SWFA 10x42 on a pistol??? - RCSO11B - 09-12-2019

So I made a post on a different website, but I wanted to bring it here as well. I have a 12? barrel 6.5G on a pistol lower and I just recently moved to a place in VA that has access to ranges for long distance shooting. I don?t have a bolt gun nor the funds at the moment to swing one. However, with Black Friday around the corner, I may be able to swing one of these scopes. How ridiculous would it be to do? This combo would just be for the range. Ranges would be mostly the 600m range but I could go to 1,000 with a more appropriate upper/rifle.

Go for it, I use a 4.5-27x50 ares bye on a 12.5 and 14.5 Grendel for load work up and shooting steel out to 600

I also use a 4-14 primary arms scope on the 12.5, and 14.5 Grendel?s.

Just because it?s a pistol doesn?t mean you have to put a red dot or LPVO on it all the time. Or use irons. Use what you want.

That?s awesome to here. I was wondering just how silly it would look. Hopefully not too bad. It?s only 14? long I believe.

I would skip the 10x powered scope and try to get my hands on a vortex or Athlon scope with 4-16 are 4-20 power.

Still low enough on the bottom to be useful for close range hunting and plenty of power to reach out.

If you can find a old stock Athlon Argos 4-20 sfp with the ahmr1 reticle that is what I would go with. Athlon stoped making that model but a Google search might turn up one still in stock somewhere. I have one on my howa grendel and it is a good soild scope.

I have seriously considered something along the line of a variable. It seemed to be my understanding that, for the money, the SWFA would be tough to beat. It gave me reliable tracking with the turrets, some of the best glass for the money and it gave me MIL/MIL reticle to turrets. I also wouldn't have to sweat spending the extra money to for a FFP because a SFP could only be used at max zoom anyways. I swear, picking glass is way more difficult than buying and assembling the weapon!

Me personally I see zero advantage too ffp over sfp. Here is why.

If your hunting and the animal is far enough away you need to range it. A rangefinder is always in my pack.

While shooting targets I already know all the ranges so a ffp reticule for ranging is waisted money.

Now I'm not blind to the needs of others I will admit that there are rifle game players who need such a reticule but for general hunting and the average Joe going play on steel are paper at the range in my mind ffp has zero advantage over sfp.

Also don't forget ffp reticule get larger when you increase the power. In low light hunting situations they can be a very serious disadvantage over sfp. Sfp reticule stays the same size no matter the power setting. So it will cover less of your game animal in low light if you need to turn the power up some.

Anyways just my thoughts on it.

I find with FFP for hunting it allows you to use the hold overs of the reticle on any power without thought. Makes it quicker to get on target within normal hunting ranges without the need to think or dial.

I don't think that you would be disappointed in the SWFA. I have used several sfp variables for both hunting and target shooting and hated every one of them. Sold the last one for enough coin to buy the SWFA SS 10 x 42 MilQuad and have never looked back. The odd thing is that it always seemed like I ended up setting the variables to 10x without realizing that i was doing it? I find the fixed power and SWFA's patented mil hash marks to be very useful for snap shooting like RobUrban says. Bye the way, the upside down German style reticle nicely brackets most bullseye target centers, and with the heavy vertical reticle above the aiming point, you have clear view under it for hold overs, if needed.

Back in the day, 1x per 100 yards was the rule of the thumb. 10x gets you out to 1000 yards, that is at least 200 yards past the Grendel's practical range.

I couldn’t agree more with your opinion of FFP vs SFP. I feel a FFP just wouldn’t benefit me. I am also applying a similar idea to a fixed power vs a variable. Seeing as I wouldn’t be shooting under 100m and most likely spending most of my time at 300-600m, a fixed power with better glass would be more beneficial for me. Where having the higher top end of a variable may be nice, I don’t think I would consider necessary. I’m more interested in the tracking of the turrets because I want to begin to teach myself real long range basics. I was mostly concerned with it just looking stupid on top of a short barrel.

Who cares, my father spent his whole life worrying about what the neighbors would think. If it works for you go for it, let the other guy have the problem.
