i am going to buy a 6.5 upper for my colt m-4. i have narrowed it down to either a 20" hunter or a 16" tactical , both from alexander arms. would appreciate feedback , as i only want to spend hard earned money once with best results. will be used mainly on paper targets , and varmits. maybe on deer

The longer the barrel, to a point, the further you can be accurate because of higher velocities from the same ammo. Of course there are limits to this & you have to weigh the trade offs. I suggest if you are using it for your stated purposes the 20" would serve you better than the 16" but this is just my opinion. There are some folks on here that are doing awesome work with 16" barrels per their posts.
Where do you live? If you live up in the NE part of the country, you probably aren't talking about shooting longer distances. If you are here in the more open parts of the country, longer range shooting is much more prevalent. 100 yards? Just get the 16". 400 yds? Get the 20".
This is just my opinion. Others will I'm sure post theirs. Better is a pretty subjective word.

How far do ya gotta carry it? If it goes from the safe to the truck to the bench get the 20. If yer gonna lug it around in the woods get the 16".

I would also consider matching the gun to your height if you're going to stalk with it, but from what you've said so far, I would go with the 20". Target, bench, varmints...maybe deer = 20".

As a rough rule of thumb you'll lose about 25 feet per second of muzzle velocity for each inch shorter your barrel is. Since wind becomes dominant at longer ranges, and flat shooters are best for varmints, the 20 might suit you better. You can always cut it down later, but you can't grow it!

IIRC Mr. Bill Alexander believes that the 20 inch barrel is the one that will serve the most uses if a person is limited to only one barrel length. I had a 24 inch barrel, now have an 18, and a 19.5. I like the 19.5 inch barrel from Alexander Arms (Shilen barrel) the best so far.

If your wanting distance its just like they say in cars. Theres no substitute for cubic inches when it comes to motors. So theres no substitute for inches on a barrel either when it comes to greater distances. However if i was going to stalk through the woods i wouldnt want to walk around with my 24 inch rifle its kind of long. Weight isnt much of an issue for me as the stupid song says nowadays (I work out!) Im 227lbs. However at only 5'6" the gun is kind of long to be walking around with. Definately would have a 16 or an 18 if i were on safari lol.
