Weird Scratches In New Barrel - Harpoon1 - 06-16-2021

No one around here has a clue what caused them. Brand new Tikka from the factory, never been shot other than test firing at the factory. I pushed a few patches through there with Kroil first, then a couple of dry patches, just like I have a 100 times before, and was rewarded with this! Then used a little JB Bore Paste for 20-30 strokes to try and clean it up some, nothing. The scratches run the entire length of the barrel. Going to shoot it tomorrow for the first time. We’ll see if it has any effect on accuracy.

Any ideas what could have caused these scratches?

As the scratches look to me to be spiral, I would guess a projectile did it.

Could be........just thinking out loud here. If it was a projectile, wouldn’t it follow/match the rifling? Once the bullet engages the lands, it’s like a locomotive on the tracks, until it clears the muzzle. This has a “cross hatch” pattern/appearance and jumps over the rifling. But........IDK?

It’s the “cross hatch” pattern that stumps me. Something was pulled/pushed through the barrel one way, then back the other, with the barrel spinning in the opposite direction, giving you those “X” pattern scratches.

One of the downsides of owning a Tikka, is they’re made abroad and having to deal with an importer. In this case it’s Beretta USA, another conglomerate that is seemingly more interested in selling clothes and apparel than firearms. IMO! Anyway, they said shoot it and see what happens. It tend to agree, I can always send it back if it won’t group.

SAKO/Tikka doesn't always get it right. I had a TRG with a ridge in the chamber that would mark brass on the web, looked like head separation. I have never seen marks down the bore like you have. SAKO/Tikka does have a facility in Maryland aligned with Beretta; the US distributor.

Go shoot the gun, until then you dont know what it will do.

This is the reason why I dont own a bore scope anymore and why I will never own one again.

See here is the problem with owning a bore scope, even if the barrel is a shooter, you will always have that small sliver of doubt because you know that scratch is there. Had you not looked in there and just went shoot it and it shoot great you would never know the diffrence.

Appreciate it. I’ve already jumped through the hoops with them before posting. I’m making an educated guess that that scratches aren’t significant enough to have an enormous affect on the kind of accuracy I’m hoping for. Sub MOA is acceptable, .5 MOA is what I’m hoping I can coax out of it with taylored handloads. Either way, they say they’ll honor the warranty. I’ll find out tomorrow. Rolleyes

More curious what caused it, than finding a remedy after the fact! Cool

Harpoon,

Tikka and Sako advertise they lap their barrels prior to leaving the factory and I would say given the symmetrical spiraling that's what you are looking at. That spiral, not following the rifling suggests a machine has been in there after the barrel was rifled.

Tikka has an accuracy guarantee of 1MOA, 3rds @ 100M., and 5-shot 1MOA with heavy barrels. I have a heavy barrel .223 Tikka T3 and it shot better than that out of the box and still does (0.5+ MOA, handloads). I don't know if they honor the guarantee in the States but I am sure if it doesn't shoot given the photos you will have redress.

Weird Scratches In New Barrel - Mesa1978 - 06-16-2021

If you are capable and work up handloads, .5 MOA should be within reach. SAKO/Tikka barrels are usually very capable.

A5B, if the OP didn't have a bore scope, we would not have this interesting topic for the forum. Many uses including verifying port alignment with gas block, chamber condition, where in the barrel copper fouling happens (if it does at all), throat erosion amount, brass interior condition just to name a few.

+100 !

It’s some of the best money I ever spent! They’re going to have to pry mine out of my cold dead hands! Cool

I have seen similar marks but never as many and not as bad. I suppose a poorly aligned machine (or tool in poor condition) used to lap may make sense ... probably why you would pay more for a hand lapped barrel!

Weird Scratches In New Barrel - 37L1 - 06-17-2021

Nothing wrong with it. My Tikkas have the same markings and they shoot.

Shoot the damn rifle!

Your right we wouldnt. But we would most likely be having a thread about how much he loves his new rifle and wishes they made one in grendel.

To many people go looking for problems before useing a product to find out if they have a problem in the first place.

Weird Scratches In New Barrel - kmon - 06-17-2021

I agree with A5 on this one. New rifle I will clean then go shoot it, if up to par I am not really worried about it. If I were looking for why one does not shoot well or saw something on the brass then take it to a friend that has all the gadgets (that he rarely ever uses)

Actually too many times it’s the same people over and over again hijacking threads because they simply cannot read. The question of the OP was, “any idea what could have caused these scratches”? Not whether anyone should or shouldn’t shoot the rifle first, send it back first or even throw away and start over! No one asked for advice on what to do or how to proceed! Then those same people, spend the rest of the thread trying to justify what they’ve made up in their head by trying answer questions nobody asked.

So, you don’t want to actually buy one, just use your friends if there is a perceived problem. Rolleyes I.e. use somebody else's! Got it! Around here we call that being “cheap”! That may work a couple of times, then everybody figures it out, then you’re ignored. Nobody likes a titewad! Cool

You do know they’re only about $50 now? Wink

Same guy has had a press, calipers and scale as well as a couple sets of dies that were mine. I gave him those when he wanted to start reloading. Yes I borrow it but he doesn't mind. I have used his bore scope 1 time in about 10 years. So I really do not have much need for one.

Fair enough but the OP question was basically, “what do you think caused these scratches”, not whether you should own or use a borescope! Right?

You don’t think they’re necessary, that’s wonderful, I get it. No problem, start your own thread and quit trying to hijack mine.

Harpoon1, you've spent a lot of words chastising posters in your thread.

I have only one question for you:

How did your rifle shoot?

As far as the marks go, I'll bet they were done by a hone when they were finishing the barrel.
