Hey guys, I was looking for some advice on handguards. I have an AA Advanced Weapon System 24 upper. I just purchased an 18 barrel kit from a member here and will be swapping it over when it comes in, in order to go from a heavier, bench rest gun, to a lighter gun I can use to hunt on foot. Currently, I have a Midwest Industries two-piece quad-rail on it. Im looking to drop some of that weight in favor of an m-lock handguard. Im looking for a long-ish handguard, because I like the longer sight radius for BUIS, and I like to get my bipod on out there towards the end, so I guess Im looking for something at least 15 long. I do have an m-lock compatible bipod that I will be using. I am not looking to be able to attach more than the BUIS, bipod and, at times, possibly a small light. Obviously I am looking for a free-floating handguard. Do you guys have any recommendations? Im also wondering if a round handguard might be nice, vs. an octagonal one? What do you guys think? Any recommendations would be appreciated!

I like the Midwest Industries Ultra Light weight 15 (MI-ULW15). Fits your requirements but they're around $259. They use a titanium barrel nut and eliminate the full length picatinny with enough rail to mount a front BUIS. Add 3 slot mlok rail sections for a light and bipod and you're gtg.
Not being familiar with your AA upper, just check to make sure it's compatible. If it's a forged upper, should work fine.
Round or octagonal is mostly personal preference. The MI I mentioned is octagonal. If you prefer round, just add their handguard cover sections where you want them to round it out.
I run one on a DMR with the hand guard sections and rail section for my bipod, really like it. Others will chime in with offerings that may be better suited to what budget you have in mind.

I have an Aero Atlas R-One on my M5 Creedmoor build, and am very impressed with the slim feel & low weight. Wouldn't hesitate to use an Atlas on future AR15 builds based on my experience with the large frame handguard. I used to recommend ALG rails, but they seem to be discontinued. If you can find a used ALG EMR V2 or V3, that would fit the bill as well.

Thanks for the replies guys. Those are all great options. I do like the Midwest Industries rails. It looks like theyre out of stock on the manufacturers site right now. Those STNGR rails are pretty sweet, and I appreciate the link to the weights and the photo. I do like Aero products and their little innovations like unobtrusive anti-rotation tabs on their handguards. I have been looking at and really considering ALG handguards. I like their barrel nut/attachment system. I like that Precision Firearms offers an 18 model, and I think most of these recommendations involve a non-timed barrel nut. I think Im going to pick out the models I like from each of the brand recommendations and make a list with length, weight and material strength and see who comes out on top. Thanks guys!

If I was building another rifle with the primary purpose for hunting, it would be sporting a carbon fiber handguard. The feel of it in cold or hot weather, the way it minimizes sound when it bumps up against things without the loud clunk are just a couple of reasons why.

What does the barrel nut look like? Im looking at one for my sbr and they dont show barrel nut in pics. Is there a way to keep the rail from spinning? Thanks for any info you can pass along.

its a non timed nut, and it goes around the receiver, so no spinning from the tabs
