So picked up a box of these projectiles direct off the Aussie manufacturer at a local gunshop, very interesting design, super sleek Hunting projectile and shorter than Sierra 107gr Matchkings. Even utilizing most of the Mag space and seating out further than ever before I 'm not touching the lands.

Manufacturer recommends a 0.035 jump up to 0.050 so I may bring it back from the 2.300 I have in the pics.

Hoping to loaded up this week and do some testing

That looks very sleek indeed. Paging BFT!

Any info on expansion threshold on those monos? Looks freakin awesome!

That has a huge relief band.

Makes me lean towards using faster powders to generate consistent start pressure, similar to ho GS Customs HV bullets are driven.

Did they have any tested Grendel data?

Note that they are .265” dia. Their website shows 3 others at 0.264”.

The only load data for that bullet is for the 6.5x55 Swede.

Maybe they made it for looser military bores, but it will generate more pressure with that larger diameter.

There are benchrest shooters who use custom bullets with slightly larger diameters so they get better accuracy, but that doesn't seem to be the intent with this bullet.

There is something they felt needed to be addressed with 6.5x55 by going with a .001" larger bullet.

Don't see any US distributors must be only available in Oziland?

Righto Ive had 2 quick range sessions with these OEP 103gr projectiles and a couple of things standout out.

Firstly they seem to want to shoot, I used once fired Hornady brass that I trimmed back a little too heavy in hindsight (1.515) as I noticed that the overly large waist pressure relieving groove along with the slippery lube meant loads that I used for 107gr SMK had the projectiles wanting to back out badly.

Only 1.5mm of bullet is contacting the neck either side of the groove, maybe 3mm total. Speeds were down as I just couldn't do my normal crush load

30.5gr of 8208 pushed the 103gr OEP to 2725fps, solid but I felt 2800fps should have been achievable. Case length was kept to 2.280

After chatting with a mate he suggested taking a thou off the neck sizing mandrel to help with neck tension. So I took it out of the die and I spun it in a drill against some sandpaper. 1 thou off, I loaded up the longest prepped brass I had on hand which was mostly 1.518/1.519. I also let the projectile out a little to 2.290, thou when I checked loads in the morning some had back out to 2.295 and up to 2.299. teh Manufacturer recommends 0.035-0.050 off the lands for best accuracy.

0.265 has obviously been done because there is very little billet touching the lands

Not ideal but I ran them all thru the seating die again but they didnt get fired for 5 hrs so I expect a few had backed out again, i didnt bother measuring again ...

Magnetospeed sporter was used for the session, Lee hand press LOL and RCBS scales at the kitchen table.

Howa Mini 20 inch HB Krytek stock, 1.5 lb trigger, 7 shot OEM magazine...
OEP 103 GR HP, 8208
Hornady once fired brass 1.518/2.290

30.0gr 2650 2675 2672 2662 2670
30.3gr 2714 2717 2706 2708 2688
30.5gr 2726 2723 2697 2723 2738
30.8gr 2740 2721 2730 2738 2731
31.0gr 2764 2790

No pressure signs were detected.

I plan on testing the 113gr BBT OEP next as I believe the weight, higher BC (0.475) and no massive groove might make easy to extract a better 500m hunting projectile load.

a few pics, this is my 2nd Howa Grendel, around 300 rounds down the tube and it definitely shoots better with 15-20 down the tube. Barrel was shiny and clean before hand.

30.8gr was showing a lot of potential, not sure If I pulled the last shot or if the pill had shifted out more than the others and increasing pressure.....

What is the coating on the bullet?

Outer Edge 6.5mm 0.265 103gr HP Hunting mono - Stevil - 03-10-2020

This is what's on the website, whatever it is... Barrel is still easy to clean.

OEP bullets are precision CNC turned copper projectiles
coated with an advanced proprietary coating
(not moly) designed to deliver the following benefits:
• A dedicated bullet designed for your cartridge
and barrel combination to deliver precision and
devastating performance.
• Consistent expansion qualities that penetrate
deeply, maximising the wound channel from any
shot angle. 120% calibre expansion is typical of
OEP bullets at normal hunting distances.
• Designed to feed reliably in all types of rifles and
magazines
• Coated with an advanced proprietary dry lube
coating that (unlike moly) is easy to remove when
cleaning. It is non corrosive, keeps your barrel
cooler and cleaner and reduces wear.
• Nontoxic – a comforting feature for those who
consume their harvest

Thanks Stevil, interesting report.

Next lot of reloading will be with BM2 ( Benchmark), around 30gr should be top load behind the 113gr BBT, certainly shouldnt have the compressed load issues I was having.

Expanding to 0.318" (120%) from 0.265" does not sound like much.

Outer Edge 6.5mm 0.265 103gr HP Hunting mono - Stevil - 03-12-2020

ported when something expands 100% it generally doubles in size. I handled a projectile that had been fired from a 7x57 in a decent size Sambar deer and it had more than double in calibre.

So the 113gr BBT OEP ( Ball bearing tipped) arrived over night and as I suspected these look to be a better fit for the grendel case ( smaller groove in the middle).

A quick test load to max mag length had the overall length at 2.330. Test feed all good, no rifling marks so the long sleek ogive design of 19.5mm look s good at this stage.

a few pics, 103gr SMK and the 103gr OEP HP for perspective.

I have around 20mm of projectile exposed plus the small amount the steel ball bearing tip (BC 0.475)

0.265 x 100% = 0.265

Doubling in size is x2, which is 200%. So they mean 220% expansion?

Either way I looked at the price of these... holy ish, expensive!

The first price is 5+ boxes... these are in australian dollars... they convert to US as ranging from $43 for the cheapest to $56 for the most expensive... Plus shipping to US

Considering the large bearing surface relief band on the HP flavor (when contrasting it with the smaller relief band on the BBTs), I wonder if the band was enlarged to help establish/maintain a proper longitudinal balance (i.e. axial Center of Gravity) given the lower mass on the nose of the HP flavor of the projectile. If so, it's an interesting design decision. I wonder which flavor came first in their design evolution.

Is it a reasonable extrapolation that relief bands designed into/onto a projectile's bearing surface, don't contribute to substantive deltas in aerodynamic performance of a projectile (vs. considering deltas imputed by changes in nose, ogive, and tail (flat vs BT) geometry)?

I suspect that one could also presume that a reduction in friction, via a reduction of the bearing surface contact geometry, could also contribute to a decrease in chamber/bore pressures.?. Maybe this is why the HP version is .001" over-sized (offsetting large-relief-band-related pressure reductions).?.
