Any one here shoot a bolt action AR in 6.5 Grendel? Thinking of building one next project.

I have run my 20 inch as a straight pull before, I was having gas issues due to gas rings going bad, so I just closed the gas block down to the point it would barely move the bolt but moved it just enough to make it easier to run the sidecharging handle as a straight pull ar.

I kind of liked it that way and if I ever build me a 22 or 24 inch grendel i will set it up to be run that way.

Don't know how well it would work with a normal charging handle style upper but with a sidecharging upper it was nice.

Someone here was trying to accomplish that with their GB removed, and was having huge problems getting the bolt to unlock after firing. Suspected it was the case design, but not sure where that ended.

Troy makes a pump action AR upper.

Bolt style, I'd just buy a bolt action only, and a chassis if you want the features/options of the AR15.

That was me. The HUGE problem was easily solved with a foot long 2X4. Big Grin

This showed up with factory loads only.
Starting loads for the Grendel were ejected easily.
The problem is the AR platforms have no primary extraction when operated in a manual mode.

I am considering having a custom made Grendel barrel for a Savage receiver. That way I could go as heavy as I want.

I think I would lean towards the Howa action or CZ... one that is a shorter action than the Savage SA... or the RAP action.
The Savage one gave me problems -- mag feeding -- couldn't resolve and so I gave up on it, went howa instead, although stock HB barrel.

If you have a mess of parts laying around, this could be fun. Slick system. Probably not any more expensive than putting a Howa into a chassis system. Might need a higher end barrel to benefit.

Does any standard AR15 bolt work? Seems to say only for the 556...?
Lantac says..."Enhanced BCG Straight Pull (.223/5.56)"
$355 for this assembly alone...
then add in the $$$ special upper receiver.
I guess it's an option for the non-free states...
Could be cool.

I,ve built two. Actually three technically. they dont work well with a standard rear pull upper. Works well with a side pull upper as long as you dont run really hot loads. They still extract but it becomes a bit tougher.
If you have the parts laying around its worth it but otherwise i would buy a Howa bolt action

I ask myself the same question. 6.5 something in a bolt action could be 6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Rem, 6.5-284, etc.
Do I want to go Grendel and give up a lot of performance? Why? Accuracy maybe?

I could see the grendel in a little bolt action. But if you are gonna go bolt action,why a AR bolt action? Seems silly.

The LANTAC is interesting because of the small changes.
1. Spring assisted bolt unlocking
2. NO gas rings as in none
3. Coated cam pin (nickel boron?) to reduce friction

Edit: Can the LANTAC bolt be inserted into an upper with a gas block and tube and what happens if fired?
I'm guessing nothing except a lot of gas in the receiver.

BTW, I did try firing an AR without a gas block or tube AND also without a recoil spring. It fired fine and stayed locked.
Feeding had to be done with a hard forward push since there was no spring assist.

i like the AR Platform and have lots of custom uppers and lowers. Also when I go to California I won't have to deal with their BS gun laws that they have on ARs!

As a California resident, I can confirm that the laws are ridiculous for semiautomatic centerfire rifles. Manually operated centerfire rifles aren't subjected to the same regulations, so this would be a suitable workaround for legal use in CA.

I briefly considered getting a barrel without a gas block and creating a straight-pull side-charger, but eventually decided that featureless was the way to go. The Thorsden stock I use is actually pretty great, and keeps me in the clear with no serious drawbacks (other than using an odd looking stock).

I had a spare stripped bolt without gas rings and installed it in a carrier.
Without gas rings there is almost no friction.
I am looking at where I can buy a spring of the right size locally.
I will definitely try these small improvements.

Edit: I am about to head over to Lowes with my BCG to look at this.
Maybe stainless steel if used in a sink. Big Grin

Here is my new manual ejection Grendel bolt. I think I will paint the visible side of the bolt carrier FDE so I know which one it is without removing it from the receiver.

Painted it.
