I'm considering the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP for my AR15 Grendel for long range competition. Any thoughts???

You mean other than the fact it will suck for close range?
That is one hell of a scope and even better for the money.

Even for F class you might be better off with the 2.5-10x

Interesting you say that, because I used a Vortex 2-7x for a Designated Marksman class which dealt with ranges from 0 to 300 yards. But, for reaching out to 600 yards and beyond, you'd still recommend that same mag. range...

10x is still more than the 7x.
If my Leupold was not mounted I would loan it to you so you can determine if the magnification would better suit your needs.
It is a 6.5-20x and I almost never turn it up, remember at high magnification another set of problems can arise.
Mirage - you know how it is around here when the soil gets hot and there is humidity and not enough wind. Like looking through a swimming pool.
exacerbation of movement of the cross-hairs, sometimes 10x is all you would need.
600 is not too far for a 10x magnification
If you are not strapped for cash just get the 6-24x, then have the ability to use a Quick release mount and be able to swap scopes.

Shooting F Class, even at 600, with the 3" X ring, 10 X is a stretch to do the job. Most 10X scopes have fairly thick crosshairs, and that makes it harder.
I usually shoot my F class rig with the 12-42 set between 20-30 for 600 yards, and at the same place for 1000 if there is lots of mirage.
If there is no mirage, I'll crank it up to 42 at 1000.

El Wray, if long range competition includes any run and gun matches; you are going to want the ability to use lower power settings due to your elevated pulse rate and respiration.
I used 10x fixed power w/1/8 minute target dot ret. for F-class. Then tried a 3.5X15; then a 6.5X20 blueprinted by Premier reticles. Wind and mirage kept me humble far more than lack of glass.
Bottom line; tailor your glass for the game(s) you want to play. IMHO, different games require either compramise or multilple scopes/rifles. Just the ravings of a geezer.

6.5-20x seems to be popular too, which is why for a less expensive option, I was also considering the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 PA Mil-dot scope. Shooting is an open F-class competition with a range out to 600 yards.

But for your application I'd suggest the 6-24 hands down. Higher magnification, thinner reticle (good for F-Class) and at least between the two of mine, the 6-24 has significantly better glass than the 4-16. Don't ask me why, but it does. :confused:

I believe it's this one. Not cheap, but I really like the left side HK non-recip approach. (Too many years shooting an HK-91)

Yep, both by handle location & first production date. But by design date the FAL, CETME (HK) are both about the same time. And the French CEAM Beat both the FAL and CETME into production, starting in about '50.
All were derived from the STG-44 & 45 work, which is where the "off side" charging handle came from. But the STG's did not have the folding handle, non-recip aspect.
I find the "offside" charging handle faster and more intuitive on pistol grip rifles, though I've been dealing with M1/m14 right side long enough it's muscle memory. Of them all the AR rear charge handle to me is the least intuitive. Just need to practice more!
Many who dis the HK forward handles are basing that on mis-adjusted clones. The real deal is very easy to work.

Did you get a chance to look through that 2.4-10x44 Viper PST I have on my .260 when we were up there? I think it's not enough glass for the .260 for most folks at distance, but will be fine on my 16" Grendel or an SPR. I want something with 14 or 16 power on the top end, and a larger objective for the .260 AR10, so I'll be looking at some 50mm or 56mm objectives. I really like the Hensoldt 2-12x56 Mildot, but at $4200...I'll just enjoy the ones my friends have until I get some reward money for diming out some high-value target.

The 6-24x50 PST's have very clear glass. It's comparable to much more expensive optics, and yes I have a S&B PMII to compare. The resolution is better on the S&B but the clarity is pretty damn close. Vortex has top knoch customer service, as well!

I've got one of the Vortex Viper 30mm tubed 6.5-20 and its a damn nice scope for the coin..Put it on the 6.5/300 WSM bolt gun I just built.
