So how far do you guys feel comfortable hunting whitetail with the Grendel?

Distance - Bigs28 - 02-12-2020

To many variables to your question. I use a 12" sbr shooting 110g maker trex and would have no hesitation shooting a deer out to 225 yards. People use longer barrels will shoot further. Mark larue took an elk at 400 yards with a 6.5 grendel.

If you're shooting hornady eld-m's/ Amax then I'd be comfortable shooting small deer at any distance as long as the impact speed is above 1800fps

In my rifle that's about 400m

See the link in my sig

Distance - kmon - 02-13-2020

I am comfortable to 400 yards but most of my shots will be inside 200 yards

Distance - A5BLASTER - 02-13-2020

For it goes like this.

12.5 inch deer/ hog= 200 yards no matter the bullet. Varmints= 500 yards

16 inch deer/hog= 400 yards. Varmints= 600

25.5 inch cz bolt deer/hog= 600 yards with my 129 ablr handload. Varmints with my 123eld-m handload= As far as I can pick them up in the scope and the bullet stay supersonic.

Now what is correct for you to do is what you and your rifle/load and skill is capable of doing.

Distance - SightedIn - 02-13-2020

Ballistically speaking you should shoot no farther than you know you're bullet will expand to.
Most hunting bullets expansion threshold are around 1800fps. So whatever distance you're bullet drops below 1800fps is your max range.
From an accuracy standpoint its completely up to your own skills. Only shoot to whatever distance you know %100 you will hit the vitals.
For me personally this all comes down to 400 yards on something like a whitetail.
Thats just me

I don?t like shots over 100 yards, fortunately in Georgia there isn?t a place in the whole state that you can see 100 yards.

Every Thursday I shoot steel out to 500 meters, conditions ideal nice bipod, nice rear bag, 4X14 FFP scope, wind flags every 100 meters.

Hunting warmbloods changes everything.

Thinking about it, I bet 98% of my shots have been between 40 and 75 yards.

Per Hornady, the 123gr SST expands down to 1600fps...

That puts my 16" gun and slow handloads out to 600 yards.

If you have first hand experience of reliable 123sst expansion at 1600fps that would be interesting. Hornady has never documented 1600fps. In fact the original Hornady reps were (verbally) stating 1800-2000fps.
As well, i know some forum members have struggled a tad with Ssts not expanding reliably.
In fact the only Vld type hunting bullet they have documented at 1600fps is the 143Eldx , that i know of
Regardless they've always work good for me. But i know my limits.

I have since modified my load since this post... I have a little more velocity to get a little further out... either way I have exhibited enough expansion for me to be comfortable putting one in the vitals...

Distance - 1Shot - 02-14-2020

Be advised that those quoted down to velocities for bullet expansion means to get ANY EXPANSION at all which is normally just the tip opening up a little. If you want real expansion you better add at least 200 more fps

Your tests are thorough and i?m glad to hear that it is definitely a possibility to get them to expand near 1600fps as its a bullet i hunt with often, but..and please dont take this the wrong way, i believe if Hornady doesn't document it buts keeps stating here and there it that it is suitable and effective to expand (to a reasonable amount) that it must be for a reason. If they can back it, why dont they document it? On the website, on a box , on an advertisement, anywhere?
Again, with all due respect fellow hordesman, i?m just annoyed with Hornady on this one as they should stand by there product if their confident in it
Especially when i could have dropping bucks at 600 yards all this time instead of 400!😆

Doug01 Wrote:So how far do you guys feel comfortable hunting whitetail with the Grendel?

Based on a survey of hunting distances on another forum, most people (95% or thereabouts) hunt primarily inside 100 yards and 98% primarily inside of 200 yards. The other 2% seemed to be those who liked prairie dog, antilope, elk, or other sorts of plains or mountain style hunting. A goodly number of folks will shoot farther, but only once in a while, but primarily where they are hunting most of the time is fairly short range. Some folks virtually never shoot beyond 100 yards when hunting.

There are numerous reasons for most people hunting inside 200 yards that include confidence in making proper shots (trying to be ethical), physical views (e.g., hard to shoot longer range in the woods), small hunting property size, chances of finding an animal you have to track (easier if they are hit closer to you), etc.

I have heard arguments on both sides that I found amusing, some very derisive. Shooting long range means you are a poor hunter because of your inability to be able to get closer to the animal before making the shot, poor field craft, and not really hunting, just shooting...vs...Shooting shorter distances are the mark of a poorer shooter/gun/ammo who has to get closer because of an inability to make the shot, blood lust of wanting to be close to the kill, poor field craft iin recovering game not shot at close range, etc.

So Doug01, what is the reason for your query?

Distance - tdbru - 02-15-2020

Doug01,
depends a lot. first of all, you need to be able to place your shot well. so that means trips to the range and practice to see what your limitations are, and/or to improve the distance at which you can place shots well, if that's what you intend to do. Second, you need to pay attention to what impact velocity the bullet you choose will reliably expand and penetrate. if you can shoot farther than this distance, then the bullet impact velocity will distance limit you. if what you think is your max range for adequate accuracy is less than what it takes for the bullet to expand and penetrate, then your skill/rifle/optics, etc. will limit your max shot distance, not bullet impact velocity. with many bigger longer ranged cartridges, it's operator skill that most always limits distance. but the Grendel gives up 300 to 500 fps over other "medium" calibers, yet can be a very accurate cartridge none the less, so might be bullet impact speed distance limited, i.e. you can hit a deer so far away that the bullet won't expand. then it is like shooting game animal with a FMJ, which most state game agency disallow due to wounding without recovery. i'd recommend pick a good bullet that groups well in your rifle, get out and practice a lot and become proficient, and then use your good judgement on game range shots.

I would like to know if anyone has experience with Noslers 129 and?or 142 grain ABLR, emphasis on the LR. They claim expansion down to 1300FPS on their website.

Distance - CJW - 02-19-2020

drykilned,

Hunting pigs just south of Macon next week with the 129ABLR’s. I will keep you posted.

Distance - grayfox - 02-19-2020

A5blaster uses the 129 Ablr a lot.

Distance - kmon - 02-19-2020

chuck, I like the LRAB in the Grendel, lets us know your experience with it after the hunt.
