Precision Firearms Grendel Upper Came In - closetohome - 01-20-2012
Finally got my hands on my new Grendel upper. Unboxed it yesterday and got it attached to my DPMS lower. Robbed the 3-12X56 Zeiss Conquest off of my 223 upper until I can decide on what scope to put on it. Stuck between a couple of different models right now.
The upper is a Precision Firearms upper receiver with the Les Baer 24" stainless bull barrel and a DPMS vented handguard. Chamber is 264LBC. Was shipped inside a 36" zippered upper case with the Precision Firearms logo on it which was pretty cool. Scope is mounted in a 30mm JP Rifles one piece mount.
The lower is a DPMS with Magpul PRS stock and a Jewell two stage trigger.

I have one box of AA 123gr Scenars and 3 boxes of Hornady AMAX's to start off with and 120gr Noslers, 120gr Barnes, and 130 Accubonds on order. Going to see how the rifle performs with each and accumulate brass before starting to handload.
Weather permitting going to try and get out to the range today to see how it does. My front rifle rest is buried somewhere in my storage unit so I will likely be shooting off basic sandbags but it should give me a reasonable idea of the rifles potential.

looks good, with that bull barrel I imagine its fairly heavy, but will keep down recoil and should drive tacks...report back after shooting

Made it to the range for a bit yesterday but the weather wasn't real condusive to shooting groups. We had 20-30mph gusts and shooting off sandbags wasnt real solid.

123gr. AMAX's seemed to want to group but I didnt do my part. First 4 shots went into just under a 1/2" but I pulled the last one opening the group up to just over 3/4".
Overall the rifle functioned flawlessly. Hoping to spend some solid range time with the gun when the other loads come in and the conditions are more favorable.
Taking it pig hunting tonight and tomorrow so I am anxious to see how it performs.

My 223 upper was the DPMS Panther Bull 24 with the same barrel contour so the weight is almost identical. I dont carry the gun much and do most of my shooting off a bench or hunting from a fixed location so the weight wasnt an issue but the gun is heavy. I have an 18" barrel AR10 in 338 Federal that I use for stalk hunting and it is much easier to carry.
