Sizing for gasser - Northranch - 03-02-2020 I have not reloaded a lot but have successfully for a bolt 223 and ar-15 223. For my Grendel I have set my rcbs sizing die per instructions. I have an old lee turret press. I cannot get the brass to chamber. Is it possible there is to much slop it the turret plate? Do I need to screw the die down a little more? Sizing for gasser - LRRPF52 - 03-02-2020 You need to full-length size for gas-operated firearms. Get the Hornady comparator tool so you can move the shoulder to where you need it to go without moving it too much. ![]()
Sizing for gasser - Northranch - 03-02-2020 I do have the full length dies. My lee press does not cam over. Is this something I need to take into consideration? Thanks Sizing for gasser - Northranch - 03-02-2020 I will get that tool also Sizing for gasser - LRRPF52 - 03-02-2020 Northranch Wrote:I do have the full length dies. My lee press does not cam over. Is this something I need to take into consideration? Thanks How far are your dies turned-in on the press? If the dies are down too far, the handle will not cam over on many presses. I personally won't use the Lee presses for anything other than de-priming with a universal de-capper. Sizing for gasser - Northranch - 03-02-2020 They are turned in a quarter turn or a little less past the ram being bottomed out. My buddy has a Hornady and a rockchucker. My press doesnt cam over like those do. Maybe Ill buy a chucker and see if that helps. Thanks Sizing for gasser - Kswhitetails - 03-03-2020 I've loaded on two LEE presses. I'm convinced that the only folks who say they're really any good are those that have never loaded on anything else. I've seen LEE presses on display at gunshows, gunshops, and Cabelas, and man I've gotta wonder who thinks these things are worth a darn? Because I don't. But I'm pretty particular about things actually being made well, not just looking good for a catalogue pic... Sizing for gasser - Happy2Shoot - 03-03-2020 Honestly, you should be able to re-chamber your spent brass without resizing. Can you post a picture of new unfired brass, fired brass, and resized brass all laying next to each other? Sizing for gasser - Mesa1978 - 03-03-2020 This works for barrels from 4 different manufacturers. https://www.amazon.com/Lyman-Single-Caliber-Checker-Grendel/dp/B07MXZ8RGB Sizing for gasser - Kswhitetails - 03-03-2020 Happy2Shoot Wrote:Honestly, you should be able to re-chamber your spent brass without resizing. Have you successfully done this? In a gas gun? In a bolt? Can it be done, sure. Should we expect to? No friggin way. Maybe I'm missing your point? OP - if you're getting your brass into and out of your sizing die without hiccups, then it should chamber. Easily. If not, there's something else at play. LRRPF has already posted a bit about shoulder bump. If you're not able to plunk your brass into and out of your chamber after you re-size, then something's amiss. Either the press is not holding things correctly, pressing them together and pulling them apart correctly, or your rifle chamber is out of spec. A chamber check would perhaps be an assist in diagnosis, but isn't completely necessary. If your press won't cam over, then back out the die, run the ram all the way up, turn your die down to the shell plate. Take the ram down, run the die another 1/8-1/3 in, and tighten it down. Run your ram. It should cam over. If it doesn't, back the die out ever so slightly until it will. That will take the guess work out of ensuring you're getting the case as far into the die as it should go. Are you using the little 4 position LEE? You'll love that Ruck Chucker. ;D Sizing for gasser - Northranch - 03-03-2020 Its an old hand me down turret lee yes. After further investigation on it the cam part of the handle is all boogered up. Also watching the brass go into the sizing die it hits on one sid did the shoulder first and goes in crooked. Getting a chucker. Thanks for the replies Sizing for gasser - Happy2Shoot - 03-03-2020 Kswhitetails Wrote:Have you successfully done this? In a gas gun? In a bolt? Can it be done, sure. Should we expect to? No friggin way. Maybe I'm missing your point? Wow, take a breath. I didn't say no need to size your brass ever especially when shooting full auto belt fed garage built guns. Did I? All I said was you should be able to rechamber it. The fact that after "resizing" his brass will no longer fit means to me he goobers it up somehow. If he posted a picture maybe we could see what went wrong. And yes I can pick up brass that I just shoot and place it in the chamber a drop the bolt completely in an AR15. Sizing for gasser - Kswhitetails - 03-03-2020 Happy2Shoot Wrote:Wow, take a breath. Happy. Apparently, you failed to say a lot of things. We can't read your mind. Nor, can we get from the printed word the implied meaning behind a sentence without context. Neither of which were offered. Yes, I missed your point. Here was my thought: Why would someone make that statement to a new reloader? What is that guy going to think? What benefit would there be in chambering fired brass? Verificaction; of what? This poor dude could be getting off on the wrong tangent here, from information offered on this site. What kind of advice is this? Surely he doesn't mean to just skip sizing all together... no way. Sorry if I jumped a bit early, but some context or explanation - especially when answering reloading questions - is necessary. Folks don't ask questions about things they understand. Bits and pieces of information can be dangerous especially considering the explosive nature of manufacturing rifle cartridges. Your comment is valid, it can be done; Considering the fact that OP states his sized brass could not, it also has merit. However, there's a difference between explaining something and simply stating the obvious. Sizing for gasser - Mad Charlie - 03-04-2020 Northranch Wrote:Its an old hand me down turret lee yes. Sizing for gasser - LRRPF52 - 03-06-2020 Happy2Shoot Wrote:Honestly, you should be able to re-chamber your spent brass without resizing. Not in a gas gun. You can force a spent piece of brass into the chamber with a dowel, but you will need a cleaning rod to get it out. Even with my Howa Grendel, I could not turn the bolt closed on brass that had been full-length re-sized, until I moved the shoulder back enough. Thanks for the replies I dont know if youve already pulled the trigger on the Chucker or not but, I would seriously consider the MEC Marksman instead. I have both and the Marksman is far superior, IMO. Having said that, the Marksman does NOT have a priming system, which is fine with me, I prefer other methods of priming.
