What buffer weights are you guys using on your 16" Grendel builds?

I’m using carbine weight which came supplied with the collapsable M4 style stock. I use the supplied carbine buffer spring and it has been good to go as long as the barrel has the proper size gas port. I have a 16” carbine gas barrel that was way over gassed where I went with an adjustable Rubber City Armory gas key. I tried different buffer weights but the adjustable gas was the best solution on this barrel. My Faxon 16” Group Buy Monster barrel uses the mid length gas system but also functions fine with the carbine weight buffer or an H2.

If using a suppressor I think your better off to use an adjustable gas block.

Thanks for the info, just finished my first 6.5 G build, BA SPR 16" mid length barrel, will see how the standard carbine buffer handles it, hope to get to the range Friday morning. Thanks again.

Mil spec carbine buffer/spring as always worked well for me, but I have since moved over too the jp scs 100%now.

Fixed stock rifle buffer (5.0 oz) and a Geissele braided wire spring. With rifle length gas, a standard gas block would be fine, but an adjustable gas block really settled it down.

edit to add: oops, missed the part about a 16”...this is a monster 20” RLGS

I use an adjustable gas block on all my other than 5.56 builds. It can fix gas “balance” issues easier than messing with springs and buffers.

Carbine buffer and spring. Brass ejects between 3:00 for brass case and 4:00 for steel case on my Sixfivearms monster build.

Thanks guys, got to the range the other day, Hornady AM gunner ejected at about 4:00 in a nice neat pile about 10' form the bench. Good for now. My try a heavier buffer in the future to see if I can get the pile a little closer the bench, maybe not screw with it and call it good.

Keep in mind that, up to a point anyway, the higher your rifle is off the ground, the farther away your pile will be. For example, if you'd been shooting prone on the ground, that pile might have only been 4-5' away. I would not consider that a very far toss. Thus I wouldn't consider the rifle to be over-gassed/under-damped.

I used a Spike’s ST-T2 on my first AA 16” barrel build.

I’ve also used standard 2.9oz carbine buffers, H, H2, rifle, and JP SCS.

The Maxim PDW mini pistol buffer with its short, stiff spring and tiny RET works really well on 12” CLGS with the correct port.

I took 3 different 20” Grendels to the range once, all with different buffer weights including 2.9oz carbine on up to rifle.

It seemed like the H2 and rifle buffers supported the best ejection and cyclic rate, but that’s subjective.

Bill A. designed the Grendel to be a drop-on complete upper conversion for your existing AR15, with a key emphasis on gas port diameters matched to the gas system and barrel lengths.

With most factory ammo, it works just fine with your existing lower.

The main outlier I’ve seen reliability-wise is the 90gr TNT loads, both from AA (discontinued) and Federal.

They have always had a tendency to short-stroke the action in some AR15s.

My 12” runs them like a raped ape suppressed, but not unsuppressed.
