I run a leupold vx-2 3-9x40 on my rifle and a 2-7x33 on my wife's. They discontinued the vx-2 line so the closest thing is the vx-freedom line. For a nice handy hunting rifle keep the weight of the scope down to around 12 oz. I use talley light weight scope mounts as well.

It all depends on how far you are going to shoot. I've run my Grendel out to 700 yds on targets so I have a SWFA 3-15x42mm mounted on it. I originally had an Illuminated 1-6x24mm on it as I envisioned only using it for hunting under 350 yds. Match your scope to it's intended uses. It all part of a system: rifle, cartridge, scope/mount, and intended targets at range. Choose wisely..

i'm running a Leupold 3-9x40 VX-R patrol. works fine. like others have suggested, though, match the scope to what you envision. if super light weight and moderate range, the Leupold FX-II 4X at 9 oz (if i recall) is hard to beat for light weight. if long range varmints, probably a scope going up to 12x or higher. if long range match shooting, use a MOA rail (20, 30, 40) and a good target scope (adjustable parallax, repeatable elevation and windage adjustments, etc.). another option is 2 scopes depending upon objectives if one scope won't match your needs. and check through used scopes too. Leupold has a forever warranty kind of thing. call them, they'll check it out and re-furbish it if needed. many many choices. have fun.

We just mounted this scope on my son's Grendel Saturday. It worked good on my 708AI to 800 so it should be good on his 65, waiting for ammo delivery and range time to ensure.

I have a VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm on my 6.5 Grendel semi-auto. For hunting deer in NW Georgia it's the perfect balance of weight and magnification. I'm in the process of replacing it with a Leupold Mark AR 3-9x40 (w/Firedot recticle) and ordering a CDS custom dial from Leupold. That said, it won't be long before that orphaned 2.5-8x36 scope will be adopted by a Howa 1500 mini-action. I just can't seem to let spare parts sit around! Big Grin

For hunting, I have mostly Weaver Grand Slam 2-8x36 scopes mounted on the mini’s. Picked up quite a few on sale at Natchez for $200 and under. Excellent Japan made optic and a great value IMO.

I really like the Burris Fullfield 3-9x40 #4 illuminated reticle I put on my Howa 6.5 G. 3/3 on pig, deer and coyote ranges from 30 to 200 yards last fall. Might not be the best range/target scope but for set and forget truck/carry gun it?s about perfect.

I have Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 currently on my Howa and a Burris 4.5-14x42 on my CZ. Either is a reasonable optic for the Howa.

I recently picked up the same rifle. I'm also trying to decide what glass it's going to wear. I've found a couple of local good deals on Leopold VX3 2.5-8x33, and a VX 3i 3.5-10x40 w/B&C reticle. Im trying to decide between one of these, or pulling the VX2 3-9x40 off of my ugly old Ruger All Weather .223

Option three is definitely the most cost effective, but I hate to pull a scope from a rifle that is sighted in and shooting tiny 100yd groups. Especially with springtime rock chuck shooting just around the corner.


What I would really like is a fixed 6x with a bdc reticle calibrated for the Grendel, but as far as I know, this doesn't exist.

I think Leupold can hook you up with the fixed 6x with custom BDC

SWFA 6x42mm in MOA or MIL versions, I linked below. You calibrate it yourself for the 6.5 Grendel using something like this: http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj_simp-5.1.cgi You make a drop chart and post it on the side of your rifle. Mine's done in 50 yd increments out to 700 yards. I use this 30 cal stock cuff from Hill People Gear to hold the Drop Chart: http://hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/8/ProductID/43

I've got a Leopold vx3 4.5-14x40 cds on mine... thinking of getting a swarovski z3 4-12×50 BT though - it's a hair lighter than the leupold, the 50mm objective will still fit easily with low mounts and I think that 1 inch tube is more in proportion with the rifle
