Rate my first Grendel build list.. - alpha0815 - 08-23-2019
This will be my first Grendel AR. The barrel and bolt are already on order. To the folks with the experience, should I change anything? Think the 4.0oz buffer will be reliable to properly cycle and lock back on last round? I most likely will be shooting Hornady 123 ELD-M and FGMM 130 Berger Hybrid. I also will try out my AAC 762-SD suppressor on it to see how it runs.
Upper
- VLTOR MUR-1S receiver
- X-Caliber 18" SPR, Rifle-Length (RLGS), 1:8 twist, 5R
- JP Enhanced Bolt
- Young National Match AR-15 carrier (I believe the weight is somewhere between a standard AR15 carrier and mil-spec M16 BCG)
- Radian Raptor charging handle
- Noveske low-pro gas block (non adjustable)
- Melonite gas tube
- Larue 13.2" LAT handguard
- AAC 51t brake
*Upper will be Cerakoted, then Paladin Machine will true the face*
*Barrel will be bedded to receiver with Loctite 620*
Lower
- New Frontier C-4 receiver
- Forward Control Designs lower parts
- Larue MBT-2S
- Larue receiver extension, stock, grip
- Spikes T2 buffer
- Milspec carbine spring (because I think the Tubbs may be too strong ??)

Put a true lowmass bcg in it and an adjustable gas block.
Both will make the rifle work much better with and without the can.
Standard carbine buffer and buffer spring should work fine. It does in my rifle with adjustable gas and lowmass bcg.

I've definitely considered an adjustable gas block. But with all my AR's (5.56, 6.8 SPC, 300 BLK), I'm batting a 1000 with standard gas block. Plus I don't think the Larue rail will accommodate one.

I would love to see a side beside test of the upper against a standard ar upper like an aero, will it actually give you more accuracy and is the added weight worth it(I'm far from the oz=lbs lbs=pain club just curious)? It's your money and you can spend it how you want but I would go for aero upper and lowers and a regular gas tube. People generally use the adjustable gas blocks so the buffer doesn't slam back so hard, which is fine if you are shooting multiple different rounds in different environments, it can help with faster follow up shots though, but I wouldn’t worry about it. Those are great looking uppers and lowers though it's gonna look great.

I have a LAT on my 12? barrel Grendel and have a Superlative Arms agb installed. You will have to install it after you install the handguard, in my case it was easy because the m-lok slots lined up perfectly to allow me access to the set screws on the bottom. Plenty of clearance as you can see in the pics.

Well guys I?m a little disappointed in JP. I bought the JP enhanced bolt and sent it to X-Caliber to headspace as they are making my barrel. They called today to let me know not only did it fail the go / no-go gauge, that it was one of the worst off spec AR bolts they have seen. Yikes!
So I?m passing on the Enhanced bolt and going with a nitride RCA bolt instead. It?s extra regular but X-Caliber says they see the best headspacing results with Rubber City.

Yea they told me the same thing. Fact is they are full of BS.
When I got my barrel from them I check headspace with the jp bolt I had sent plus my group buy bolt I have and my AA bolt.
Everyone of them worked correctly on the no/go gauges.
They told you that so they could make extra money off you with the rca bolt.

Look around at higher quality barrel makers. There are several that specify the JP bolt as the reference standard for process control. Anyone can let an out of spec part slip through, but your tip off should be when they try to blame an out of tolerance check of a two part assembly on one of the parts - the one they don’t make.
Bolts don’t “headspace”. That dimension max/min is determined by the assembly tolerances of the chamber/barrel extension (one part) and the bolt (other part). If a combination of some bolt and some barrel fails one of the headspace checks, you don?t know which part is out of spec, only that the assembly failed. If you are building your own, the only way to know with certainty that you are within headspace tolerances is to use a set of go & no-go gauges on your barrel & bolt. For many MSR calibers, you can probably ignore this, but due to the non-SAAMI foolishness that happened previously with this round, you may wish to be certain. Borrow or buy, either works well.
In general, spend money on parts that help you meet your goals. Save money on the others.
I would attempt to persuade you away from bedding your barrel to your receiver with schmutz or whatever. That just makes removing the barrel harder when (not if) you decide to upgrade. If you are willing to spend time and money on accuracy, concern yourself with the barrel quality and who cut the chamber. The other stuff is probably noise.

It is likely these guys have chambered your barrel and then later, after receiving the JP bolt realised they have machined a chamber out of headspace spec for that bolt. What they should have done is waited until they had your bolt to measure the lug lengths and the recess depth and machined it until the gauges fit. Instead they have used their own bolt to headspace a chamber on their timetable.
We don't know if there was an evil agenda from the start to get you to buy their bolt but more likely they have simply realised your JP bolt has different measurements to their bolt and the path of least resistance is to claim the JP bolt is faulty and get you to buy theirs. Otherwise they have to chamber another barrel.
Have you paid in full for the barrel?
If you are using a suppressor I would also get an adjustable gas block. You'll be wanting to shoot it both suppressed and unsuppressed and one spring/buffer/gas port configuration will not be perfect for both. If you don't fire a lot of rounds it might appear reliable but if you do it will rattle itself to early parts failure (too much gas) or jam when it gets dirty (too little).
I don't glue my guns. Tried it once and it made no difference to group sizes. It's a contentious issue with other guys swearing by it. My thoughts, each to their own but if you buy decent parts with tight tolerances you don't need it.

Lots of assumptions here. They received the JP bolt the next day after I placed my barrel order. They checked headspace that very day and called me. I have pictures they sent me that I will upload. Maybe the experts here can make more sense of it than I can.
They didn't sell me on an RCA. They offered to send the JP bolt back to me and suggested I have them replace it with another one. X-Caliber only confirms headspace on RCA, JP, and Young bolts. I'm pretty sure they don't have a hard on for JP, they promote them.
I am the one that suggested they just use one of their in stock RCA bolts and bill me for it. Didn't want to delay my barrel build by another week. I'm already 8 weeks out on delivery!
Just got a bad bolt, plain and simple.

What are they measuring in your pic? That does not look like a normal GO NOGO headspace gauge...what do you think it is checking? Can't see it on PTG's website.
