Factory Reloading Resources - Raider1v1 - 09-21-2011 The hornady loading data is for the WSR primers, how would you vary the load for the large rifle primers used in the wolf brass? or can you not? Factory Reloading Resources - bwaites - 09-21-2011 I would start 1 grain lower and work up. The load differences between small magnum primer Lapua/Hornady and large primer Wolf is minimal, with the caveat being that the Wolf brass will not hold up as well and the primer pockets will loosen within 5-6 rounds max, or even earlier, at least in my experience. I looked up the WSR primers just to double check and they arent magnums they are just normal small rifle. http://www.winchester.com/products/components/primers/winchester-primers/Pages/winchester-primers.aspx So what is the difference between a small rifle and a large rifle primer? Id really like to be able to use the 95gr vmax and the 120gr hornady amax. The problem is that in the hornady book for the grendel, its only published w/ the WSR primer data. Factory Reloading Resources - rasp65 - 09-21-2011 The outside diameter is different. Factory Reloading Resources - Raider1v1 - 09-21-2011 rasp65 Wrote:The outside diameter is different. Sorry, let me be clearer. I am looking for the amount you need to vary the load data to accommodate for the extra power of the large rifle primer vs the small rifle primer. LRP can't be used in SRP brass, and vice versa. It's just not possible due to the size difference of the primers. If you're asking about regular SRP versus magnum SRP, adjust load down by ~0.5gr for magnum primers to be used with data for regular primers. Magnum primers are hotter, and usually generate higher pressure and velocity. This is just my opinion based on experience with a different cartridge, so use at your own risk. And if I'm off base and LRP Grendel brass exists that I'm unaware of, I apologize. Factory Reloading Resources - bwaites - 09-21-2011 Raider1v1 Wrote:Sorry, let me be clearer. As a general rule, you don't have to worry to about it much, rifle primers are rifle primers, large = small except for size. Magnum = Magnum. Drop down a grain or two and work back up, I'm ultraconservative and world say drop down 10% and work up. Drifter, Wolf for some reason still uses LRP in their Grendel loads. There is very small, and they are considered to be interchangeable by some, but others warn to never do it... Here is the info that I have from another forum: NOTE: This data is reference only. This is on a DMS (don't mean squat) scale. It is relative to this set of tests and this tester. Take them with a grain of salt and as a guide only. Most of the tests were of 100 or more primers. A few were of 50 when limited amounts were available. Ranked in order of power Large Rifle = LR, Large Rifle Magnum = LRM, Large pistol =LP, Brand/type Power Average Range Std. My chamber has been throated long due to it being a single shot rifle. Can I pull the bullets and adjust the length for better accuracy? I use a Hornady collet puller. Thanks, Dinny Factory Reloading Resources - LRRPF52 - 02-15-2013 Here's some AA trajectory data for different barrel lengths, all zeroed at 600yds: http://www.alexanderarms.com/images/pdfs/grendel_ballistics.pdf Factory Reloading Resources - JoeSheepDog - 02-16-2013 While I've been reloading for a while, I'm still not sure about the performance differences between regular and magnum primers. For instance, many loading charts suggest using small rifle magnum primers for loading 6.5 ammo. But what are the performance consequences. Also, would this same difference (if any) apply to things like using regular small pistol primers for loading 357 magnum rounds? |
