I got out to my hog stand this morning, Moon was bright enough so that I did not need a flashlight to walk the swamp edge. I usually walk thru water to get to this area but it was bone dry today. I quietly got to my ladder stand and put the pull rope on my grendel..I looked behind me and there was a Hog walking to me only 12 yards away. As I was getting my rifle back he ran off but I could see him running off thru the scrub, I put pressure on the green light switch and put cross hairs on his nose and missed him as he was running back thru the scrub. I sat in the stand till 8:30am watching A doe and her yearling from last year feed all around me and then at the hog feeder. I did not find any blood and I grid searched for 45 minutes and never found any sign of a hit. The water level is down in our woods and swamps so I was scouting as I was grid searching finding a lot of last years buck rubs. I went back to the stand and pulled the SD card from the camera. When I reviewed the pictures I saw about 20 pictures of deer feeding with a hog or two. In my area deer always run from the hogs, when I have deer or turkeys in front of me they let me know if the hogs are near by running off. I have hunted deer and hogs for 42 years here in North Central Florida and deer always run when hogs or bears are nearby. Things are changing...Last year I had one picture of a hog and deer together and had at least 20 pics in the last 3 weeks of them together. It looks like most of the deer are young bucks not the old smart does.

This is one of my favorite hog stands to put meat in our freezer. I took 5 hogs there last year with my Grendel and 4 at other nearby areas. Most of the time the hogs come in from the west or NW right at last light. This group came in at 12:30 (clock is off 1 hour) Friday afternoon, Temps were in the high 80s. sundowner, there are about 6 main trails that come onto this patch of high ground. That is one of them, some years there are scrapes close to where the deer on right is. 4 years ago about 20 yards behind the smaller deer I saw something dark slowly moving thru the scrub..thinking it was some small hogs I got ready for the sounder to arrive..No, It was a monster gator at least 12 ft long moving from the Cypress swamp to the large wet lands pond to the south.

The relationship between hogs and deer is one that is mixed. I have shot several hogs in fairly close proximity to deer. I have seen deer run when a hog shows up at the feeder. To be fair, I have seen deer run when a coyote, bobcat, or raccoon show up as well. I have seen hogs actively chase off deer from a feeder.
When the hogs behave well, the deer don't seem to mind them. However, many deer will avoid them outright, probably because previous hogs had not behaved well.

On my current hunt club the raccoons and deer feed together, I have seen the deer try to stomp a racoon. My buddy sent me a pic of a 8 point who had a coon pinned down with his antlers.. The hunt club I was on years ago had a bear or two and we might see one a couple of times a year...then somebody released over 70 hogs onto the property or the neighbors? no fence..and the hogs multiplied quickly becoming a problem. The property was a pine plantation with river swamp and very thick, no open fields. We put out feeders hoping to bring the hogs in to shoot them, that worked but not everybody on the lease wanted to "mess with a hog"..Within 2 years we were covered up with hogs and would see several bears hanging around the soy bean feeders.. We used soy beans because bears did not prefer to eat them and when they did you would find piles of puke with soybeans in it. We called in a trapper..Hog traps did not work because bears would get the hogs from the traps and the guy gave up. .We think we had at least 20 different adult bears, I had pictures of sow bears with 3 and sometimes 4 cubs..The bears would wait for the hogs to show up and then run them down. Our bears do not hibernate and they eat all year so they can get pretty big. The is no bear hunting in my state and some of the bears have lost their fear of man..they don't always run from us. I had a bear follow 15 yards behind me for about 150 yards popping its jaws and all I had was a recurve bow and a folding knife. In 5 years on our new lease I have not seen any bears but one was seen by one of our members.

One night last summer I spotted 3 targets several hundred yards out from my barn. Humidity was high,and it was a warm night, so the imagery on my scope was not at it's best. I thought I was seeing 3 deer "horsing" around. When I got a better image I realized that it was hogs. I took a pot shot, missed, and two of them ran off. Then I could tell the third one was a deer, and she stayed put. The morning I went out to that area and found the slightly mutilated fawn, and realized what had happened. One of the hogs was chasing the doe off while the other was attacking the fawn. I wish I had got out there sooner. In addition to tearing up the pastures, that gave me another reason to hate hogs. KILL'EM ALL.

I hunt in Florida and all the bears i have seen in the woods had straight fear of humans. They bolted as fast as they could the instant they saw or winded us. Around campgrounds and residential areas is a different story.
And there was a recent bear hunt in Florida. Problem was a bunch of people bought tags but then the limit was hit in 2 days and everyone else just lost their money.
