More Pasture Plows Down - Double Naught Spy - 04-07-2020
This is a tough property to hunt. It is 500 acres of which only about 100 are open or open parkland. The rest is heavy forest with virtually no vehicle trails. I have a feeder set up that sometimes let's me know when the hogs are coming out, but in the last week, they came out in force and ruined the pasture. All the corn was gone from under the feeder, so I knew I had them coming. I set up between the feeder and the field with all the damage, just inside the tree line with the idea that I could leave my spot overlooking the feeder and check the field every so often. Sure enough, the hogs appeared, but well north and down wind of me which was not good. They had come in from the west (based on hogs I saw coming out of the woods) and so I sneaked my way though the edge of the woods to try to stay out of sight and out of the breeze as much as possible.
I have said for years that anybody can kill a large hog, but shooting piglets can be tough. Sadly, I was proven right on this hunt.

would a bullet that penetrates deeper than the 90 TNT work better?? curious. or do you need the speed to flatten things out?? there's no feral piggies up this way. if i get a chance to hunt deer this year it will be with a bit tougher bullet than the 90gr. TNT methinks.

The hardest part on runners is to actually shoot where they are not. Sounds crazy, but many folks (including me) have/had mental blocks to doing that. Probably the next hardest thing is learning from your previous shots. I watch videos all the time where people will aim at the same place and miss every time. They may even be trying to lead the hog by putting it on its head or nose, but that amount of lead may not be far enough in front for the ammo being shot, distance of the hog, and speed of the hog.
If you like mental exercises to help visualize what is necessary, play with the numbers of the velocity of your ammo, distances to targets, and relative lateral speed of the targets and this will give you some idea about how much lead may be necessary.
For example, my ammo has a velocity of 2800 fps. It will take the ammo 0.22 seconds to go 180 yards. A hog running 15 mph is moving at 22 feet per second. Multiplied by 0.22 gives you a travel distance of 4.84 feet. So basically, you need to aim near 5 ft in front of the animal to make the shot at that distance.
Now do I have all this in my head at the time? No, of course not, but I know that I don't need to be aiming at the hog or putting the sights on the nose of a hog (both common behaviors) that is a long way away.

DNS, when I watch you shoot runners, I am always amazed at the amount of forward lead you put on a hog.
Most of my pig kills are under a feeder , so no lead........
Every year opening day of dove season, it takes me 10 or 15 shots to get my eye back. You just keep shooting with the same lead and expect different results. If your going to miss them , miss them in front.
Follow through on every shot...

My experience at runners is narrowed to yoats and deer.
I'm a disaster trying to hit running dogs. Deer I'm so so.
There is no replacement for experience. It's certainly a talent that requires practice.

Good video, and good shootin. "Pasture Plows", lol, first time I've heard that one. I've read that feral hogs can run nearly 30 mph when they have the right "incentive"
. Don't know if that's true, but they can run a lot faster than they"appear" to be running. Another variable that affects me is the level of magnification I may have on the scope at the moment. Shouldn't matter, but it just makes it look different. I use a "circle dot" reticle, and the diameter of the circle helps to gauge the amount of lead for me. Only problem is, I can't remember from one time to the next how the "picture" looked when it worked Thanks again.

Jkruger, hitting dogs on the run is really tough for me. Usually for me it is an exercise in making noise, burning money, hitting dirt, and scaring the coyotes unnecessarily. Stationary is always better and even then coyotes vex me.
Sorry about the math. It is the only way I can fathom why a bullet traveling so fast really isn't a laser.

Lol..... I'm with you on making noise and dirt fly. I reload , so making more isn't a problem.
I think when a critter is in warp drive I tend to mash the trigger leading to negative results!!
