AAC 762-SD Opinions Anyone? - texasgrunt - 12-28-2011

I set up my Grendel with an AAC Brakeout assuming I would eventually like to run a can. I probably should have done more research, but the AAC 762-SD seemed like a good option as it should work on not only my Grendel, but also on my future .308 and current 5.56's (after installing the QD flash hider). Before I actually drop the coin on the can, I would like to know if anyone has an opinion if (and why) there is a better option out there?

Variable, do you run your 762-SD on a 5.56 or did you get a dedicated 5.56 can? If so, do you find it to work well enough to remove the need for hearing protection on your 5.56?

I will chime in here (not to step on varibles toes Smile )
we run 308 cans on every CF gun down to 223 .. and hear no difference in a 223 dedicated can and a 308 can .. on a 223 .. No hearing protection at all not crack at the shooter.. all noise is downrange

Yes, I've used it on my 5.56 guns, but when I've got a mixed pile I usually have it on a grendel. I have an older M4-2000 can I use on my 5.56 cans normally. If I had bought the 762SD first, I wouldn't have needed the M4-2000 to begin with.

Yes-- they are both hearing safe on 5.56, and the 762SD is hearing safe on everything else to boot. The 762SD is bigger (obviously), but it has less back pressure, so you get less crap blown back at you. I use gasbuster charging handles, but you still end up burning your eyes with the gasses when you shoot them quickly. The 762SD just burns your eyes a lot less.LOLBig Grin

I originally bought the 762Sd after shooting my 10.5" grendel in my stand once while hunting without ear-pro. That was enough for me. Some people say they don't hear the shot when shooting at a deer.... I definitely heard that one. I dang near forgot I shot a deer.LOL

A good can is almost mandatory in my book. We use ARs at work, and when someone lights off next to your head and/or in a confined area it is somewhat disorienting even with ear-pro on. We use Peltor Comtacs, and the next guy's shorty going off 2-3 feet from my head tends to ring my bell a bit. With a can on that isn't as much of an issue. Outside of confined spaces and/or not stuck up against your head-- they are pussy cats. You still have the ballistic crack of course, but in the open that isn't bad at all. Even shooting out of a stand or window it isn't bothersome. It seems like it takes a distance for the sonic crack to develop.

I could wear ear-pro while hunting, but who wants to wear ears all day? I sure don't. Plus it's cool as heck to bust a buck and have all the other deer around him look around like "what the heck was that?", look at him, and go back to eating. That actually happened with the 10 point I shot. I was shooting down slope through the woods over the rest of the deer to the buck in the back. They all looked up and around like "huh???", back to eating.... It was hilarious. I don't know if they thought a branch snapped or what.

good info. I'm waiting on the paperwork for my 762sd, I ordered it for a 300ba but also have a 18" grendel barrel with the same threads for a build the winter. now I'm really looking forward to it.

I haven't found everyone in Texas to get pricing, but did find one dude with significantly better number on this can (normal price is about 15% less than anyone else I have found here in the state). I would post the contact, but I fear that might be in violation of the forum rules, so if interested shoot me a PM. You can find him on several of the AR-related sites so this may not be a huge revelation for the more seasoned folks.

I'm going to pick up a 762-SDN-6 instead since it adds 1.15" less to a rifle's length, has all iconel baffles, has an extra baffle (I think), and they claim it has better reduction for 7.62 than the SD. It was also designed specifically for 300 BLK which I'll be building an upper in soon. The only downside is the $200 more MSRP, but there's a place in Cedar Park, TX that sells it for a decent price and includes a mount. Price shopping them against a certain Major in Oklahoma and it's basically a wash, but I don't have to wait for a form 3 transfer doing it locally.

I grew up in Huffman, what part of town are you in/from?

The SDN-6 was made for the 300 blackout with a 8 to 10 inch barrel. I have read that it is not a good match for a full length barrel. I am in the same postion - I have a grendel in 18" and am building a 300 blk in 9".

Anyone know if the SDN-6 will have issues with the grendel 18" barrel?
