Rebarrel howa grendel - A5BLASTER - 08-16-2019
Thinking bout having my howa 20 inch heavy barrel grendel rebarrled too a 24 inch 5r with a 7.5 twist. Still sammi grendel chambered but want a lil more barrel length and 5r rifling with a tighter twist of 7.5.
So gents who would be the barrel maker to bring my business too for this project?
Price isn't a concern. So who is the barrel guy for this kind of project?

I've used Bartlien Barrels many times over the years: https://bartleinbarrels.com/
I've also favored their Light Palma contour as a good balance between weight and stiffness for a rifle that will be carried in the field. For pure LR competition of course I've gone with heavier contours, usually a Medium Palma or Rem Varmint. Bartlien will finish it at any length you choose.
As to what length, here's an interesting story, "Secrets of the Houston Warehouse" that posits 21 3/4" barrel length exactly for optimum accuracy. Even if you don't believe it, it's a fascinating story nonetheless. http://www.angelfire.com/ma3/max357/houston.html

^But^ those fellas very rarely shot over 100yds. The 21 3/4" barrel is probably good out to 300yds. But you don't see any competitive 600/1,000yd shooters using barrels that short.

Bugholes is a good place to start looking for a barrel. Hard to go wrong with Bartlein, Brux, Krieger are some good ones for sure. https://www.bugholes.com/category-s/1818.htm
Gunsmith, I will keep using Scott Weichel at live Oak Accuracy. Scott knows what it takes to make a good setup and is reasonable in price and time to complete in addition to being a dang good guy. https://www.liveoakaccuracy.com
I might send one back to him for fitting one of his new breaks on it so I can continue to shoot one of my favorite rifles. Shot a rifle recently with one of his breaks and watched the trace through the scope, pretty cool

For belly benchrest F Class on square ranges, yes they use very long barrels. But for PRC/Tactical rifle matches, where actually carrying your weapon is required, shorter barrels do have their place, especially with a suppressor attached. I routinely used barrels that are short, but also rifles with longer barrels. I have used barrel as short as 20" out to 1K Yds and beyond.

As long as the barrel profile and muzzle area is as you want then all a Smith has too do is install and headspace.
I looked at those but my money is going either into a Krieger are bartlein barrel. Most likely a bartlein.
Just got to find one with a 7.5 twist with 5r rifleing and get it cut threaded and profiled to match up to my oem barrel profile.
Then I can install, headspace it myself.

From what I am seeing with this barrel, It must be "short chambered ", requiring the GS to finish the chambering, setting the head space ?

I believe the Criterion barrel uses a barrel nut like a Savage to set the headspace.

For small contours like the howa that need to match factory, I use Lilja. All their blanks I’ve chambered were very good shooters. I do like Bart’s and Kreigers tho

Reasoning for trying to match the factory barrels profile is to save some stock work on the back end of the change out.
I already have the stock free floated good for the oem barrel and if I can keep the same profile. It will safe me having to do more work to the Boyd's stock.
Haven't made up my mind fully yet but right now the Bart is in the leed.
The twist rate is more important to me then the profile. But barrels are like woman. They need to have it all or I won't love it lmao.

If chambered fitted/chambered correctly, none of those three will disappoint. I just trust lilja contouring that small, as I know from doing a couple myself that they get touchy in a lathe trying to contour that small

I haven't measured the diameter of howa , but generally breech diameter of the barrel needs to match howa diameter ?

You can use as small as 1.050 on the tenon of the barrel, maybe even 1?. The threads are 22mm, or .866? diameter. It?s the shoulder mating to the action face I?m more worried about and would want more than .050? so 1? is minimum for me on the mini.

OP : why did you decided to go with 7.5 ? Done some reading and talked to rep and they all recommend going with somewhere 8 or 9 twist . Are you planning to use heavier pills on your build ?

Nope plan on useing the same size pills I use now. 85 to 130 grain. But the 7.5 twist will increase the spin stability when reaching out.
After spending the last 2 years shooting my AA barrel that has a 7.5 twist and it just shoots everything. I'm no longer interested in 8 twist are less. For me from now on it will be 7.5 twist in all my 6.5mm barrels.
Edit to add.
Tighter the twist the better the bullet will stay stable when it drops below supersonic speed.
