What cleaning rod/bore guide etc. - Bigs28 - 09-02-2019
Ive always used random screw together cleaning rods and bore snakes. Doing some reading, I'm thinking i need a single piece rod and bore guide. Looking for any recommendations on what you guys use in the ar that is not what i already have.

You only got one more choice. One piece rod and wrap around jag. I use Parker Hale rods and jags but I doubt there is much of a difference in outcome if you use some other brand. Get one that is suitable for 6.5 mm. Avoid one size fits all as if you use a 5.56 rod in a 6.5 mm bore, you will eventually bend the rod.
Bore guides work but I doubt a guy will ruin a barrel by not using one. Does make things easier if the guide has a solvent cut out. One piece guide that fits snugly into the receiver is better than a skinny one that uses a rod to hold it in place.

All my google-fu can drum up are sized and marketed for a range such as .22 - .260.
I’ll grant you, I can break just about anything if I get western enough; but how will 36 or so thousandths of extra rod clearance lead to a bent rod?
I’m asking, because I am getting ready to do some JB bore paste lapping. This is about a 5 on the 1-10 western scale.

One FYI on bore guides. Dewey claims their 6.8 is usable on 6.5 Grendel, it is NOT, it will not even enter the chamber let alone seal it. The all white Delrin 6.5 Grendel one from Sinclair (and now Brownell's) works, I believe it is actually made by Possum Hollow.

If you use too tight a patch, it can get stuck just inside the barrel. You have one choice -- use enough force to push it completely through the barrel. So you have most of the rod totally unsupported and the thinner rods will probably bend. I have a couple of .22 cal rods that are bent from just that situation. Sure, you can bend thicker ones too but having one that is made for the caliber normally is stiff enough to take some abuse.

I prefer the Tipton 1 piece over Dewy’s.And I use a Tipton universal bore guide.
Only thing about a Tipton rod is they are carbon fiber.They will break if you apply gorilla force.If your patch gets stuck,try getting it back through from the other end.
Dewy rods are stainless steel/nylon coated.They can bend,but won’t break.Tipton is either straight or broken.
Both work great.Matter of preference.I own both.

Has anyone found a rod specifically for 6.5 mm? Just like Growler, I can only find .22-.26 rods. Some specifically list 6.5 in the description, but also list that they fit .22, so they are the thinner rod.
Has anyone tried a .270 rod in the 6.5? Midway's site lists the Tipton Deluxe 1-Piece Cleaning Rod Carbon Fiber 27-45 caliber rod diameter as .250". I'm not sure how far the lands of the rifling stick out into the barrel. I'm guessing it won't fit, or they would list it as fitting 6.5mm.

If I was going to lap a barrel, I'd opt for a different approach.

Slather the first 4-6 inches in lapping compound, and then 4-6 inches in CLP. Pull it through. No fears about any of the above issues, especially when paired with their cleaning cable to pull it through. You'll just want to make sure you have a good way to anchor your rifle. Park your truck on it. Good to go.

+1 on the Tipton. Amazon seems to carry all their products and you can have it tomorrow if you need it. Its good quality, I can break anything and I haven't broken any of my Tipton stuff.

Meh, I use a 22 Dewey cleaning rod in the Grendel. I can't imagine bending a cleaning rod, there's shouldn't be that much pressure. Wrap a 22 or 6mm patch around a bore brush instead of a jag with tight patches.

Tipton rod, Tipton jags, Tipton patches. Don’t use a .30 cal patch on a 6.5 jag and you won’t get it stuck or break a rod. Tipton patches are sized correctly for use in the caliber range on package as long as you’re using the proper size jag. Never really seen the need for a bore guide. I have them but don’t use them. A carbon fiber rod ain’t gonna wear out your throat
