PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - A5BLASTER - 01-07-2020 Well went through 100 rounds of the 120 grain hpbt PPU ammo in my cz varmint. The gun just simply blows my mind how accurate it is overall but with this ammo it's in a whole diffrent zone of awesome. Now down too the Intel so far on the brass. Just finished cleaning and preping the 100 1x fired cases for loading. Case seems good and strong. I didn't see any out of place stretching of the brass to make me think it isn't on par with hornady brass. Cases resized easily as any other and the primer pockets felt the same as any grendel brass I have reloaded after being fired for the first time. More loads will determine if the brass is worth picking back up after the first firing. Thinking about running a ladder with the 123 eld-m,cci450 and either ar-comp are AA2520 and see how the PPU brass stands up. Will update this tonight after I load the ladder and see where it starts too compress the powder and compare that too data I have for hornady and Starline 1x fired cases with same powder PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - Kswhitetails - 01-07-2020 Very good news, thanks for the update. I'm curious, have you investigated weight or dimension differences with Hornady or Lapua? Neck thickness and web thickness especially. Wondering if there's any possible out of norm issues for someone thinking about ordering a case to test/collect brass. Also, keep track of things as you go through the firing series. I'm interested if it seems to show any signs of being soft like the Federal stuff does. No didn't think to weight them but I can do so later tonight and get some comparison weights for ppu, hornady and starline. Yea my rifles love the federal fusion loads but I don't even let it cross my mind to pick up the brass is junk. Tryed it once and the primer wouldn't stay in the case when I went to deprimer it. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - diddlyv - 01-07-2020 Think if you search some old threads the knock of PPU is that it can be rather soft and primer pockets grow. This is what I recall from the posts going on when I joined the forum and is not based on any experience nor does it take into consideration any changes PPU may have made over the past 2 to 3 years. Yea this is new lot brass from factory ammo bought last month. So be interesting to see if they improved their brass as they said they did. Either way it shoots amazing out my cz grendel and the price is right for stacking it deep for plinking ammo. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - grayfox - 01-07-2020 A5 what is/was the problem with the CZ mags? (saw your comment in another thread). PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - A5BLASTER - 01-07-2020 grayfox Wrote:A5 what is/was the problem with the CZ mags? (saw your comment in another thread). The rounds keep sliding forward in the mag and a bullet tip enters the lil cutout on the front and when it does that you can forget it, it will lock up the mag solid. At first I thought it was due to the lil slop in the mag fit up but now I am sure it's the mag spring/follower set up. Cz said it's because of the torque I used on the action bolts (35 inch pounds) tryed it at 50 inch pound like they said it's called for but it was way worse and the gun shot like crap. It only happens with eld/vld type bullets. I'm not going to sweat it to much right now because I'm still breaking in the action and the mags seem to be improving but if it doesn't work itself out are I can't fix it within the next 3 months the cz is going down the road. If I hunted with it tommorw and needed a quick follow up shot, there is no way I could make it happen. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - FRB6.5 - 01-08-2020 Anyone tried these new PPU 120's in a AR platform yet? Not trying to be a browneye but could you start your own post asking that. So my info thread on the PPU brass does turn into a mess. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - FRB6.5 - 01-08-2020 I suggest changing your thread title then. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - A5BLASTER - 01-08-2020 So here is the average weight of hornady, Starline and PPU once fired brass. Got the average by weighting 20 of each. Note. All cases had been cleaned sized, trim, chamfered and deburred and have a live cci 450 primer in them. PPU=124.8 Hornady=113.8 Starline=116.4 PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - FLshooter - 01-08-2020 I buy PPU brass cases for my 8 mm Mauser all the time. They go for around $.55 per case.durable brass.Gotten lots of reloads out of them. Wondering if anyone sells PPU 6.5 Grendel brass cases. I would definitely like to try them. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - hill37 - 01-08-2020 You will have to contact PPU and see.https://www.ppu-usa.com/contact/ PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - FLshooter - 01-08-2020 hill37 Wrote:You will have to contact PPU and see.https://www.ppu-usa.com/contact/Thanks.I emailed them and if they send me information on a distributor that carries PPU 6.5 Grendel brass cases, I will post it PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - kmon - 01-09-2020 A5BLASTER Wrote:So here is the average weight of hornady, Starline and PPU once fired brass. Looking at those I expect case volume to be less with the new PPU brass, might be interesting to check capacity of the cases with water. Do I remember correctly the old PPU brass used large rifle primers? Seeing you are using CCI 450s with this brass that tells me the new cases use Small Rifle Primers. The more brass between the primer and the edge of the case should help the primer pocket grow at a slower pace. Federal brass has been a soft formulation for years. I have loaded 7-39 waters for years and federal brass is good for about 3 loads with it while reformed Remington or Winchester brass is good for about 5 or six loadings after the initial fireforming shot. Even without loading them up yet. I'm positive they will have less case capacity then the hornady are starline. I have compared the hornady and Starline before on case capacity will running ladders. And the hornady can hold a bit more power then the Starline. So seeing the avreage weight of the ppu brass I'm guessing it's going to be close too 2 or 3 tenths less case capacity the the other 2 cases. Planning on useing them for the 85 grain makers in my cz. Since that lil bullet don't need much powder too be speedy. Will save the Starline for the big pills in the cz. I only use the hornady in the ar grendels. But might one day play with them in the cz. My Remington ammo shows up today. So planning on shooting it this weekend and starting a thread on it as well. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - garyrapp55 - 01-09-2020 So Far I'm hearing the capacity of PPU is less. Thicker brass should be stronger but limits charge. I call this a con. Small primer is a pro. Looking forward to more data, thanks, A5BLASTER. PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - Kswhitetails - 01-09-2020 Confirming my suspicions, they probably didn't change the metallurgy of their cases, they just thickened the head and web a bit. 2-3 tenths doesn't bother me as my loads don't eat all the case capacity regardless. I've found loads in the light spectrum with both BLC-2 and Benchmark that just shoot lights out from both of my current barrels. I'll grab a couple boxes of this stuff to see if they like the 120 PPU as much as the SMKs. Thanks A5 PPU in CZ Bolt Gun First Thoughts - A5BLASTER - 01-09-2020 Kswhitetails Wrote:Confirming my suspicions, they probably didn't change the metallurgy of their cases, they just thickened the head and web a bit. 2-3 tenths doesn't bother me as my loads don't eat all the case capacity regardless. Shot a meadow lark bird in the head at 200 yards Sunday at the range. I'm excited to try the new Remington loads Saturday are Sunday and see how they compare to the ppu and American gunner ammo. |
