I want a true sammi spec chambered grendel. What barrel makers should I be looking at to get just that. I know there has to be some good ones that are true grendel makers.

I think there is a list like this somewhere, but I don't have a link.

From memory:
Alexander Arms

Precision Firearms

Lilja

Shillen

Odin Works

T Box

BlackHole Weaponry (SAAMI chamber w/ .125" boltface depth)

I have to wonder what the cost is to be a SAMMI Grendel barrel maker? are the tools just more expensive? is there a fee to someone and whats the fee? is it per barrel, per tool? and who is to stop a tool maker to make a correct tool and just use it? who actually moniters this stuff?

There doesn't seem to be any cost associated, other than possibly an annual membership fee. I'm no authority on SAAMI, I just spent a few minutes on their website and found this in the FAQ section:

Q: How do I know if the ammunition I am purchasing is SAAMI “approved” or “certified”?

A: SAAMI does not “approve” or “certify” firearms or ammunition products. SAAMI creates the
voluntary standards for performance, dimensions, and other characteristics. In order to
determine if a particular product was made in accordance with those voluntary standards,
contact the manufacturer.

I would speculate that the compound throat of the 6.5 Grendel makes it somewhat harder for one to maintain their reamers to stay within the SAAMI specs than say the so-called Grendel II with the parallel throat. But then again, if one is cutting Grendel II chambers, there is no standard that has to be met. One could install a piece of bar stock into a barrel extension and call it a Grendel II.

Faxon is also SAAMI.

Some manufactures will use whatever chamber you choose. For example Satern/Liberty barrels use Grendel II but you can order a cut rifled barrel from Satern with SAAMI chamber. At one time Black Hole Weaponry offered to use either .125 bolt face depth or .136. BHW since changed to only offereing .125 for financial reasons. JSE Surplus was selling some SAAMI 6.5 Grendel barrels chambered to use .125 bolts which adds further confusion.

Here are a few SAAMI Manufactures that come to mind. Some vendors sell house brands like Midway who source barrels from other Manufacture like BCA or Satern/Liberty used by Brownell’s. Manufactures like Wilson Arms, Shaw, Green Mountain Ballistic Advantage, Odin Works and Faxon all sell barrels to vendors and the vendor might or might not disclose the source of barrel. Barrel manufacturer will produce barrels to vendors spec and many times have Non Disclosure Agreements.

I’m sure there might be others but this gives an idea of availability.

There are a few custom barrel makers who buy barrel blanks and finish the barrel to the Customers specification. Precision Firearms offers several different manufactures barrel blanks. It makes it difficult to list because some vendors offer so many options.

unreal, I cannot fathom being a manufacturer and not insist on genuine SAMMI spec reamers so I could promote my goods as such. stupid

I did a build with X-Caliber. Also SAAMI.

I believe you can add Proof Research and Sheepdog Gunworks to the list. Both also take the .136" bolt.

The Saami chambers are not all created equal, I've had numerous barrels that have had problems with Hornady ammo because of the ogive shape, not sure whose fault that is. If you hand load, no issues.

SAAMI Grendel Barrel Makers? - VASCAR2 - 12-27-2017

The X-Caliber is one company who offers both SAAMI 6.5 Grendel or 264 LBC with either .125 or .136 bolt. It’s kind of hard to make a blanket statement as to how an X-Caliber barrel will come configured.

Just speculation on my part, if a reamer is worn and out of spec may not cut as deep on CNC without adding depth to the cut (probably doesn’t happen in mass production). Attention to detail is critical on an accurate barrel. When you buy a custom barrel you expect attention to detail and tight tolerences. On mass produced rack grade barrels out of spec barrels can slip through. Some companies only inspect a percentage of a production run. Some companies do a better job of checking each step of production to ensure every barrel is in spec. How a manufacture can keep the lowest price point with high quality with tight tolerances is a challenge.

Satern claims the SAAMI spec 6.5 Grendel chamber is flawed and released their own chamber with no compound throat and a long free bore. They fail to mention their debacle with out of spec 6.5 Grendel barrels sold to Midway and Brownell’s. I think Les Baer chose to use his chamber to obtimize accuracy with 123 grain SMK. Some people want bragging rights and claim their product is the superior or best. Marketing and price point plays into product selection. I’m no machinist but I think it is cheaper to mass produce a traditional throat compared to a compound throat.

I have LBC barrel that I got from BHW and it shoots great. I have 0 problems with it. That being said I also wanted to build a true sammi grendel. I thought about faxon but by the time I buy a barrel for 300.00 and another 132.00 for a jp bolt. I would just be better off to go JP all the way. I wish they had a 20 in. barrel. I have faxon barrel and I like it a lot but I'm just thinking in terms of accuracy JP would definitely be a step up. I guess my next question to you guys is how much distance would I be lossing by going with am 18 in. Vrs the 22in. JP barrel?

SAAMI Grendel Barrel Makers? - Ward12473 - 12-27-2017

Oh and 1 other thing has anyone tried the bsf barrels. I think it looks like an interesting concept but I really haven't been able to find any real reviews on them.

Two inches isn't much of a difference. Some people report that their 16" barrels get more velocity than their 18" barrels. Other things play a factor such as rifling twist and type. If you are talking about a 4 inch difference, you could make a pretty good "rule of thumb" estimate. One average that I read from Klem was "It will be about 25fps for each inch of barrel."

LRRPF52 also said once that "There isn't a linear rule for muzzle velocity and barrel length, but rather a curved rule. As the barrel gets past 20", the increase per inch produces less speed, although each barrel has its own characteristics."

SAAMI Grendel Barrel Makers? - Slappy - 12-27-2017

I think someone on this site has made it to 1000 yards with a sixteen. BANG BANG!!

"question to you guys is how much distance would I be loosing by going with am 18 in. Vrs the 22in. JP barrel?" FROM THE OP!!

SEE ABOVE!!! that was mentioned by the OP. DB that is why I mentioned it. The original question has been answered you can not get anymore precise than that!! Let me explain in more detail just for you!! My post was meant that if a 16 can reach a grand then an 18 aint going to be missing much from a 22 for distance!! GEEZ! And yet another way to answer the question is In an everyday normal hunting situation you would never notice a difference between an 18 in Grendel and a 22 inch Grendel. Even at the range target practicing you would not notice a difference I do'nt believe. We only have ranges out to 3 to 500 yards and I have had my 18 inch Grendel to 700 down here along the coast with no problems!!Smile BANG BANG!!

I was really interested in this thread when it opened. I'm obviously not a moderator and there's some good stuff being discussed here, but could we keep the topic to who is offering SAAMI chambers?

Velocity is all about burning the powder. If the length of the barrel burns all the powder in the load and extra inch or 4 will not give you anything more. Now if you feel the longer barrel stabilizes the bullet better then accuracy "may" be improved. IMHO there are to many other variables that go into an accurate barrel to just think about length.

One thing that could be interesting is does a SAAMI barrel produce higher velocities vice other 65G spec ones.
