Sry. CBTO. Dyslexia kicking in. Thx for the correction. My bad.

Code4,

Unfortunately the level of precision that justifies measuring from the ogive instead of the tip will not be realised when we compare each others readings. We are not using the same comparator. For this to work the internal diameters of the comparators need to be exactly the same, and they are not.

When sharing load information we are better off using base to tip - COAL.

What are you trying to achieve here? Without knowing our barrel maker or powder loads, what use is this info to you?

Post your C.B.O.L. - Texkitch - 12-04-2019

I agree with Klem. COAL is best for comparison. I used the split neck method to determine COAL when contacting the lands. My chamber is a little short so I decrease these measurements for ~10 mils of jump.

16” Alexander Arms Barrel Purchased Jan 2017

Bullet COAL to lands
120 NBT 2.256”
123 ELD 2.245”
123 SMK 2.290”
123 SST 2.230”
100 TTSX 2.250”
120 TTSX 2.278”
129 ABLR 2.390”
123 Nosler CC 2.269”
110 Lehigh CC 2.236”

Texkitch,

I was using a similar technique in 6.5*47 until recently. Sizing and seating and progressively seating deeper until the bolt closed. I finally ponied-up for an exemplar case to screw onto the Hornady chamber gauge. I now notice the seating depths are different using the two techniques. Looks like the effort needed to push a bullet against the lands with the Hornady gauge is different to the compound leverage imparted by a closing bolt. My Hornady gauge shows less OAL to touch lands on average than the bolt closing method.

Of interest to some, there is an alternate site that will drill and thread cases for the Hornady gauge. It's a precision bench rest site so rather than give you an off-the-shelf exemplar they use your own spent cases which mimic the shape of your chamber.

While allowing for the difference between Hornady's exemplar and your own chamber is no big deal what it also means is you can get a modified case for a calibre that Hornady doesn't sell.

I purchased the tap to drill and tap my own cases for this exact reason, a ?modified case? over the counter is not precisely the same neck and shoulder that your loads are. I deprime and size a case drill and tap the primer pocket. I then split the neck and the first bend transition of the shoulder smooth the cut inside and out with a jewelers file and walla the hornady overall length gauge is ready. By buying the tap I can use this method on every rifle I load for.

Interesting. I have a tap and I’ve considered tapping a case to get more exact but just didn’t think it would be much different. I may give it a try.

The modified Hornady case is not likely to be the same as a case fired and sized for your chamber, but it is easy enough to measure the difference and do the math.

As far as drilling and tapping your own case, the big problem is holding the case without damaging and/or distorting it and keeping it centered. Easy to do if you have the tools.

I thought it would be interesting to see just what variations exist out there.

Post your C.B.O.L. - Klem - 12-04-2019

Code4,

Variations of ogive-to-touch (CBTO) across shooters come, not only from different chambers but all the different ID's of the tool we measure this with (Hornady or Redback). Hornady is not known for their quality control consistency of either headspace or ogive inserts. To be fair, consistency across inserts is non-issue if you use these things in the spirit of how they are intended to be used, by one person only. As soon as you want to compare across users that's when the differences in chambers and gauges render the data meaningless.

Klem, relax. Your overthinking it. Not everything has to be an exact science with square pegs in square holes or shooting would be an exact science and not fun.
Thx Texkitch for the data.

Post your C.B.O.L. - Klem - 12-04-2019

I was (respectfully) pointing out that your request is effortful, for no help to anyone including you. To be blunt, you are wasting our time.

As for your non-sequitur 'Not everything [shooting related] has to be an exact science"...I beg to differ Sir. Measuring base-to-ogive is an exact science. All shooting is an exacting science, but there's no reason it cannot be enjoyable, regardless.

If I am guilty of 'overthinking' it then someone might be guilty of underthinking it. Think about it, you are requesting a lot of very exact but useless information from us. I was just wondering why.

Mate,

For goodness sake I am trying to help you.

If you ask us for apples then we can compare apples with apples and it is a useful exercise. What you are asking for however is going to get apples, oranges, pear, cumquats, sasquatches...You can't compare them with yours or each other. The reason is that all our comparators are different dimensions.

If however you ask for base-to-tip (COAL) then the measurements don't include a comparator and can be compared; apples for apples and the effort justified and useful.

Wow dude Klem is one of the more knowledgeable loaders on here. He is just trying to help you.

And yea when your dealing with gunpowder it's best to over think it and try for exact science. Going at it with the redneck mid set of " good nough" will get you hurt at best and dead at worst.

Good luck on finding what you want. Think your going too have a hard time of it now.

If I have no OAL established by the data provider, I load about .010" under magazine length for my CZ. I don't measure 'off the lands' and when I set the die I don't measure it again. Shooters spend a good deal of time and money unnecessarily obsessing over the seating depth. JMHO~Riuma

Haven't had enough time with the new Grendel Predator to play with seating depth, but it made a huge difference in group sizes with the Creedmoor Predator.

Every Forum has its own culture, usually dominated by long time contributors who think they are special because they have few other avenues to express themselves. Klem was just having a free kick at a newbie and being generally non helpful. You've joined the feeding frenzy in support of your friend. Commendable but archaic. A good way to stagnate a forum.
PLaced on my ignore list too.
