Mixed Bag Results 8 Hogs Hit 6 Recovered - Double Naught Spy - 04-24-2020
I should have stopped after my first shot and called it a night, making a 215 yard head shot on one of two boars that were out and about. I had this great plan to shoot the smaller one and pick up the larger one on the run (larger being easier to hit, right?) and then could not hit the larger one until just before it got off property.
Boar #3 was a good shot at reasonable range, but there wasn't anything I could do about the range as I had managed to get my self tangled up in a briar patch and was effectively trapped. I could probably have run out of it had I needed to do so, but otherwise the stuff was wrapped around one leg and biting into the fabric (and me). Had to use the light, after the shot, to get disentangled.
Boar #4 was spotted in a low valley that is a swampy mess at the low center of it. He was a long way off when I started my stalk. Thinking myself smart, I found a tree in the field to keep between him and so that he would not see my movement as there were houses behind me with lights on and I would be backlight. Given the direction he was headed, I expected him to pass to my left less than 150 yards away which would be great. So I lost sight of him as I moved up a couple hundred yards and then I heard splashing noises. He has changed directions and come towards me and cut across my path ~70 yards in front of me. This was a bit of a shocking surprise as he was big and closer than expected. At 250 lbs and short range, he was an easy shot.
While taking pictures, I would scan my surroundings and spotted hogs at the top of the hill 300-350 yards away. It turned out to be a large sounder that I could never see all at once because some would come down the hill the side of the hill where I was and some would remain on top and out of sight. I shot four and should have recovered four but somehow missed one in my search. It was a shoat shot through the shoulder so I am sure it was done and down, but I didn't find it.
