Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 08-20-2018
More tested bullets in the Rem 700.
Now it is the Hornady 130gr ELD-Match
Gun: Rem 700 bolt gun, 20" Jury barrel 1:7,5 twist
Bullet, Hornady 130gr ELD-Match
Lapua brass
CCI400 primers
VV N140 powder
Magnetospeed Sporter
Have loaded up 11 loads of N140.
Started at 27,8gr and worked my up to 30,0gr in 0,2gr increments.
Each case inspected before and after each shot. Have waited ruffly 1,5 minute between each shot.
Cases looked good up to 29,8gr. No pressure signs until now.. There was now a big crater on the primer and from precious experience this is for me a indicator of high pressure.
I´ve got the 30,0gr load left, but did not shoot this one. 29,8gr is for me the MAX with this bullet and load.
This is the result from the first test:

There is a really nice node up in the 29,4gr. But this being very close to the MAX makes me look at the lower node.
Have selected the 28,3gr for the next test. I will wait and see what I can get from that and maybe look again at the 29,4gr. Not sure how the 29,4gr will react to warmer weather. At this day there was about +12 celcius. What will happens if the temperature gains to +20 celcius? I´ve now loaded this first ones at 0.63mm of jump (0.0248"). If i go closer to the lands, and make less compression of the powder, will this pressure get less, or more...?

I would think you could reduce the jump .010 and try the 29.4. How temp stable is the N140?

Yeah.
That is possible that I will test that.
Have unfortunately done to little test with this powder to know the stability.
Have read somewhere that the VV powders are quite stable. Some type of comparison with Hogdon powders that included some VV powders but can´t find that test.

I took "Sticks" advice and loaded 10 rounds with 29,4gr and 0,2mm (0,007") jump.
This is the result with 10 shots of each over the Magnetospeed.
28,3gr:
AVG: 732 mps
SD: 3
ES: 14
HI: 739 mps
LO: 725 mps
29,4gr:
AVG: 761 mps
SD: 3
ES: 9
I had better result on ES/SD with other bullets and loads.
But I shot all 10 rounds on both loads on a target and it ended up in two big holes with one flyer on each loads.
There was big craters on the primers for the 29,4gr load, and this beeing a indicator for high pressure in my gun, I think I will look at lower loads. (Needs to remind myself that this is not a high speed caliber...
)Will not go only on this speed data. I need to check how this bullet preforms on target and what groups I get.
Other Hornady bullets I´ve tested have looked good with 0,2mm (0,007") jump. Will test the jump next I think. I will go with the 28,3gr.

I keep forgetting your not imperial, so your SD of three is on the high side of optimal. Bummer on the pressure though. 732ms is not that bad for a 130gr I suppose. Glad someone else is getting good results with them. Now for accuracy at 600m+

Have checked the numbers again.
I will back one step and do another load development and see if I can find a better speed node.
I usually do two tests before I check a selected load for speeds and SD/ES. This time I skipped the second test and went straight for two loads to check for SD/ES.
But the second test will be done around the same loads 28,3gr and 29,4gr since it clearly is a node on those two loads.
Learning by doing.

Have continued the load developement over the Magnetospeed to find out if there is something I´ve missed by jumping over one step in my normal procedure.
Loaded two strings with the N140 with 0,1gr increments, focusing around the previous nodes of 28,3gr and 29,4gr.
The first went from 28,1gr and ended at 28,7gr.
The second went from 29,0gr and ended at 29,6gr. All cases checked before and after firing and ruffly 1,5 minutes between each shot.
Temperature around +16 celcius.

There is some nice nodes around the same ones as before, 28,3gr and the 29,4gr. Feels really good that this test confirmed that I was fairly right the first time
Little confused why there is 3 loads that spiked really hard and separated them from the others... But this might be the case the last time when I shot the 10 rounds with 28,3gr and 29,4gr and got the high SD/ES :confused:
The node from 28,2gr to 28,5gr will be the next ones to test.
This lower node shot also really, really nice on the target. Even if I didn´t really had focus on the shooting and small groups, the 7 diffrent loads ended up in one big hole on 100meters, so even if there might be a spread in SD/ES, the bullet looks like it can preform.

I came across my ELD test target yesterday and for the life of me I can not remember what range I shot it at. I'm thinking 100y. Labradar for chrono. Prone, 7moh wind and 80*F ambient. Ammo was still around 70*

Best 3 shout group is hard to call, most are two in one, and #3 is .5" or more away

Best group here is 30.8 at .7 MOA.
29.3 is 1.25 but with that SD, I am going to play with that COAL.
Pressure signs in the last two charges for both, and sticky bolt on the last. Still cycled easily by hand, just hard lift. Going to stay away from them just the same.
Spooky fast for a 130gr out of a 20" bolt gun, primers looked better than my AR fired loads, no cratering or ejector marking on the heads until the last two loads

Looks like you get really nice speeds!
I might need to look for another powder if I would look for higher speeds. There is NO WAY I can get that amount of powder in my cases with the N140.
But if we compare the loads 29,3gr. I get 2473fps loaded with VV N140
You get 2469fps with the same load with AA2520.
Don´t know the AA2520, bit is it a single- or double based powder?
Edit: AA 2520 is Double based after a quick google search.
The VV N140 is a single based powder.
The VV N540 is bouble based and might get me an extra kick in speed. (If needed....)

I have a can of the Norma 202 powder also at home.
It is a double-based powder so this might be a powder I can try. Looks that this is similar to the AA2520 when I looked at a burn rate chart.
Have heard that the double-based powders are burning har on the trout in the barrels, but this might not be the case.
That is why I´ve focused on the single-based powder. But have no personal experience with this my self so really do not know.
I got QL, bot not installed yet since my computer don´t like it.
Must get that sorted!

You are probably right Sticks.
The discussion came up when I was trying diffrent loads with the 6,5x55 and the double based VV powders came up on the discussion.
some said a BIG No-No to the double-based powders.
But that was in a diffrent speed as you said.

Finally got time to shoot some loads with the Grendel and the 130gr ELD-M from Hornady.
Loaded up 4 different loads with 5 shots each.
Powder is VV N140.
28,2gr
Avg: 729 mps
SD: 4
ES: 11
Hi: 735
Lo: 724
28,3gr
Avg: 731 mps
SD: 6
ES: 16
Hi: 739
Lo: 723
28,4gr
Avg: 734 mps
SD: 4
ES: 12

The average speed from this four loads feels that I have found a good node here.
The SD and ES is on the other hand quite high. Got this results on the first try also. Maybe it is the powder....?

I have once again settled for the 28,3gr of N140. If I check the previous data with this load i have got almost the same speed so it feels that this will be a stable node.
Its the SD and ES that are too high. But maybe it will preform on target good enough for my needs.
Will continue to test jump next.

Maybe not really gave that enough thoughts.
Just felt that I have got quite stable speeds before with 28,3gr during testing. And the SD/ES have been high on all of them. Or higher than I would like.
Could go with the 28,4gr also.
I have got some high spikes with 28,36gr so 28,5gr can be a little to close to that.
But 28,4gr will probably work.
Or maybe I to another test.
I can load up 10 rounds of 28,3gr and 28,4gr and see what result I get. This is a quick test and will give a final result witch one to use.

Just speed testing at this point.
The attachement of the Magnetospeed on the barrel changes the POI so even if the group is small with the krono attached. When I shoot without the krono, I´m not confident that the group will stay small.

Went to the range to test different jump with the Hornady 130gr ELD-M.
Powder VV N140 and load 28,4gr.
I shot the rounds in a "Round Robin"-style and went from shortest jump to highest, from highest to shortest and then back and forth until the bullets were all gone.
The distance is 100 meters, prone position, 5 shots.
I took quite big jumps (0,4mm/jump) to get a big spread and then try to narrow this down one more time. And here ar target results:
