AR10 flat wire spring....TOO much???? - RANGER - 12-19-2020
Definitely getting a flat wire (debating between Tubbs and Strike Industries) but wondering if the AR10 will be better choice.
6.5 Grendel 18 barrel with RLGS. Suppressed with TB Ultra 7.
Id like to keep lock time at a maximum but wondering if its too much.
I suppose I could always trim a few coils if it is.
Im reading that the SI are not as long/strong as the Tubbs. Also some are saying theyre noisier.
Thoughts? Experience?

I have 2 builds with Strike Industries flat wire springs. Both builds are AR10 (.308/6.5 Creedmoor). I do prefer them to standard buffer springs in that format. However, this is just my opinion, I dont feel its necessary in the Grendel. No experience with the Tubbs. With the scenario youre trying to explain an adjustable gas block will let you fine tune. You could go JP silent capture but again I dont think its necessary.

I am not sure you can delay the unlocking of a bolt with a stronger spring. You will certainly impede it, and maybe the carrier won't go back far enough. Unlocking timing is more to do with where your port is and dwell time (length of barrel after relative to length of barrel before the port), but am happy to stand corrected on this one.
As for the sound of the spring. I figure 160db of gunshot going off at the same time relegates that concern to an expensive indulgence. Plus, you can't argue that cheap MILSPEC recoil springs are unreliable. Think of investing that money on a better barrel; or replacing it sooner. At least you will see a difference on the target.

I had the same idea using an AR10 buffer spring in my Grendel rifle (20" RLGS, un-suppressed) with a full-length Magpul stock to increase lock time & installed Tubb's flat wire spring in my AR (Tubb video said the AR10 spring would work in AR15s). Ended up taking out the AR10 spring & replaced it with Tubb's flat wire AR15 buffer spring. With the long spring, I had what might be called short strokes. Brass was ejecting (1 to 2 O'clock) but the next round wasn't always being picked up from the magazine. It looked like sometimes the bolt wasn't going far enough back to clear the magazine & allow the next round to be picked up (Factory ammo).
That was all before the pandemic. I haven't been to the range since then to see how the Tubb AR15 buffer spring works. I have also changed my gas block to an adjustable block (SLR). I have no idea when I'll be able to shoot again. The range I shoot on is open again but my cataracts gave me fits the last time I was able to shoot. I have cataract surgery scheduled on 12/29 for my right eye & 01/11 for the left. Maybe by February I can shoot again.

Opted for the Strike industries AR10 spring.
Its a little longer than the Tubbs AR15 and a bit shorter than the Tubbs AR10
Ill report back when I get it running.
