - txgunner00 - 03-15-2012 Is this only for 6.5 variants? The Grendel and its variations - Drifter - 03-15-2012 6.5 SAOD is another variant. Supposedly a .295" neck similar to the .264 LBC but with more taper, and a double angle throat with less free bore. http://www.65grendel.com/forum/showthread.php?825-Saod The Grendel and its variations - Schwag173 - 03-15-2012 I ordered my barrel from Lothar-Walther right after the Grendel went 'SAAMI.' Woody told me they were "6.5 CSS" but gave me the option of either .295 or .300 for the neck diameter. Since I opted for the .300 neck I think I'm Grendel in everything but the name. The Grendel and its variations - Opus Dei - 03-15-2012 Is "6.5 Sporter" a generic name for one of the above, or its' own dimensions? The Grendel and its variations - Drifter - 03-15-2012 6.5 Gren Match is listed on Pac-Nor's wildcat page. Don't know any details about it. http://www.pac-nor.com/wildcat/ The Grendel and its variations - Whelenon - 03-15-2012 Just from this thread that's 7 Grendel variants, no wonder the confusion. All these since the introduction of the Grendel 10 years ago. Hopefully, now with the SAAMI standardization, the makers of these variants will move the the Grendel specs. These variants should fade away and we should encourage barrel makers to use the SAAMI specs. It's like buying American, the Hordes and is circle of influence should buy Grendel. The Grendel and its variations - jwilson1985 - 03-15-2012 yes its confusing, and i agree they should just make the grendel. i dont understand why they made all of these outside the fact they all wanted a ride on the new money train but didnt want to pay the dues. Some probably had legitimate reasons, but this is most likely the truth for most. The Grendel and its variations - ttrmike - 03-16-2012 Doesn't the LBC have a 1.5 degree throat angle, not a 1 degree? Also there is the 6.5 Sporter which I have never seen specs for, but I do know that it uses a 7.62x39 bolt. The Grendel and its variations - John1701 - 03-18-2012 Don't blame the manufacuturers, Grendel had a pretty long growth pattern. You have to remember, the first few guns had a straight throat. Thats what the original was when it was the .26 Grendel. It was a long growth pattern and the manufacturers were correct at the time of production. The double angle throat was not until Gen 2 1/2 or 3. Then it was plus or minus for one reason or another. Why do you think the original Hornady ammo did not fit the production rifles at the time. It was all growth and rush to get things on the market. Now with SAAMI. Its all one platform. And it shoots pretty dang good. The Grendel and its variations - leopard6.5 - 03-18-2012 John: I hate to disagree but the first batch of Hornady 6.5 Grendel ammo shot just fine in my AA rifle and the only complaints I heard at the time was from people who had chambers that weren't the 6.5 Grendel chamber but one of the varients. My original AA Grendel rifle went back to 2006-2007 and and shot great as does my new ones. Hopefully with the SAAMI specs. being approved more of the manufacturers that make the varients will go back to the SAAMI spec. chamber and everything will be more consistant. By the way welcome to the forum. Lee The Grendel and its variations - adamjp - 03-18-2012 The 6.5 BPC (Brindell Palisimo Cartridge) was optimised for the Grendel case in a bolt action, not a semi-auto. I understand that the shoulder angle is a tiny bit different, and the throat is a little different. The Grendel and its variations - Variable - 03-18-2012 Welcome John! Interesting first post. Care to introduce yourself? http://www.65grendel.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?15-New-Member-Welcome
The Grendel and its variations - Mutt - 03-20-2012 The "MAIN" legitimate reason is ........ MONEY. They can call thier version the "Improved Custom Model" and charge more for it. Where it works better or not. The whole thing p@#$$ me off because you end up with all this other crap floating around in the market. And, everybody just ends up calling them a Grendel. That's why I tell people to buy a Grendel that actaully has the name stamped on the barrel. Chances are those are made to the Grendel chamber or they would be stamped with some other nonesense. The Grendel and its variations - Roguer - 03-20-2012 Well at least one of them was finally SAAMIed! The 6.5 Grendel will win in the long run now it has the Official SAAMI certification, other barrel, rifle makers now can put it their rifles and other platforms with their lawyers permission. That I think will help the 6.5 Grendel grow also. The Grendel and its variations - terry80452 - 04-01-2012 Opus Dei Wrote:Is "6.5 Sporter" a generic name for one of the above, or its' own dimensions?6.5 Sporter is sold by Model 1 sales. It uses a 7.62X39 bolt, with the chamber cut a bit deeper to compensate. the main difference between the two bolts is that the true Grendel bolt face is .011" deeper (.135") than the 7.62 bolt face (.124") I have a 6.5 Sporter, and the depth on the bolt face is, indeed, .124". In other words, it's designed to shoot the grendel cartridge, but goes about it in a slightly different way. Probably in an effort to avoid trademark issues..... In other words, with this rifle, if I need a new bolt (or want to upgrade) I get a 7.62 bolt, a true Grendel bolt would not headspace correctly. The Grendel and its variations - Opus Dei - 04-01-2012 Thanks, and Welcome. I knew it had a 7.62X39 bolt head, but didn't know if minimal alterations in case were part of it. KB also uses the 6.5 Sporter name. The Grendel and its variations - Whelenon - 04-01-2012 terry80452 Wrote:6.5 Sporter is sold by Model 1 sales. There is a potential danger here, I personally haven't measured my Grendel bolt but if Terry is correct and I believe he is because of other posts concerning the bolt face dimensions, if and when someone replaces his 7.62x39 bolt with a Grendel bolt that's .011 of excess headspace. Bad things can happen. Be careful and be sure you know what you have when it comes to replacing bolts. The Grendel and its variations - LRRPF52 - 04-01-2012 I had this happen to me. I received a bolt, thinking it was Grendel, but it is in fact a .124" deep bolt face. I measured against my AA bolt, which is .135". I know not to use it as a replacement in my Grendel chambered AA barrel now. |
