I'm going to be switching an RRA Eichler Predator to 6.5 and wanna go barrel and bolt rather than full upper. I don't want to have to buy a new handguard, which means I'll be limited 18 in max length (mid length gas). I'll shoot anything cheap for practice/plinking, but I wanna use the 129 nosler ablr for hunting. It's the only one I've found that claims to expand at anything under 1800 fps (rated down to 1300), so it seems to be the only real option for hunting beyond 300 yards. At least initially, I'll probably be shooting the loads by Precision. I'm currently debating between the AA 18 inch lightweight, and the Shilen 18 match grade. I like that Shilen builds each barrel to a single bolt and headspaces, and just their stellar reputation. But the AA 7.5 twist is compelling, and going lightweight sure wouldn't hurt for hunting. Anybody experiment with the ablr and have any 18 in barrel recommendations, and reasons?

I have an 18" Lilja chambered by Precision Firearms that is a tack driver. I'd go 16" or 20" though, not much difference in velocity between 16" and 18", but 16" carry much better. If 18" mid is your max and you want a hunting rig, get the 16" AA!

I must be missing something, why are you limited to 18". As far as barrel recommendations go; have you looked at any of the OdinWorks offerings? Their barrel kits are quite nice! I built a rifle for a co-worker this weekend using an 18" Odin kit and overall very happy with the end results. The new Grendel owner is also very happy!

Even a 16" Grendel will keep a 123gr AMAX and SST expanding out to 375/400yds in many cases.
A 10.5" Grendel with the 129gr ABLR still provides expansion out past 650yds.
CFE223 under the 129gr ABLR at 50ksi produces 2410fps muzzle velocity, which gives expansion out to 850yds, 2-3x the distance you would ever shoot at. Still has 913 ft-lbs of energy, and those numbers are at sea level.
For me and the areas I hunt in up in the mountains, the numbers get even better.
