Forgotten Weapons’ Ian McCollum on 6.5 Grendel. Hmmm. - m796rider - 10-27-2018

From Ian’s latest FB Live video with Larry Vickers:

“6.5 Grendel is primarily a threat to the people who have invested a substantial amount of money in 6.5 Grendel.”

Admittedly, Ian was answering a question about whether 6.5 Grendel was the death of .308. I guess he approaches the question from a broad historical perspective that has seen dozens of calibers and cartridges disappear off the face of the earth. Still, given his interest in oddball guns and loadings, I was a bit surprised how dismissive he was.

Don't know who he is.

Could care less what others think of my caliber of choice and don't pay much mind to what others shot either.

I am also troubled by the internal contradiction in the quote.

We all misspeak on occasion, but the sentence doesn’t make sense unkess the one investing has been disillusioned about what the Grendel does.

That can indeed happen, but spending a lot of money on Grendel equipment usually leads to pleasant discoveries about the things the Grendel does well and how much fun it is to shoot.

For his individual situation I can see where he is coming from. As far as mine, I see a sweet lil cartridge that makes me smile. Its not my favorite, but it sure gets lots of use. My 5.56 rarely leaves the house anymore. My grendel ammo pile is considerably taller than the cans of 5.56. I'm not worried! Long live the grendel and those that enjoy it!!

The 6.5 Grendel is a threat to whatever animal is in its sights.

I guess that I would have to watch the video to know the context in which he was referring to. You could make the same statement about the 458 SOCOM and many others.

Generally speaking, I like to watch the guy. He features some cool old black powder weapons from time to time. He also has some pretty strong opinions on how an AR should be built, that I don't necessarily agree with.

Funny. Unlike every other cartridge or rifle design I've seen him do an in-depth review of, I've never seen a single video from him doing anything with 6.5 Grendel.

Would like to see the actual video where his statements were made.

Oh look, the one website that I will never go to on principle.

Can't understand why it would be on Forgotten Weapons. It took a while, but has really gained a huge amount of traction in the last 2 years given the number of rifle MFGs that have started putting it in their offerings.

The Grendel is here to stay for a couple simple reasons.

1. It fits into a small frame AR-15 receiver (and they are not going anywhere anytime soon).

2. The projectiles offered come in a variety of weights and configurations that allow for versatility. Much like the 5.56 has.

3. It has more a$$ than a 5.56 for sure. Most people want more a$$.

I don't think it will replace the .308 but, the 6.5 Creedmoor will.

I'd bet my wooden nickel that sentiment has been stated by everyone from the beginning of time, David and his stone comes to mind. Wink

1. Larry Vickers, for all his faults, is entitled to a living. He has riled up many people and, at the same time, created a following of his own. Can't fault him for that. I just think he doesn't have an effective verbal suppressor for some of the things he says. I personally quit watching any of his TV shows years ago, and never knew he had a FB page until this thread.
2. Never heard of Ian or "Forgotten Weapons". Ever.
3. What Ian said has no basis in anything I've ever seen or read. Can't imagine why it was said, unless he's in some other camp.
4. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Ian and another guy have an online show “In Range”. They run or participate in 2 and 3 gun matches in Arizona. Ian’s interest is in older weapons and different weapon designs. Ian tends to view weapons from a pratical side. Ian stated one of his favorire rifles is the FAMAS or Arasaka 6.5 Jap carbine.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. The question posed to Larry and Ian did the 6.5 Grendel make the 7.62/308 obsolete. Larry and Ian agreed the 6.5 CM was a better comparison neither thought the 6.5 CM would displace the 7.62/308.

Forgotten Weapons’ Ian McCollum on 6.5 Grendel. Hmmm. - Lastrites - 10-28-2018

Plenty of room for the 308 and CM, but the Grendel is in a class of it's own for the most part, what's not to like about low recoil and long distance with great ablity to drop moving targets.

Forgotten weapons is an excellent place for a brief but thorough history of many different types of historical and present day small arms. Ian has done an excellent job with this format. I really don't understand the anger since what he stated was true. The Grendel is not a threat to the 308 since it is an established cartridge that is going no where. Ian's love of, "all weapons French" has always made me scratch my head, but doesn't diminish his quality work on Forgotten weapons. His other channel with Karl has proven the Kalashnikov operating system is not as bullet proof as once believed and proved the Stoner system was superior in many ways especially during the mud and sand test.

Montana,

I don't sense anger, so much as confusion. My question is: What truth is the quote “6.5 Grendel is primarily a threat to the people who have invested a substantial amount of money in 6.5 Grendel.” based upon? Not that he can't have an opinion, but where does that come from? As far as .308 comparisons go, yeah, he's got that right.

I too, don't agree with his last statement, and it was a little snarky cut,"undeservedly" directed at Grendel owners. On the other side of the coin, "when people boycott a channel" it does come from anger, IMO. Ian is not the know all and be all of firearm knowledge, but he does have an excellent channel that I would highly recommend if firearm history is your thing. Ian and Karl have upset people in the past when they had a transgender gun owner friend on InRange TV, which caused a lot of lively discussion. My point was, people will be missing a lot of great information if they boycott his channel. There is some historical truth about the questionable future of the 6.8 spc and the Grendel when they were first being put on the market, as all new cartridges go through. Ian needs to up-date some of his Intel about the Grendel LOL, since he was obviously wrong and made a stupid remark based on old information. If I boycotted every source of information, "that I didn't agree with at some point", I would not have anything to read or watch.

Like I said, I have not seen a single example of Ian doing anything with 6.5 Grendel.

Since he has a lot of first-hand experience with a wide range of battle rifles on steel, when he shoots 6.5 Grendel in the same settings, the light will come on. What's interesting to me is how dismissive he was when he made the ill-informed and 100% incorrect comment. He's rarely wrong on technical matters, and has very keen insight into the firearms market, not just with AR15s, but with a wide range of designs that most people have never heard of. It really looked like a personal feeling that was condescending and filled with negative emotion, which is not what he's known for.

From a buddy of mine who is a high-end collector, USMC 0311 vet, big into long range top-tier guns, .338LM, Hk417s, LMTs, etc., he sent me this text recently:

Quote:Had my 12.5 Grendel out yesterday at (training facility) intro to LR class we did for some folks. Was about 60% at 1190yds, and 100% hits at 960yds on 24" gong.

With 20" Proof Research Grendel, same Hornady Black ammo was 20/20. Weirdest thing man, 4 different barrel makers now...Bartlein, Krieger, Faxon, and PF. All fully accurized and bedded rigs by me.

All different set ups on Seekins matched sets. 4 different manufacturers of optic. They all shoot bug holes with match ammo and hand loads, and I've shot virtually every type of match, defensive, and hunting ammo. Every bullet weight from 95-130. Bolts from 3 different manufacturers.

They just shoot. Never experienced anything like it with any other cartridge on similar builds. Most cartridges just have narrow bullet weight/velocity/accuracy spectrum. It's kind of the jack of all trades.

I watched that part about the Grendel and spent about 5 minutes watching that vid. 5 minutes of my life wasted.
