I figure the 6.5 Grendel is a big enough cartridge that just about anything would work.
Anyone have any strong opinions?
I hand load.
90gr TNT, 100gr TTSX, Partition, 107gr TMK, 120gr Gold Dots?
Saw a gel shot on ar15.com of a 123gr SST from a 12" barrel that looked good.

I water tested (Gallon Water Jugs lined up) 85 grain Sierra Varmint, 90 grain TNT and 95 grain V-Max and I would use any of the three. Double Naught Spy has had really good results with 90 grain TNT factory ammo. In my AO in a very rural setting I have 123 grain ELD-M factory ammo in my 12 PSA 6.5 Grendel pistol mags. I tend to use Factory ammo in my self defense weapons. If your not concerned with perforating the target about any expanding 6.5 Grendel bullet should work. Id only use FMJ ammo as a last resort in a SD situation in 6.5 Grendel.
Short answer, factory ammo, either Federal 90 grain TNT or 120 grain Gold Dot. Hornady 123 grain SST/ELD-M or PPU/Wolf 120 grain HPBT/MPT. There are companies selling factory loaded 100 grain Sierra Varmint and 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip which should also work.

I live in the woods and don't have kids in my house so I'm not worried about the bullet going through walls.
I'm sure others belive their are better bullets for this job and on paper they might be right but at room distance dead is dead.

Second the opinion on using factory ammo for self defense. In my book under 50 yds, use what DNS uses to drop 1000 hogs, the federal 90 gr Tnt.

So I had been moving away from the 90gr TNT because I couldn't find a gel shot to look over.
I know members on here slay hogs all night long, but I don't feel ear and neck shots are good comparisons to typical self defense situations. (No ding on them, seems perfect for what they need)

Shoots a large water bin at 100 yards. MV = 2750 fps and I calculated ImpactV = 2482 fps (Is that correct?)
There are a lot of large bits of shrapnel, not small dust-like particles. Still, I would like to see a gel shot to compare to the 123gr SST.
Also there is a 120gr Gold Dot shoot; looks great!

I would personally pick - and have btw - a different caliber for under 50 yard self defense rounds. Blackout subs, or lightweight supers for instance. Any subs should be carrying 1400+ ft lbs at 50, and supers should be moving at 2200fps+. In the subs, it's the delivered energy; in the supers, it's the velocity. Grendel would work for supers, but they're dangerous if you consider over penetration. If that isn't an issue, then they're okay I guess.
One of these days, I'll figure out how to make a 454SOCOM or BEOWULF barrel that sits directly under a Grendel barrel, with select fire between, and mags that seat side by side. That'd be a pretty fun little SHTF rifle, if ammunition wasn't an issue.... hey a guy can fantasize. Leave me be...

A good resource for ammunition for self defense and wound ballistics is Dr. Gary Roberts or docgkr
You can google his name and research.
FMJ is great for barrier penetration, however; it lacks expansion and in a self defense you can't afford to punch through everything with people
in the way/houses/etc.
The military tends to use fmj and I'm pretty sure tier 0 or tier 1 units can use whatever bullet they want.
In the past marines have used ssot rounds that had some expansion.
The fbi and police units tend to use bonded soft points or soft points for rifles. We know of course the fbi standard is 12-18 inches of penetration. Past shootouts like the Miami shootout
and the California bank heist where the malicious people had rifles and body armor caused the fbi and police lots of issues. Hence why they went with a .40sw round later on and now with better technology
they have went back to the 9mm with better hollowpoints. Also, why they started to arm themselves with rifles/more tac gear/etc.
Now based on Doctor Roberts recommendation for rifle bonded soft points are the best compromise for expansion/enough penetration/and barrier blind shooting.
He states if barrier blind isn't a requirement ammo such as amax/edm can be used for the fragmentation effect with enough penetration to meet the 12-18 inches of penetration.
Personally, I think 120 grain gold dot would be a good self defense round for expansion/fbi penetration/and barrier blind shooting.
The 129 grain ablr would work great as well.
If barrier blind is not a requirement by you then sst and edm would make good fragmentation rounds.
I would guess tnt also, however; I'm not sure the penetration for these rounds. Do they meet the fbi standard?
life is random we don't know what situation we will get into.
we see car jackings/mobs/people with guns against you more frequently. It changed my requirements defiantly with how many mags I'll ccw for handgun.
For my requirements for rifle for self defense it has to meet fbi penetration/expansion/with barrier blind options/also double down as a hunting round (bonded soft point).

With the requirement of also winning in court my first requirement is factory loaded ammo and second is no over penetration, houses on both sides and in front of mine. Front of my house is brick so it is less of a concern but, so my choices are limited if using an AR pistol, and my choice is the 223/300BO. There are factory loads that fit my needs in both rounds.

90 grain TNT do a lot of damage at 150 yds to a hogs internal organs.Humans are much more delicate. And at 50 yards it would be very deadly.Although 6.5 Grendel would never be my self-defense weapon of choice. If its all I had in my hands at the time, ID hope its loaded with 90 grain TNT.

What's wrong with the 6.5 Grendel?
From what I have seen it looks great for HD / SD.
123gr SST from a 12" looked about the best anything could do. Ar15.com on youtube two videos, the newer one is 12".
120gr Gold Dot looks good.
90gr TNT is the HV hog slayer.

Well, I have literally killed hundreds of hogs with TNTs and I might agree with you if all I took were "ear and neck shots," but I don't. I am one of those folks who feels like CNS shots reveal about the least about bullet performance, particularly head/brain shots. That is why I like to do a lot of actual ammo testing and shooting hogs in different areas and at different angles.
I like the TNTs because they do a bunch of damage and because the bullets break up significantly and while they often don't over penetrate, when they do, it is of smaller fragment less apt to do much harm down range.

Honestly the ballistic performance of the wolf ammo was pretty good out of a 12" barrel. That being the case any of the soft point or ballistic tip bullets should perform very well. Don't over think it.
