16 " lightweight profile - welldone - 01-15-2012
I want to build a very lightweight hunting gun and I am looking for quality barrel that is going to weigh around 2 lbs. Wilson Combat makes a 6.8 SPC barrel that weighs 24 oz. I am looking at that barrel/caliber combo too but just wondered if anything close is out there in 6.5 Grendel.

AA Spartan barrel...the 16" is actually a 14-14.5 inch barrel with machined flash hider to make it 16+ inches. It weighs approx 1 lb. The 18" Spartan weighs approx 2lb (I have this barrel).

why the cost difference in the barrels. The Sparten is $520. Is it special ?

The Spartan barrels are cut rifled, hand lapped...some would say they are superior to button pulled barrels (not to say that button pulled aren't good or accurate).
Fluting in a machine shop will cost upwards of $150...AA's are good prices for these barrels. There aren't too many shops that do cut rifling...Krieger would be one, Satern Machining another.

Are they usually in stock ? Also, I saw that AA has "new" barrels for 2012. What's up with that ?

I could be way off here but I talked with Bill Alexander by phone a few weeks back about my ultralight m4 in 6.5 and he said that they have a new barrel supplier.

Regardless, they are still cut rifled and fluted (as far as the "Spartan" barrels)...they are gearing up for a change

Sabre Defence barrels are no longer in production, but Rainier Arms has some left at reduced prices.
16" is 28 oz and 18" is 33 oz:
