Extra power Extractor Spring On Grendel - Londerko - 02-16-2019
Is anyone using extra power or enhanced extractor springs in there 6.5 grendel AR bolts?
Such as the BCM extractor upgrade kit or the Springco 4 or 5 coil (I think the 5 mite be to stiff) extractor springs?
Im not having extraction problems...but was considering upgrading for longevity and quality sake. There not much more expensive than mil spec springs and then Id have a spare one.
Would anyone advise for or against these upgraded springs?

I use the wolff extra power replacements. Bought a pack of three on an order from midway IIRC. They work well in my bolt guns that have M16 extractors as well

I personally remove extra power extractor springs or O rings when doing an AR15 build for several reasons:
1. The O rings, D rings, and extra power springs were band-aids trying to deal with cyclic rate issues on suppressed M4s and CQBRs because of early extraction.
2. Increased extractor spring tension causes increased resistance to going into battery and extractor snap-over.
3. In an unnecessarily-overgassed system, additional torsional forces are applied to the extractor that are made worse with additional extractor spring power.
Tame the system to increase the amount of time the bolt remains locked instead of using band-aids.
I am a fan of properly spec'd extractor springs, not imitation springs. There are differences in metallurgy, spring weight, consistency, and longevity between garbage springs and the real deal, despite what many amateurs just getting into the AR15 market will insist.

I actually just bought 3 standard springs with the intent of cutting a coil off and trying to reduce the dents in the casings from the shell deflector.

I got a tip on the forum and just trimmed my ejector spring to try to accomplish not denting the necks on the deflector.
I never thought of trimming the extractor spring?

What LRRPF52 said. When we build 5.56 guns, we do a lot with the extraction system (special extractor, special spring, special ring, special spring insert, select polishing). On 6.5 builds however, we only use a quality spring and insert (and, of course, the proper extractor). Then we’ll polish the extractor in select spots and call it good.

I did notice that my factory Toolcraft bolt has an Oring under the extractor.
Should I try taking it off? And see how it runs?
So if Im hearing you guys correctly, having the Oring could be making the extractor chew up the case rim when chambering a round do to the extra tension from the Oring? Is that right?

That’s correct. Take the O ring out. Some bolts you buy have the rubber insert as well. I don’t use those on a Grendel. With the better springs there’s no use.
ETA: as a disclaimer I’m not running rapid fire drills with my Grendel AR’s, or any full auto. If you do, you may want to keep the insert. I do run them in my 5.56 guns though.

Just to clarify,
By insert, you are referring to the buffer that goes inside the spring right?
You really dont use that on the Grendel?
Im assuming the spring sits in the indent in the extractor ok without it?

I do not. That insert was originally used to mitigate extractor bounce when firing full auto in 5.56. Not needed for semi auto fire. Some may argue but I’ve fired several thousand rounds of grendel in semi auto and can’t think of any malfs other than when I turned gas block all the way down to fine tune on my first build several years ago.

Is the Colt copper colored spring properly spec'd in your opinion?

To repeat the above, at one time I was having issues and it was suggested to remove the rubber insert for the extractor spring. At the time I had doubts, but did so anyway - and all my problems went away.

LRRPF52 is on target with timing and dwell of gas system/BCG/buffer. Extraction is not an issue with quality components. Set shit up right.
