Why so many ammo sticking problems with the Grendel? I have shot a pile of different calibers and different chambers in those calibers and never had any issues. Seems to be a big issue with this caliber. Will be putting my first one together this week so will be watching out for it. Have 500 wolf, 140 Black, 60 SST and 200 AG to start out with.

If the barrel is within SAAMI spec nothing from the factory will stick.

Just asking why so many problems. Hell just on the first page of new post I see lots of problems. Never seen that in any other caliber. Hell when I shot highpower I had 223 barrels in 4-5 different chambers and never a problem. Would not even know what SAAMI would be for it. Think I have 4 different 308 reamers and never a problem.

This will be my first Grendel. I like to play with all kinds of guns and calibers. For years I shot wildcats of all sorts but have got away from that. To hard to get rid of them when I get bored with them. Will be using my setup for hogs. Mainly use a 7.62x39 AR now but have use other calibers over time.

There are a lot of vendors trying to capitalize on the Grendel bandwagon. The problem is that folks get what they pay for. BCA and a few others have decided that the best business model for Grendel is to pump out as many quick selling cheap barrels (sometimes less than stellar barrels) to fill the demand, and deal with warranty return and refurbishment on the back end. Spend your dime on a good barrel and optic and your guaranteed to be impressed. Don’t, and - well you can guess the rest.

Unfortunately, the less than stellar products are few enough, and far enough between, that these guys can keep the pressure on, and hurt the platform more than their own reputation.

I also wonder a little how many folks join the board, only because they have a problem they wish to discuss, and fade away after the problem is dealt with. It’s common on message boards, and the offshoot is that it tends to taint front pages with temporary but permanently recorded problems. There is less motivation to report fixes when the shiny rifle they thought they were getting the first time is satisfactorily in hand.

Here, a grain of salt with my opinions.

It's because Grendel shooters don't know how to load ammo or put ARs together. Barrel makers other than Satern can do no wrong.

I had a 123 AG round stick in my group buy 18” Faxon barrel Saturday. I loaded a new ten round Elander and when I unlocked the bolt on it I noticed it sounded funny. I squeezed the trigger and it went click. I had to hold the charging handle and pound the stock against the bench to eject the round. No dent on primer so I guess it didn’t fully lock up. I’m thinking too much spring tension in new magazine. I ejected the rounds and reloaded them into an older mag and they ran flawlessly. Kinda took me by surprise.

If there is this much problems that is not just from one maker it has to be a chamber spec problem. Same makers are pumping out I bet ten times the 556 barrels but no problems to be seen.

Ammo sticking problems - Mesa1978 - 07-02-2018

My limited personal experience with ARs is this; out of 4 .223/5.56 barrels 3 had sticky chambers, out of 4 Grendel barrels 2 had sticky chambers. YMMV.

All I can say is buy a sammi chambered barrel that comes with a matched bolt that comes from suppliers that have been in this game for more then a few months to a year and you should be fine.

Got to jp barreled grendels, and each of my kids has a bolt grendel one cz and the rest or howa.

And we have it to have any ammo stick in the chamber and between us we have used every factory load from hornandy, federal and PF plus some from nightop's and AA.

No BCA barrels for me. After seeing the problems i did a net search. It seems that even AA has had some of the same problems over time. That tells me it’s a reamer spec problem. Why is the compound throat a necessity? Never seen one on any other caliber that I can think of. Built plenty of 260s, BRs, and 6.5/284s for our 1000 yard guns and never needed a compound throat. Things may have changed since 2006 when I got out of competition shooting.

You don’t have to have a compound throat. The advantage of the compound throat for me has been my 6.5 Grendels show good accuracy with bullets from 85 grains to 123 grains. The 264 LBC uses a strandard throat and lead which shoots some bullets accurately and was optimized for the 123 grain SMK. Bill Alexander testing showed the potential of the compound throat to produce good accuracy with a variety of bullet profiles. It is up to the consumer to decide if they believe the advertising.

I think the majority of the out of spec chambers is the lack of quality control whether it is the source of the reamer, using reamers that are worn or personel not excersizing enough QC inspections. The industry has been producing 5.56/223 barrels for 50 years whereas the 6.5 Grendel as only started to go main stream by numerous manufactures in the last two or three years. In years past there were only 4 or 5 sources for 6.5 Grendel barrels. Many of the 6.5 Grendel barrels were expensive and only a couple of manufacturers mass produced 6.5 Grendel barrels for the AR-15.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. All the smart fellas are over on the 6.8 and 300BO forums.

So whose Barrel did you buy that you are having problems with.

Ammo sticking problems - Melglass - 07-02-2018

Just look at the post on the AA Entry. You would think they would have it figured out. As far as shooting a variety of bullets accurately the 6BR lapua was set up for 108s if I remember correctly and would shoot just about any bullet from 58s to 115s if you had the twist. The chamber that I shot with 90gr VLDs in 223 touched at around 2.530 if I remember correctly and it would shoot 52s into little knots. The case designe of the Grendel is great so accuracy should not be a problem. I look a a caliber as a cartridge not throat. Have you ever shot a Factory Remington 308? I don’t think you could touch with many bullets the throat is so long but somehow they all shoot very good.

My barrel is not even on a receiver yet just got it in Friday. Reading up trying to learn all I can on the Grendel forum.

I know you are being sarcastic but I shoot 6.8 and 300BO along with 7.62x39. I’m not stuck on one caliber I shoot them all. The 300 is way overhyped but is fun to shoot suppressed with subs and works pretty good for the kids. Will probably get a Howa Grendel for the kids to replace the Blackout for hunting. The 6.8 is a good killer and so is the 7.62 in its range.

Ammo sticking problems - -Justin- - 07-02-2018

The only AR I've ran that stuck rounds had a FN barrel chambered in 5.56 NATO shooting milsurp M855 rounds, after a good cleaning it hasn't stuck a single round since. The Grendel hasn't given me any trouble.. maybe I'm just lucky, but I'm guessing people having issues are more likely to post on a forum than someone who isn't.

Mel you still haven't answered that most basic of questions... which barrel DID you buy?
Busting in out of nowhere, complaining, but not offering relevant info leads one to think maybe a troll has landed. Dispel that feeling with some info and then maybe someone can help.
As stated earlier there are lots of Grendel makers now and their QC is definitely suffering. That being said there are 1000 ways to feel a barrel is sticky... starting from the most basic of "did you clean the chamber and barrel from any packing grease?"
True, some barrels -- and other parts -- can and will show up defective but I can say the same thing about Chevy's, Ford's, Wrangler jeans etc etc...

Grayfox, This post does seem a more then a lil suspect doesn't it.
