Satern 5r sticking/stuck live rounds - 808hoghunter - 03-15-2021

[ATTACH=CONFIG]17691[/ATTACH]Anybody have trouble with Satern cut rifle barrels having a short throat... got maybe 200 rounds down the tube all at the range .. finally took it hunting and needed to motar live rounds out when got back to truck... looks like bullet is engaging lands slightly.. I get no pressure signs or blown primer.. gonna try clean chamber first .. hopefully I don’t need to ream it Located in Hawaii.

Reloads or factory ammo? If you're reloading you might be able to work with the seating depths to compensate. If factory you might be stuck with certain loads? I'd hate to have to send to/from Hawaii ... certainly cost a lot more money and time. If you have to send it back I would leverage that argument with them.

If cleaning doesn’t help you are going to have to get it reamed or “scraped” as satern would call it.

This. I got bit and I'll never own anything made by them again.

If you have one of their early barrels, they short throated them. "Not their problem."

Short chambered , had one from Radical arms they replaced the barrel , the replacement barrel is a tac driver .

That sucks to hear , this barrel is a tack driver hold .5 inch groups with hornady black.. did a little over an 1 inch 10 shot rapid fire group in 24 mph wind this last week..

Then either have it reamed to spec and hope it maintains accuracy, or leave it and only shoot handloads which will likely lead to an improvement in accuracy.

Probably not wise to start with that. I think I'd want to know exactly where the lands are and how much "setback" it would take to mechanically clear. Then I'd pull some loads and measure the powder charge, likely reducing the charge by some percentage and work it up to establish a safe load, much like if I were developing a new reload.

I think just seating 0.050" deeper is more risky with factory ammo being that there are more unknowns than there would be if you worked up a normal reload.

This can potentially damage our gun.

By pushing the factory bullet back into the case you reduce the case volume and might even be compressing the powder. Whether it compresses or not the pressure is going to increase and it is only a matter of by how much. If there has been some sort of crimping process at the factory by moving the bullet you compromise that as well. Factory rounds are typically loaded close to SAAMI peak pressure limits so increasing the pressure further is likely to cross that line and in an AR you are rolling the dice on breaking it.

By doing this incrementally is a false sense of security because you still have almost no idea what the pressure is.

I would find out exactly when bullets touch lands and decide whether to have it reamed or accept this and hand-load for it.

Here is your options.

Just run handloads, dont shorten factory ammo.

Ream it and it will be safe for factory ammo and possible destroy any accuracy.

Use it as a troat line anchor and buy a new barrel made by a company with better QC.

808, if it were mine I would have it reamed or rent a Manson reamer and do it yourself.

If it won’t shoot after that, send it back to satern with a note telling them where to stick it.

Here is the history best I can recall. Everyone feel free to add to or correct anything I get wrong.

Initially Bill Alexander kept the rights to 6.5 Grendel preventing other barrel makers from making it. This caused hard feelings with other barrel makers.

Satern and their company Liberty agreed to do a group buy with members of this forum. They were told they would be getting a 6.5 Grendel chamber. This was after it was released to other makers.

After delivery, some members found their barrels were short chambered. When contacting Satern/Liberty they were told to send it back and they would scrape the throat. I do recall the members had to pay shipping but I don’t recall if there was a charge for the scraping.

Only when their feet were to the fire did satern admit that it wasn’t a 6.5 Grendel chamber but one they designed.

Man that’s shitty news I thought the problems were only with the liberty side not Satern cut rifled barrels .. shitty deal for a barrel that cost 500 dollars
