Power Pro Varmint weirdness - P_ham86 - 05-16-2020 Hello all, I've been lurking for quite a while, finally have something to post! Inspired by Mel's recent trials of PPV I decided to give it another go. The only bullets I really have available at this time are 130eldm so that's what I'm using. I was velocity testing today, looking for pressure, and had a .6gr spread towards the top end where the velocity completely went flat. This doesnt make any sense to me, primers are rounded, no ejector swipes, etc.. Has anybody run into this before? I'm shooting a 24" Liberty (yes I know) Grendel II (yes I know) chamber. 2.33" OAL Starline brass FED 205 Rifle is set up as a straight pull bolt, it's very easy on brass and I dont have any issues with the softer primers. Charge weights are WAY over max, but again my OAL is long, as is the throat. 29.8- 2611 29.9- 2600 30.0- 2613 30.1- 2613 30.2- 2611 30.3- 2611 30.4- 2623 - very slight ejector swipe, stopped there. Power Pro Varmint weirdness - tdbru - 05-16-2020 P_ham86, i've not encountered that with APPV yet. not sure what to make of it. a caution, though, on increasing pressure. the barrel extension which the bolt lugs lock into isn't as substantial as the receiver bolt lug abutments that bolt actions lock into. though you're not getting any catastrophic failure, which just means that the heat treat on the barrel extension was done correctly, as you continue to stress this interface above what it was designed to sustain, i suspect one risk is that the bolt lugs will begin go bend/crack at their root and that the extension abutments will also start to bend a little. if you have a way to measure headspace accurately, please do keep a close eye on this parameter as you pursue your upper end loads. usually headspace will start increasing prior to onset of catastrophic failure. once the chamber pressure is high enough to start to bend parts, as shows up as increasing headspace, both the bolt and the barrel extension need to be scrapped and replaced. since the SAAMI MAP spec for the 6.5 Grendel is 52K psi (not CUP!) your primers will likely not show any classic pressure signs until you're well above SAAMI MAP levels. at which point the forces on the barrel extension lug abutments and the bolt lugs are above their design limits for long term sustainability i would presume. due to the larger case head area as compared to the 223 case, for any given comparable chamber pressure, the force on the Grendel bolt lugs and barrel extension will be greater. force = pressure x area. so for the same force, the chamber pressure in the Grendel needs to be lower than the 223. and this will reduce the classic pressure sign on primers. as others have said, if you need a 6.5-300 Weatherby, buy one. you shouldn't try and turn the Grendel into something it isn't. hopefully you don't take this as an insult. not meant that way. just suggesting caution so your rifle will run, safely, a long time, and you never have to deal with a ka-boom. -tdbru Power Pro Varmint weirdness - FRB6.5 - 05-16-2020 Restating this from tdbru for emphasis "since the SAAMI MAP spec for the 6.5 Grendel is 52K psi (not CUP!) your primers will likely not show any classic pressure signs until you're well above SAAMI MAP levels." Power Pro Varmint weirdness - P_ham86 - 05-17-2020 Thanks for concern, I knew a lecture was coming as soon as I put my load up. I am loaded .070" longer than published COAL and am .055" off the lands. I figured out the issue, the fed 205s arent hot enough to reliably ignite the denser charges. I did find a good load with further testing. 2607fps avg 3 sd 7es Power Pro Varmint weirdness - A5BLASTER - 05-17-2020 P_ham86 Wrote:Hello all, I've been lurking for quite a while, finally have something to post! Either your chrongraph gave bad readings are your powder throw didn't give the throw you wanted would be the first things my mind sees. Are it could be a high pressure sign caused by who knows what. Power Pro Varmint weirdness - tdbru - 05-17-2020 P_ham86, we just want you to be a long term happy forum member who has all 10 digits and sight in both eyes!! and give Rem 7 1/2 a try if you need a warmer spark plug. i've been using APPV myself. haven't found "the" load yet, for that powder. still working on it. -tdbru Power Pro Varmint weirdness - P_ham86 - 05-17-2020 tdbru Wrote:P_ham86, I understand and I'm not upset. I dont have 7 1/2, 450, 41, 205AR....available in my area. I can get cci 400s and fed 205s. The federals are easier to get. I have noticed the 400s are between 20 and 40fps faster than the 205s. The federals are also quite a bit softer. Power Pro Varmint weirdness - P_ham86 - 05-17-2020 tdbru Wrote:P_ham86, I understand and I'm not upset. I can only get cci 400s or fed 205s in my area right now. I'm not paying hazmat shipping. Ppv has been fairly unimpressive until today. There's nothing odd about seeing a flat spread when the charge weights aren't that different. You loaded up the ladder in .1gr increments, which won't show much resolution at all, as you confirmed. Variance in case internal volume plus neck tension will have more of an effect on velocity than the spread of .1 gr increments you loaded. Looking at Sierra's data for 130gr TMK, they show 28.5gr as the max load with that powder and a 2.260" COL, with 2450fps max speed from a 24" barrel. You're loading to almost 2 grains over that with a longer COL at 2.330" and getting consistency over 2600fps. Without pressure trace data, it's hard to say what chamber pressures you're reaching, but it's common to see a peak and a dip as excessive pressure signs in a rifle. The SAAMI spec for Grendel brass max yield is 60,000psi, which is meant to be a factor of safety over the 50,000psi working pressure. We don't want to get anywhere near that if we care about case life and case failures. There's probably a general rule you can follow about longer throats and COLs equating to certain % of pressure reduction, which can then be filled with more charge weight to get back up to the Maximum Average Pressure listed by SAAMI. Does it allow an additional 2 full grains of powder in your case? I think you've gone past that point, so I would be happy with the mid-29.x charge weight range and not tempt things beyond that. Anything over 2500fps with a 130gr in a Grendel is normally in max pressure territory or beyond, but PPV seems to be one of the few powders to do that with. I can't really give much advice in the absence of calibrating that chamber with pressure trace equipment, but I suspect you're well over 55,000psi, probably into or over 58,000psi. AR15 bolt lugs and barrel extension teeth with wider cartridges than 5.56 will not do well with charges over 55,000psi. If you look at the .30 Remington AR, they used an AR10 bolt head diameter, but still with AR15-length lugs and teeth. It was limited to 55,000psi per SAAMI still when Remington submitted it, because they did extensive pressure testing and engineering analysis of the pressure containment components for the R-15 in 30 RAR.
