Bolt Won't Close on Go Gauge - petrel800 - 09-17-2019
Long time lurker, first time Grendel AR builder (built 2 other 5.56 AR rifles with little issue) . . .
Been gathering parts for a few months for this build and just got in the 6.5 Grendel Go/No Go rental gauges. Glad I didn't put anything together as the bolt will not close and rotate on the go gauge. Extractor and ejector have been removed from the bolt.

Obviously in the process of elimination at this point. Bolt face depth seems good on the bolt. Getting measurements .135-.137 with the calipers. That said, the length of the bolt lugs seems long. Based off what I can find online, the lugs are supposed to be .28 in length. A measurement of my other AR bolts is giving me lengths of .278-.28. The 6.5 toolcraft bolt I have for this build is giving me a length of .282-.283.
I'd appreciate opinions on the length of the lugs on this bolt possibly being the culprit. Probably a little bit of tolerance stacking, but all my other AR bolts are under the .28 length for the lugs.

Welcome to the horde, sorry it has to be under these circumstances.
I haven't heard or seen any issue reported with bolt lug dimensions, however toolcraft has had to tweak their design at times, for overall bolt length and firing pin length (several threads on here about all that). Is anyone close by with another bolt you could verify with?
Maybe others will chime in. Me personally, I'm not real fond of toolcraft grendel parts... their 556 stuff seems ok but I tend to get my grendel bolts elsewhere. Group buy bolts on here are the best deal going. PF, JP, maxim are others mentioned when it comes to bolts.
If it comes to this, get a second bolt from non-toolcraft and take this one down to be used as spare parts.
I have several BA barrels and they have all been gtg.

Thank you for the response. Good news is that I called Toolcraft and they are exchanging the bolt. They sent me a return label and I dropped it off at the UPS store. Hopefully I'll have the bolt back early next week and the issue will be resolved. To their credit, they were extremely helpful and I appreciate them trying to make this right with an exchange. If this doesn't work, I'll take a look at the group buy.

Headspace measures from the chamber's datum to the bolt face. So it is either the bolt or the chamber. Might be nothing wrong with the bolt, which means BA is responsible.

I ended up having to get my toolcraft bolt replaced. I did the same thing you did and rented gauges and didn't work with the no go. I contacted faxon as well and they were the one that told me the bolt was out of spec. So got it replaced and good to go. At least it was easy
