If you don't do significant damage to the upper CNS, either directly (direct impact of bullet) or indirectly (hydraulic or hydrostatic shock), expect the hogs to run. Fortunately, your sow didn't run. No reason to be surprised the first sow isn't immediately dead. The shot was aimed and hit well below the spine and well below the brain. You got a lot of hydraulic damage (gelatinized tissue) of largely non vital structures (muscles). The bullet did its job, but in the wrong place. Mixed Results - HuntTXhogs - 04-28-2020 We learn through experience - your approach has similarities to mine in that we’ve both tried MANY calibers and bullets and made assessments and conclusions based on performance and data in the field. What we need to remember as we work up and down the caliber ladder is not to assess any individual caliber to the same standards and results that we achieved in another without careful examination of the similarities in testing. Your use of the hammer monolithic bullet in 6.5 Creedmoor would be an optimum performance choice due to what really makes solid lead free bullets shine. They’re lighter weight than standard cup and core or jacketed bullets - long - and need high velocity to open and work. The bullet may not be optimal in Grendel but that is in no way inline with Grendels proven performance with so many other bullet weights and designs. The optimal lead free pill weight in my opinion for Grendel is 85 grains at 3000 FPS muzzle velocity. The heavier calibers continue to afford us a bit more forgiving spread of options and DRT opportunities at the added cost of rifle weight and component cost (powders/primers/etc). Placement placement is important . Mixed Results - Double Naught Spy - 05-02-2020 Mixed results in Creedmoor land? Can't find hog #1 with a low shot on the neck. It was still visible after it went down, so apparently it got up and ran off when you weren't looking? The grass isn't that high, LOL. Hog #2 experienced a miracle and was able to get up and run away with a shot reported to have separated the spine and after having his heart "blown out" (shot #1 on this hog). Shot at a total of 7 times to finally stop it. Hog #3 got up and tried to get away, but finally succumbed to its wound. Not a single DRT hog recovered. But that isn't the fault of the caliber.
