Alexander Arms vs. Precision Fire Arms - Landon7 - 03-03-2012

I am going to pull the trigger on a 6.5 Grendel in a few days but can not decide between the two companies. They both have great reputations thats why I would like some input.

the upper that i am looking at from Precision Fire Arms is a Neptune 3 with 20" Les Bear heavy barrel, bolt, chrome bolt carrier, 12'' yankee hill rail, billet receiver. I will have the matching billet lower.

my goal was to have a sub moa accurate weapon and be able to hit 1000 yards but it looks like i will only be able to hit 800 on a good day with 20'' i dont want a 24'' so i adjusted.

if you had the choice between a Precision Fire arms rifle and Alexander Arms 20'' which would you choose and why? I know it just comes down to preference but i was wondering if there was any advantage from one or the other?

Landon7: I'll jump in and give you my opinion.

I have never owned a Precision Firearms upper or rifle so I don't have an opinion about their quality.

I assume you know the difference between the Grendel chamber and the LBC chamber but if not the SAAMI spec. chamber has a .300 neck and the LBC chamber has a .295 neck.
While this isn't much of a difference it is a difference.
When Hornady first came out with their Grendel ammo there were a lot of complaints from people with the .295 neck about them having problems with the Hornady Grendel ammo.
Since Hornady came out with their second run and subsequent runs these problems seem to have disappeared.
Hopefully it stays that way.

However, with Wolf coming out with low priced ammo sometime this year( hopefully) and this ammo being laquer coated from what I've read, I wonder if people with the tighter neck chambers are going to have problems all over again.
The Wolf ammo is being tested with the SAAMI spec. Grendel chamber and not the other chambers so until it comes out and someone tries it, we won't know what problems will come up.
For me anyways, I would rather have the SAAMI spec. chamber than take a chance on something else.

I've owned several AA Grendel rifles and uppers and have always been impressed with their quality and the willingness of Bill A. to be a stickler about quality and customer satisfaction.

I've also owned Les Baer rifles and uppers in the Grendel chamber so I'm not just an blind AA supporter.

Hopefully someone will post who has had personal knowledge of Precision Firearms so you can find out about their quality but even assuming they have great quality, I would still
personally go with AA for myself.

Good luck whichever you choose.

Lee

I can agree with this.
Cannot comment on Precision Firearms, as I have never personally used their stuff (guess I should fix that some time).

I have an upper on order with P.F. He will make barrels with Grendel chambers. That is what I have ordered and my 4-5 week wait is about up.

Les Baer makes, or sells, good barrels, I have three of them and they all are top notch. If you go with AA get the better barrels, in current offerings that means Shilien. If you do that then there is very little differnce. I have both .295 and .300 necks and both throat configurations. It is all much to do about nothing. A .300 neck will shoot .15" groups at 100 yards. Your goals are sub MOA, either will do this easily.

I don't know why you think you will only be able to reach out to 800 yards on a good day. My 19.5 inch Alexander Arms barreled Grendel develops 2550 FPS with a 123 grain Scenar bullet. The Exbal program says that this load doesn't go transonic until around 1400 yards based on the meteorological and environmental factors that I entered.

I am quite confident shooting my Grendel at 1000-1200 yards..of course, I have to know the trajectory, and adjust for wind, but that applies to any cartridge.

Same here. I've shot to 1180 yds with 123 SMKs with good results. I would not use it for hunting past 500-600 yds for small game, 400 for larger though. Coyotes- I'd poke them with a stick at 1200 yds if I could.Wink

i have a neptune 3 from precision arms..it shoots well although 1 round at a time because of ejection problems..i had a lower on order and cancelled because of lack of interest/follow-up on my upper problem,,i'm now sorting that out myself..when i cancelled i was told no problem because they are so backed up on orders,,but no mention of my upper..now i'll build my own or find a smaller company that's not too busy to remember customer service..remember this is just my experience, maybe i fell through the cracks..if they are that busy they must have happy customers...F\S

Alexander Arms vs. Precision Fire Arms - afpumpman - 03-08-2012

That sucks to hear S.S. The cost of that upper deserves , no, demands that the retailer stands behind his product. I am a week or two out from getting a custom upper from Mark and I sure hate reading your story.

It's unfortunate that you're not getting support, but if you'll share details about the issues with your upper, perhaps the members here can help to diagnose and fix the problem.

It's too bad to hear this, because I've always heard great stories about them. BUT....what can we do to help? Please give us some information and we'll see what we can do. Are you having extraction problems or ejection problems? If it extracts, does it not eject the shell because it doesn't release it?

Pics help too!

Alexander Arms vs. Precision Fire Arms - LRRPF52 - 03-08-2012

Precision Firearms makes good Grendel ammo, I know that. I have 2 50rd boxes of 123gr Silver Scenars loaded in Lapua brass, that group under 1 MOA. They also have a few hunting loads.

appreciate the offer to help correct the issue and i'll take advantage if you don't mind..but first,,i'm not trying to knock Mark,he was very helpful when purchasing my upper,,it simply seems that he got too busy..again this is just my experience,if 5 people eat at the same restaurant 4 can be very happy and 1 not so much..i know i'll get the upper working,,simply wish there was more concern about it rather than a e-mail saying that cancelling the lower wasn't a problem because of a backlog of orders..

The first thing I look at with failure to eject issues involving a Grendel bolt is the extractor. I have encountered a number of extractors with too sharp edges (some ever so slightly burred). This causes the extractor to bite into the case too much on extraction and can result in failures to eject. The easy remedy is kissing the edges of the groove cut into the extractor with a jewelers file to knock off the sharp edge. You should probably also check your ejector button tension as well, but my best bet would be on a sharp extractor being involved if I'm guessing blindly out the gate.Smile

+1 I had to file my extractor a bit too.

I ordered a neptune 5 with a 24" lothar walther barrel. I'm a month overdue. Apparently all of the annondizing companies in his area were backed up. Since I also ordered a matched lower, I had to wait until the lowers got in from being annodized. Mark has been great as far as customer service so far. Other than waiting an extra month, he's ok in my book. I can't wait to get this thing.

variable,,too easy, forgot about that till you wrote,so naturally that was the problem..now if i could figure out how my 'chromed national match carrier' turned into a plain old black one..thanks ..SS

Alexander Arms vs. Precision Fire Arms - second strike - 03-13-2012

landon,,if i'm not mistaken, the neptune 3 [which i have] is a 264 ,not a grendel..also it's also it's advertised as having a 'chromed national match carrier and phosphated bolt' somehow mine turned into plain old black..i've had two bad experiences buying high dollar firearms through the internet and i'm done.put everything together myself from now on..hope yours is a good experience and all goes well..regards..

Mine is advertised with a National Match Carrier also. What did Mark say when your rifle showed up with a phosphate carrier and bolt instead of the NMC? Just curious since this is my first transaction with him.

Second Strike, I sent you a email today regarding the problems you have had with our Upper and the follow-up service. I also have in my records that the upper was a Neptune II modification with Billet receiver Hogue hand guard. The Carrier upgrade was never discussed. Neptune II has never had a chromed carrier due to it being a entry level upper.
