Is this suppose to hang to the right? - Metzger - 05-02-2017 I got a new barrel and it seems to be off set to the right. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - Drillboss - 05-02-2017 Send it back and tell them you want the hole drilled in the center of the barrel. Seriously. That thing can't shoot straight with that much eccentricity. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - Bill257 - 05-02-2017 It appears the bore is off center. Did you contact the manufacturer? Is this suppose to hang to the right? - Metzger - 05-02-2017 Bill257 Wrote:It appears the bore is off center. Did you contact the manufacturer? yes, they are suppose to reach out to me tomorrow. we will see. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - Klem - 05-02-2017 I remember reading about this...If you push a drill too fast it drifts. Inconsistent quality metal has soft and hard spots that can 'guide' the drill off axis. It might still shoot straight if the bore angle is attached to the receiver to be perfectly vertical (so it cancels out any false windage). But this is unlikely, especially if the same people who drilled the barrel also chambered and fitted the extension. Bottom line, no sense in you putting up with someone else's mistake. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - bigdaddyflo - 05-02-2017 Get out your mic and measure it before sending it back. That should have never made it out the door! If the bore to the od was 0.010 off, that's not uncommon( I think I've seen up to 0.050), but the threads need to be closer to 0, especially with a suppressor. I believe the rule of thumb is 7 times the diameter is the maximum drill bit length to prevent walking of the bit.... Maybe a machinist by trade will chime in.... Maybe a machinist by trade will chime in.... maybe, but it whould have been centered when the barrel was profiled. most blanks are 1" or more in diameter when drilled then the barrel is machined to the final profile, the bore should be the center, not the center of the material Is this suppose to hang to the right? - ricsmall - 05-02-2017 Metzger Wrote:I got a new barrel and it seems to be off set to the right. Looks to me that the threads and crown were cut in a three jaw without being indicated to '0'. If original deep drilling walked, which even with the best barrels you still get some curve, that would disappear on the exterior if the bore were running true before cutting threads and crown. Depending on length of barrel now, you can have someone that's competent cut threads off and rethread/crown. Keep us posted on what u hear from mfr. Not sure on legalities of u sending to me or someone else on here with a lathe, as I don't have an ffl yet. But the mfr should make it right. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - jebs - 05-02-2017 I am not sure how many barrel manufacturers are putting the holes in their barrels these days. Perhaps the norm for many is to use some of the new exotic HSS or Carbide deep-hole drill bits or inserted drill blanks - But I seriously doubt that; Because where I work we are pushing the envelope at what can be done using both of the above to the maximum depth possible at the highest rate of feed achievable thru tool steels over 62 Rc. Having said that , I seriously doubt barrel manufacturers have invested the money required to keep up with what we can do. They almost have to be using gun drills, which are by far the best way available to put deep, straight, precise, & smooth holes thru long distances. Nothing else can come close to what a gun drill can do, especially on a cost scale. A gun drill is not really a "drill", as one would think of when they look at a common drill bit as seen on the shelf at Lowes or Homeless Depot. Yes, it is a "drill" in the sense of how it rotates & advances thru the material, removing it as it goes. But, they look nothing like a common drill bit. The secret of a gun drills performance is in the end geometry of the cutting portion of the bit. If this geometry is off in any way, or dull to a certain degree, all bets are off as to how good of a hole you will get. Back in the early '80s, we routinely gun drilled 0.5000" diameter holes 10 feet deep with less than 0.0007" circular runout & concentricity from end to end thru stainless steel in less than 20 minutes. Perhaps you just got a bad barrel, or when the barrel extension was put on it, someone forgot to indicate it concentric to the bore or vise-versa. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - explorecaves - 05-03-2017 Thank you for the lesson. I am only familiar with typical CNC operations, not the obviously specialized drilling needed for barrels. Is this suppose to hang to the right? - LRRPF52 - 05-03-2017 Are the threads off center from the bore and OD, or the OD and threads off center from the bore? Is this suppose to hang to the right? - ricsmall - 05-03-2017 LR52, Looks like the threads and crown are eccentric to the bore. Richard Is this suppose to hang to the right? - Chrazy-Chris - 05-05-2017 This is an example of barrel run-out, yes? When the bullet jumps into the rifling and then all of a sudden is diverted down this crooked hole - poor accuracy results. Trust me, I heard this in a podcast on the internet. PS the title of this thread is still cracking me up ... I was a little afraid to open it |
